Arsenal (http://www.goal.com/en-gb/teams/england/94/arsenal) goalkeeper (http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2896/premier-league/2011/06/01/2513372/arsenals-damian-martinez-delighted-to-be-involved-with-argentina-#) Damian Martinez (http://www.goal.com/en-gb/people/argentina/30318/dami%C3%A1n-mart%C3%ADnez) declared himself over the moon to be involved with the Argentine national team after receiving a late call-up to join the Albiceleste for their friendly in Nigeria.

Martinez, just 18 years old and a product of the Independiente youth system before moving to England, received the call after Oscar Ustari suffered a knee injury in training and was ruled out of tonight's friendly. He will sit on the bench for the Seleccion, behind Rojo No.1 Adrian Gabbarini in a team formed from players under 25 years old based in Europe.

Speaking on Tuesday evening after a madcap dash to Abuja, the teenager admitted that he could not believe he was involved in the national team, and that it still felt unreal to him.

"My agent called me, he told me and I couldn't believe him, I thought that he was winding me up. It was an incredible bit of news," Martinez told Radio Belgrano.

"I threw my gloves and boots into a suitcase and I left. I didn't even bring a toothbrush! I am here to test myself and when you are given these chances, you cannot waste them."

The goalkeeper has been training with the senior Arsenal team for just over a month.

Henri Lansbury was a 57th-minute substitute as England Under-21s drew 0-0 with Ukraine in the European Championships on Wednesday.

The Arsenal midfielder replaced Scott Sinclair just before the hour-mark and England looked much more of a goal threat after his introduction.

The point leaves Stuart Pearce’s side third in Group B and needing to beat Czech Republic on Sunday to secure a place in the Semi Finals.

What about Henri Lansbury? If he is spending his final year of his contract at West Ham - what does that mean for us? Is it his final year or did he sign an extension? He's 20 but I rate him, always have rated him and watching him and Oxlade-chambermaid link up yesterday I reckon he does have a future with Arsenal - he reminds me of a Ljunberg-type player and I think another year on-loan will do him the world of good - but I'd hate to see us lose him if he is in his final year of a contract. Thoughts?

He'll be sold.

Id keep him but he needed to be loaned out to a premiership club and see how he does. We know how he does in the lower leagues as hes been there on loan plenty of times.

Hes as good as if not better than Cleverley but unfortunately Cleverley has Fergie as manager and Lansbury as Wenger

At the moment Cameroon are some way away from being one of the top two runners-up. Second to last in fact. They need to win and hope all the other teams either draw or lose.

Cameroon have Congo DR next, who are their closest challengers in their group. It'll take quite a lot of circumstances for Cameroon to make it, basically.

EMMANUEL FRIMPONG has turned his back on England in favour of representing Ghana.

The Arsenal midfielder met with the president of the Black Stars' football association, Kwesi Nyantakyi, after the team played Brazil in a friendly at Craven Cottage last night.

Nyantakyi said: "Yesterday we met him after the game at Fulham at a hotel.

"He wants to play for Ghana. We have to apply to FIFA now — send them the documentation and wait.

"It is out of my hands how long they will take but with my experience I expect no longer than three months and it will probably be shorter than that.

"I am very happy for this because he is a good player."

Frimpong was born in Ghana but moved to North London as a youngster and has represented England at youth level.

He was called up to the England Under-21 squad last month but was forced to withdraw with a foot injury.

But Frimpong seemed to confirm he will represent the country of his birth in a post on his Twitter account.

He said: "I have done my part for the love of the country. Now let's wait and see the outcome..."

Well you clearly dont understand football because you said Barry was better than him. Parker was the best player on the pitch last night. He was the best player on the pitch during Tottenham and Arsenal... he was the best player yesterday according to most people who reviewed the game. I am sorry for may be being dumb but when pretty much every tom dick and harry can see he was the best, I'd like to beg to differ and say you sir are terrible naive about the game of football and I suggest following something simple like kabbadi.

As for me being master of wrong.. I dont recall myself really being wrong about anything regarding football. So far I have said:

- AW needs to go.. check
- Hargreaves needed to be signed on a pay as you play deal.. jury is still out but on a pay as you play deal, he looks to be a good deal missed
- Parker was a steal at 6 million.. you can disagree with this all you like but pretty much anyone with the knowledge of the offside rule will say otherwise
- Rosicky is a piece of shit (been saying it since 2007).. check!
- We needed a mauling or major shock to change our transfer policy... step forward 8-2 defeat and we sign experienced players.. check
- You dont have a clue about football.. CHECK!

