Atleti 0-1 Barcelona, Dani Alves. Brilliant goal. Messi draws men in, plays it out wide to Cesc, he drills it across goal and Dani Alves taps it in.

Great smothering save from Valdes to deny Falcao. Only six goals to go...

McNamara That Ghost...

How the hell did Messi get out of that? He was on his arse and still beat two players. :haha:

McNamara That Ghost...

An absolute shocker of a challenge from Cesc, only booked. Not quite as bad as the potential leg breaker against Sheffield United in 2005 though.

Messi is suspended for the next game, only Sporting Gijon at home though so they should be alright. It's the only way he'll be rested.

And GB, indeed. They're the kind of tackles FIFA supposedly cracked down on years ago.

Atletico Madrid 1-1 Barcelona, Falcao! Great finish.

Falcao wasn't offside, poor decision.

4-2 to Rayo now. They never should've lost at home to Real Madrid.

Malaga equalised, Eliseu. As have Real Mallorca.

Wow, that's incredible. I suppose there's a good chance of making the Spain squad for the Euros then. Which is a massive shame because Spain's options would've been sticking Torres up front or playing 4-6-0. Although, I guess, they sort of do that anyway.

FrankCesc

Was twittering about the Arsenal game earlier too. It must mean he still loves us. It must mean he's not a greasy little fuck at all. It must mean he's one of us.

McNamara That Ghost...
03-03-2012, 07:07 PM
Maybe he knows he is to blame for it (relatively) all going tits up for Barca this season.

And yeah, even if he doesn't feature much for Barca before the end of the season, it gives David Villa a lot of time to get ready for the Euros. Massive for them really. Soldado must be wondering what he has done wrong in this world though.

Disallowed goal for Pedro. Cesc disagrees with the offside decision, good thing he isn't a ref.

I'd be quite interesting to know what goes on in La Masia. They probably bully the kid who can't do 700 keepy-ups in a minute, with coaches threatening the 'weakest' of sending them on a loan move to England.

Christ. Our lads probably get a pat on the back for having a go. Not that I've played football to any decent level but I'm reliably informed by a few who have that the only phrases in the coaches' handbook are "line it!", "switch it" and "square it".

Not too kindly. But a bit of fudging with him being "moved upstairs", or even just moving aside - all part of the plan etc might help. I'm sure if we replaced him with a big name and Kenny didn't kick off then it would be relatively quiet. I'm sure there will be some who complain if Wenger left this summer.

I doubt they're that naive to just say "top 4" and expect it to happen in one season, especially as they're meant to be championing a long term plan. Whatever it is.

McNamara That Ghost...

I'd be surprised if he wasn't given another season personally but then to spend a lot of money and still be in the same position you were two seasons ago (worse than last season currently) isn't exactly the kind of progress you'd be hoping to see after so much investment. Winning the Carling Cup would have given his reign a lot more substance though, it's true.

Thing about Rafa's last season is that we still had the bulk of what was a very good side and imploded. This season we're not doing that bad on the pitch, it's not like we're getting regularly outplayed we're just pathetic in front of goal. Almost the exact opposite of United who play badly and win, we're playing well and not. Which is just as worrying as when under Woy. But not as bad. With Woy we were playing badly and not winning.

I want him to do well, I just don't necessarily think we will do well enough. I don't want him to ruin his image with the club either, (sentimental tosh I know) because whichever way you look at it he is a big part of the club. I'd rather it didn't all end sourly and that he can still leave with a high head. This summer he can do that, imo, whatever happens between now and then.

I know the table is the ultimate arbiter, but then it has been a very weird season.

It won't happen because he's in his little comfort zone but it'd be great to see him move to another club. Specifically, Arsenal. But even if it was somewhere else - Italy, Germany...just to mix it up a bit. In 10 years time, he'll be looking back on his career having set unsurpassable records at Barcelona. But in a similar way to you try to compare between different decades - Tendulkar in Bradman's era and vice-versa - it'd be very interesting to see Messi play a few years in a team that is not so uniquely Iniesta-Xavi Barcelona and just dropping him at Bayern Munich or Man Utd or Milan and just seeing him play under a different style and different conditions.

McNamara That Ghost...
20-03-2012, 10:50 PM
I'm not sure he needs to, given he shits on most teams in the Champions League. In any case, the wish of wanting him to play elsewhere is really only for our benefit, not his.

In a practical sense, he'd only ever leave on a free transfer and Barca would never let it come to that.

He still plays for Barca in the Champions League. And of course it would not be in his best interests to leave Barcelona. At the moment it looks about as likely as seeing Bradman play today. But from a neutral football fan's point of view, I think it would be very interesting to see him in a non-Barca system. I don't suggest that he can't perform incredibly well in another country for a team that doesn't play the Barca way - but he may have to adapt or get out of his comfort zone.

At this rate, the closest we'll see to a different Messi is, maybe, 8 years down the line when his pace/agility goes and he might change to a more playmaker type of role relying on his vision more than a burst of pace/trickery. At the moment, it genuinely seems too easy for him. I guess the closest we see him challenged is when he plays for Argentina.

Yes he plays for Barca but that's rather glossing over the individual performances, in the most quality filled tournament there is to play in. It's a silly situation if we've to come it where playing well is effectively held against him. Yes Xavi and Iniesta have and will be a big part of this side being so good but Messi is what makes them go stratospheric.

It wouldn't be hugely interesting to see him in a non-Barca system. I don't say that glibly because there would be more exposure of him over here of course but ultimately any manager who has him from now on is going to cater to the team towards him and of course with being able to buy players that is achieved more readily than internationally. However, my point is, his back-up would not be as good as what he has at Barcelona but any coach would do their damndest to get the very most out of him and so where does that leave the debate? Would he then end up being in a comfort zone elsewhere?

The signs are there that he is starting to perform more consistently for Argentina (winners against Brazil, Switzerland, hat-trick against Venzeuela). I would say though, for Argentina, in the past, he has had to be 'Xavi' whilst at the same time trying to play like he normally does. Argentina probably have the best strikeforce of any team, club level or internationally but they don't have a 'dictating' midfielder, unless Pastore can man up I guess.

I guess we're only asking these questions of him because he is obviously is so good but to me, it's rather taking out the enjoyment of watching him play. Wherever that is.

While the situation in the Middle East is clearly no laughing matter, Al Dunya TV have left internet users gobsmacked following an outrageous report that Barcelona helped anti-president Bashar Assad radicals plot arms smuggling routes through the country. Using an El Clasico clip from last December, a video report on Sunday claimed Barcelona’s formation plots specific locations on a map, with the players representing the smugglers and the ball’s position signifying the current location of weapons.
The report concludes Messi's final passes to set up Pedro’s goal against Real Madrid indicates the successful handover of the arsenal to the rebels in Dir al-Zur.
Hard to believe? Watch the 'evidence' for yourself and see what you think...
