Best team i picked was

Dixon Adams Campbell Winterburn

Ljungberg Petit Vieira Pires

Bergkamp Wright

Was tough choice between Overmars and Pires but Pires got it cos he didnt go to the ****s. Likewise Henry and Wright.

It's not really a tough choice. Pires was much better than Overmars. Pires was fucking glorious.

Then he did what he did and i hope he dies in a fire

**** knows how Cantona tops the list of nominations. Man Utd have such warped views of their players compared to football fans in general - that's positive and negative. He was terrific & a cult hero but no world beater. I know the votes are purely Premier League but as a general point, how many European games - away ones especially did he ever have a half decent match in?

Best striker is laughable - in what way is Cantona a better striker than Van Nistelrooy who probably trebled his goal ratio? I'd have said Andy Cole was a better PL striker for them too and Solksjaer and Rooney.

Good Player - Absolutely
Good Striker - Not particualrly
Top 10 PL players - I wouldn't have thought so.

and are defenders inelligble for any of these awards?

How the ****ing hell can Steve Stone & Ashley Young be on the list of wingers, but no Kinkladze? I know who I'd rather have parted with £20 to watch.

I loved Peacey & Barnes, pheonmenal players but can't even remember them playing in the P.L. I suppose Pearce was in Euro 96 so he must have done.

I can think of better suggestions for an award than 'celebration' -

Beckham's hit & hope lob sticks out a mile amongst the other 9 goals for shiteness. Le Tiss got 10 better PL goals than that on his own, so did Bergkamp & Henry. Limpar's lob (season before PL) was twice the goal of Beckham but no c**t ever shows that.

Put Irwin, Mc Grath & Le Tiss in my team, pity Zola had to miss out as I like all of them. The rest were Arsenal and deservedly so.

Alan Shearers best XI

Schmeichel

Neville, Vidic, Adams, Irwin

Ronaldo, Vieira, Scholes, Giggs

Cantona, Henry

He didnt pick himself on purpose although he'd be in most peoples team seeing as he was the best striker around

As ****ish as he may be, Neville was extremely consistent for United, consistency that spanned at least a decade and then some. Successful sides don't carry passengers for too long, he did very well to stand the test of time and deserves to be in an all time Prem 11 IMO.

Big Man though, yeah, fuck that shit.

Rooneys goal was brilliant. A proper overhead kick from a cross without controlling.

Can see why it won.

When are others announced?

Ernesto

Should've been Bergkamp's goal. Both Rooney's and Henry's goals had an element of "hit n hope" about them (reinforced by the fact that, as any Liverpool fan will tell you, Rooney's overhead kick effort came off his shin)

But, meh. An Englishman was always going to win it in a European championship year.

I know, heart over head with Zola. Thought he was great. Ahh, f*** it, we need a goalscorer, don't we? Put Henry in in place of Zola.

As for Terry, c*nt of an individual, but he had a couple of colossal seasons. As an individual, stand-alone defender, he's better than Ferdinand, Campbell, Pallister, Bruce, Bould and Stam, in my opinion.

Ha. Terry is insanely good whether you hate him or not. One of the best prem defenders, so utterly consistent. Same with Neville.

If I had to change it I'd put Scholes with Vieira as "footballistically" that would work better, but Vieira and Keane together would just be jokes

All bias aside (and, well, I don't even like him really) Sol was the very best in an era (this era) when protection that the back four was getting was weakening. Technically an outstanding defender - didn't have a weakness.

His only weakness was that he was gay.

Big Man is all about last ditch defending/throwing his body around (so to speak), I've always thought he was a weaker defender than Carvalho. And anyway, if he was in my team, I wouldn't be the one picking the best Prem team: it would quickl have Dids, Lampsy and Ash in.

So the competition was really about the most spectacular goal. The best goals are team goals. We scored a few in the last 20 years, goals that were so much more than hit and hope for the best. Surprised that Newcastle goal didn't win it. Memories are that short and so focused on the next dollar.

I think Cole's goal vs Villa in 04/05 is horribly underrated. Insanely good team work and the finish to match.

We scored some brilliant goals in the 7-0 win over Everton that season as well, Bergkamp was picking ridiculous passes out.

Ernesto
04-05-2012, 12:45 PM
Bloody 'ell, yeah, Cole v Villa was a good'un.

As was Vieira v Liverpool in the same season. Vieira to Henry, to Pires, back to Vieira, GOAL (in a game that is more often remembered for Xabi Alonso and Neil Mellor)

There was a game against Reading in 05/06, at the Madjeski, where I think we got through a ridiculous number of passes before RvP coollly scored the opening goal of the match. We went on to maul them 0-4.

McNamara That Ghost...
04-05-2012, 12:52 PM
RVP's goal made it 0-3, Henry scored the opener, cutback from Cesc barely a minute in to the game. :geek: And it was 06/07. :good:

Very good goal though, in spite of the pedantry.

Syn
04-05-2012, 01:29 PM
No hit-and-hope's deserve a place. Cisse's goal the other day was a pub effort. Rooney's overhead was pretty good - requires tekkers. I'm a fan of most volleys actually.

Piledrivers from 94 yards out, fuck off. You can catch them in the village leagues every week.

The best type of goals are indeed team efforts like clockwork. The ones that finish with a cutback are particularly good.

The prettiest football played in England recently was in the 04/05 season. The invincible season was too machine-like for my tastes. There was no human element to it.

Olivier's xmas twist
04-05-2012, 01:42 PM
Berkamps goal should have won that was class and easily the best. But i guess they will say he only done it against the barcodes where as Rooney done it against their biggest rivals etc.

The thing is though, Terry's just not that good. Footballistically as well as meriting a place on the Earth in general.