Yes there are better players around but none of those would come to us. We arent a top club anymore. We are a laughing stock and cant attract the top players any more. Parker and Jose Enrique whilst not being the best around were certainly the best we could have got. They are better than the shite we have in the team right now and both have PL experience and have had excellent starts woth their new clubs.

personally with the two games i have seen of coqulein, i would rather have him. talented and good. was our best player against scum and without him, we would have done worse at OT. it says a lot about parker when he went on deadline day i think or if not deadline day then only a day or two before it

judging by his two performances in the league so far, we dont need to bed him in. hes that good already. he reminds of gilberto, you just dont see him on the pitch yet the attacks break down and he has the ball. hes good enough to start right now, imo he will do a chesney. just throw him in and watch him make that spot his own

ARSENAL whizkid Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain could receive a late England call-up this week.

The midfielder, 18, was in Fabio Capello's provisional squad as well as the Under-21s.

Despite suffering back spasms over the weekend, he remains with Stuart Pearce's Young Lions for their Euro qualifier against Iceland at Colchester on Thursday.

And Oxlade-Chamberlain could still earn a promotion to the seniors if Capello is hit by injury withdrawals ahead of the senior friendlies with Spain and Sweden.

Three Lions boss Capello may give keepers David Stockdale and Scott Carson game time in the Wembley double-header.

Ipswich loanee Stockdale, 26, is uncapped while Bursa-spor stopper Carson has not played since a blunder against Germany three years ago.

Carl Jenkinson faces a tough decision on his international career but he insists it is not on the agenda right now.

The Arsenal defender has a British father and a Finnish mother and has represented both England and Finland at youth level. However he is still eligible for either country because he has yet to make a senior international appearance.

Jenkinson has settled in well at Emirates Stadium since his summer move from Charlton and looks a big prospect for the future. Whether that future lies with England or Finland remains to be seen.

"Everyone knows I've got a choice to make on that front," Jenkinson told Arsenal Player. "But at the moment I'm just concentrating on my club football, that's my main aim.

"I honestly could not tell you what my decision will be [between England and Finland] because it's something I'm going to have to think about in depth. But I'm not in that position yet so I'm just concentrating on Arsenal and doing the best I can here."

May be in 3-4 years. Right now, his only good attribute is his crossing. His defending is awful and I'd wait till he gets a few years in before playing for England.

His only good attribute is his crossing. Apart from his no-nonsense approach to the game, which we've been desperately lacking. And the fact he's 19 years old and improving in every game he plays. And he's smart, gets up and down the pitch well, is a reliable tackler, has deceptive pace, throws himself at the ball when he has to, knows how to keep it simple in tight spaces, is about 20 times better than Sagna when he crosses the halfway line, has been a trusty stand-in at the back in Sagna's absence, seems delighted to be at the club, doesn't shoot his mouth off in the newspapers, earns his money when he steps on the pitch. Yes apart from that, his only attribute is his crossing and if he continues to plug away for another 3-4 years he might just convince those doubters who refuse to judge him on his performances.

I cant believe I just read an entire advert from you!! You must be sponsored by CJ! And you are saying all of those attributes from 6 odd games? He has deceptive pace? He was caught out multiple times against Bale against Spurs because of his lack of pace. Throws himself at the ball.. which instance does this come from? I am sure he must have thrown himself at the ball but I am sure most players including Chamakh has thrown themselves at the ball!

He does seem better than Sagna offensively and that is because of his crossing. As for being delighted at the club, which 19 year old from League 1 wouldnt be? Shoot his mouth off in newspapers- well, he is not half as important for the papers to even talk to him about shooting his mouth! If he improves like he looks like he is, he will soon be shouting his mouth off, no worries about that!

I do think he will get better but no way should he be starting for a top 10 team right now. He is very promising and probably will become a great right back but he is nowhere near as good as you make him to be.

