Sepp Blatter wants penalty shoot-out alternative
Fifa president Sepp Blatter has asked Bayern Munich honorary president Franz Beckenbauer to come up with an alternative to the "tragedy" of penalty shoot-outs.
Beckenbauer is head of the Football Task Force 2014, a group designed to recommend rule changes. "Football can be a tragedy when you go to penalty kicks," Blatter said. "Football should not go to one to one. When it goes to penalty kicks football loses its essence." He added: "Perhaps Franz Beckenbauer with his football 2014 group can show us a solution, perhaps not today but in the future." The Champions League final was decided on penalties this season (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18044385) , with Chelsea winning after Bayern Munich dominated the game. It was the 10th time that the European Cup final has gone to a shoot-out. (Cont'd).

What was there before penalty shoot-outs?
Before shoot-outs were introduced in 1970, drawn games went to either a replay, lots were drawn or they were decided by a coin toss - in the 1968 European Championship semi-final, Italy beat Soviet Union on a coin toss. Zambia also won a major cup in a penalty shoot-out this season, beating Ivory Coast for the Africa Cup of Nations (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/16999874) . The World Cup final has twice been decided on penalties, with Brazil beating Italy in 1994 and Italy seeing off France in 2006. Blatter referred to the "tragedy" of shoot-outs (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/africa/5388458.stm) after Italy's win, although four years later he suggested having all draws in World Cup group games ending with penalties.

(http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/8914308.stm) The Swiss was speaking to delegates at the Fifa congress on Friday.
Fifa has revealed the decision on the introduction of goal-line technology will take place in Zurich on 5 July rather than in Kiev three days earlier, the day after the Euro 2012 final. Hawk-Eye, (http://www.hawkeyeinnovations.co.uk/) a camera-based system, will be used by independent testers during England's friendly against Belgium on 2 June, (http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18190250) although match officials will have no access to data and the trial will have no impact on any contentious goal-line decisions.

I think the team captains should have a game of FIFA, both teams set to ultra offensive, goalkeepers in the striking positions. First goal wins.

Both teams should take turns to slap Blatter. Not sure about deciding a winner. It'd be a larf though.

Hmm. Bayern lose a CL Final on pens and now Becker's is looking into changing things.

I'm sure they're not related at all.

You'd think Blatter would feel too ashamed and humiliated to appear in public, let alone speak! But no, here he is.

Not sure there is an alternative to penalties really.

Replays are a bit shit because it's better for the occasion to have a winner decided on the day and even that could still end in a draw and require penalties anyway.

The only thing that could happen really that is similar is to a one-on-one situation, like in Hockey but then if you do that you'd might aswell stick with pelanties.

It has been a part of football too long. And unlike the 'pass-back' rule it's too embedded in the game's traditions. Penalties are obviously not the best way to decide which team is better - I think that footballer at the highest level has the ability to lash it into the top corner, and it's only about guesswork and staying calm. But, ideally, the 120 mins before that should have decided which team is better and if the better team hasn't taken it then handing the win to the team with most testicles is fine by me.

Reduce it to 5 players each, sudden death. With that number of players, you should get a result in a reasonably short time.

I'm sure somebody can come up with a solution that involves Sepp Blatter and sudden death shoot outs.

How about torture? Both teams pick 5 players to torture Blatter in sequence. First one to get a straight answer wins. You telling me that wouldn't pack the crowds in?

I'm sick to the gills of pelanty competitions, but at the same time I can't see what other options are available if you don't bring back replays (which they only got rid of for International tournaments after Euro '68). There's 'Next Goal Wins' perhaps, but would the TV companies wear that?
Maybe removing a player every 2 minutes, with the possibility of it coming down to keeper v keeper? That might have some legs.

Or - as somebody on the Guardian blogs suggested - have both teams advance in the event of a draw, with a combination of players from said teams competing in the next round. France/Netherlands v Germany/Spain? Book it

Nothing wrong with penalty shoot outs at all

Unless they are of Ukraine v Swiss standards then they should fuck off tbh

One of the most enjoyable times ive had as a Gooner was our shootout win v Sampdoria in 1995 and of course 05 cup final

Trying to think of one we lost, only 2000 UEFA Cup final comes to mind

Gervinho would've faked an injury a long time before it got to that stage.

I guess the idea would be to keep the speedy/stamina players on. Lump it to Theo is the only option.

I think it if it got down to 3 or 3 and below, you'd be seeing 'keepers doing a lot of 'Stallone saves'. I.e Two footed

Why not have the penalties before the game? Or at least before extra time?

How about "dieing in good positions" ref pretends to shoot them, they fall over in a spectacular way into dead position, ref gives points...ah hold on Chavs would still win with Diveba <_<

seems the best option. if the game is a draw then penalty shootout is taken before extra time. it forces teams to be attacking during extra time knowing they must score to win, which makes the game more open. if after extra time the game is still a draw then the winner of the penalty shootout wins.

Just because FIFA want it changed, it doesn't make it right.

And even if it was, it doesn't mean there's a practical solution.

Leave it as it is.

And the debate about goalline technology was reopened after England had a goal chalked off. As much of a bunch of cretins FIFA are, let's not play the 'Ver Whole World 'Ates Us Adrian!!' card...

What really needs to happen is for the corrupt bastards at FIFA and UEFA to be thrown out. Nothing else should be changed in the game until they have gone because there's no guarantee (or even likelihood) anything they do is in the interests of the game.