I knew you could take every point, turn it around and slaughter the kid if you put your mind to it. My advert, your hit piece, my summary - he adds a whole new dimension to the right, your summary, he can cross but let's not talk about how he ends up in the position to be able to cross. Probably luck, every time. In those desperate penalty box scrambles we often have we used to stand around helplessly watching events unfold. Now you'll see at least 1 of 3 guys fighting the limits of bone and muscle to get just one toe on the ball. TV, Kos and CJ. And I have a feeling Merts will get there too once he's a bit more settled. He's a well established German international btw, and we have a Brazilian international at left back. Neither has settled as quickly as Jenkinson. It's just a fact. I was wrong about Kos, I watched him, thought he was shite and a liability, I knew he had heart but I didn't think that was going to be enough. Turns out I was 100% wrong. Happens sometimes. I now have a choice to try to defend my error or to just come out and give the guy some encouragement (because all the lads come here regularly to see what I'm writing about them - fact). So I give Kos the credit he's earned, after all he was absolutely superb and almost single handedly got us that clean sheet against Marseilles. Now it's time for people to give Jenks the recognition for what he's achieved so far. Has he won the CL? No. Has he been flung into a team in crisis and helped steady a ship that was on the verge of capsizing? Yes. So do we keep saying he's shite and all he can do is cross a ball? Well we could I suppose.

Chamakh is reaching the end of his career, what you see right now is the pinnacle. That's scary bad.

1945: At long last, Gervinho scores his first goal of the finals. And he does it the hard way, running from inside his own half after beating Berthe on the halfway line. That said, there was no challenge on the Ivorian forward as he ran 55 yards or so before curling into the far corner from a tight angle. Great finish, great goal - but terrible defending.

ARSENE WENGER is convinced Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will make England's Euro 2012 squad.

The 18-year-old was tipped to be named in Stuart Pearce's squad for the friendly with Holland tonight.

But he missed out and was instead selected for the Under-21s, who face Belgian in Middlesbrough.

Wenger though has been amazed at the progress of Oxlade-Chamberlain and admits he has found it difficult leaving him out of the Arsenal team.

And while the Gunners boss has tried to be cautious about playing his winger too much, he thinks he will shine if taken to Poland and Ukraine.

Wenger said: "Physically we have to monitor him because after every game he can have a little problem.

"We know now that a large percentage of players who play a lot of games between the ages of 18 and 21 have bony stress responses. I never expected the number to be so high.

"It happens because your skeleton is not completely finished and the bones are not completely developed to absorb the kinds of shocks you get in the Premier League.

"We have to be cautious about that. But you are always in a trap when the player is as good as he is, like Jack Wilshere is too.

"You cannot take him out of the team, you have to keep him there. They can win you games.

"Until the end of the season there is no problem and if he continues to play like this I am convinced he will go to Euro 2012."

The former Southampton ace has featured in 16 games for Arsenal this season, scoring four goals.

And Wenger is especially pleased at how he has coped in the club's biggest games despite his tender age.

He added: "He is a little bit like a boxer in his upper body.

"He has not played too many games up until now because he was on a learning curve but he has a super quality and is not fazed by the biggest occasions.

"To put him in the team against any opposition, it is just natural for him to be there.

"For a young player, sometimes they waste a lot of time getting used to the pressure. He looks like he can take it.

"There are very few players like that, players who look like they have always played in the team."

A lot of the time at Arsenal our players do not get the credit that they deserve. If we lose one game or we are even doing as well as 15th place in the Premier League, always there is criticism, suddenly we are in crisis. There is no crisis.

Now again, everyone in the media will say that my players are in crisis at the Euros, that there is embarrassment for the club. I do not agree. I am very proud of the contributions that they are making.

POLAND 1-1 GREECE

I was very happy to see Wojciech Szczesny doing well in the first game. It is very easy to look at the goal for Greece but that is only one minute in a long match – and even so, the way that he came out for the ball continued the goalkeeper philosophy of Manuel Almunia, a fine Arsenal player of many years. People will say that he got sent off but I did not see the incident; I am happy with his performance. I would say that it was a five-star match for Szczesny.

It is also very pleasing to see that Lukasz Fabianski would have become the No.1 goalkeeper for Poland if he had not been injured. If Przemyslaw Tyton was substituted on to save the penalty, you can imagine that Fabianski would have saved it twice had he been fit. We can be very proud of his hypothetical achievements; I give him five stars.

Wenger Ratings: Szczesny & Fabianski

RUSSIA 4-1 CZECH REPUBLIC

You must look also at the Czech Republic game, where I thought that Tomas Rosicky was magnificent. At Arsenal we have our style of play, where for many seasons now our system is to have a defence that concedes goals and for Rosicky to be calm and do little in midfield. He did this very well on Friday; I would give him five stars.

During that match people say that Andrey Arshavin had a good game, and there is criticism of us for letting him leave on loan this season. I want to say that it is only my business who stays and who goes from the club and it is not for the media to question my decisions, but if you look at Russia, you see that Arshavin was out of position playing more centrally. He is a winger, that is where he has played for Arsenal. You would not blame a player for having a bad game out of position, so I will not praise him for doing better either.

I note also that Arshavin did not score but Alan Dzagoev, who is 21 years old, scored two goals. This is proof to me that the way forward is to put your trust in young players; we are ahead of our rivals in this way. My philosophy is vindicated.

Wenger Ratings: Rosicky & Arshavin

NETHERLANDS 0-1 DENMARK

I do not know why the media insist on talking all the time about Robin van Persie. He is the captain of our club but it is tiresome, all these questions. However, I am happy with his performance against Denmark. He did not score but this is to be expected; this season he has scored 37 goals when he is playing with Gervinho and Chu-Young Park, but only six goals when with Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben. You cannot expect Robin to score if he is in a team with inferior players and clearly he tried hard and did well despite the lesser service. I think it was a five-star performance from him.

In this game also there was Nicklas Bendtner, people tell me that he should not have left on loan. Maybe he did well against Netherlands but he did not score; if Denmark had selected Marouane Chamakh, you cannot say that he would not have done better. People try to make a crisis but I am comfortable with my decisions.

Wenger Ratings: Van Persie & Bendtner

GERMANY 1-0 PORTUGAL

Per Mertesacker did not play for Germany, I am not worried. Why play a defender if your opponent does not play a striker? If Helder Postiga has ever scored a goal, I did not see it. If he had played he would have been injured and again we would not have been compensated. For conserving his energy correctly I would give Mertesacker five stars.

Lukas Podolski was impressive also. You see that he has football intelligence and he is still young; he will learn from this. Already he is showing that he is on the level of Van Persie. His rating? Five stars.

Wenger Ratings: Mertesacker & Podolski

THE TOURNAMENT TO COME

I look forward tomorrow to France versus England. I am certain that Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain will be excellent as they have been all season, but they are Arsenal players, not England players. Roy Hodgson must ensure that they play only 20 minutes to avoid unnecessary injury.

Laurent Koscielny I am told will be on the bench for France. This is good; you want to see a fair match where both teams have a chance. Koscielny would put the game too far in the favour of France. He should rest before the new season.

Certainly I am happy with the start that our players have made and the fans should also be happy. I know best and I tell you that, with a promising start like this, in two or three years our young players are showing that they will be excellent players. I expect all of our players to win Euro 2012.

Per Mertesacker has revealed his delight at seeing Arsenal team-mates Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain shine for England at Euro 2012.

The Germany defender has been keeping a close eye on his fellow Gunners when the ‘Nationalmannschaft’ has not been in action - and had particular praise for Walcott’s stunning substitute appearance against Sweden.

“I’m very pleased for Theo and Alex,” Mertesacker told Arsenal.com. “They were both in and out of the team, but then Theo scored and it was a special moment - it always is when you have to wait for your chance and then play like that.

“He showed that he’s a great player, having had a great season for Arsenal. I think it’s a great thing when you are not in the starting line-up but are able to show your full strength and take your opportunity. He showed that he is very confident.”

Four days previously, Mertesacker had expressed certainty that Arsenal fans would soon see what a future Gunner, Lukas Podolski, could do. It took the forward just 19 minutes to do exactly that on Sunday, breaking the deadlock with a clinical finish in Germany's 2-1 win over Denmark.

“Sometimes I have a good feeling about players,” smiled Mertesacker. “Lukas showed that he can be a good defensive player but also a good goalscorer - and with his right foot too. It’s very good to have him in the squad because he’s a striker who is always dangerous in every position on the pitch."

He also had words for fellow Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny who, like him, is having to be patient as he bids for a starting position.

“I’m very happy to see a lot of the players doing well, but I would like to see Laurent play for France too,” he said. “I think we are in the same situation - not playing at the moment and having to be ready for our chance.”

Arsenal stars Aaron Ramsey and Kieran Gibbs are expected to be named in Great Britain’s Olympic football squad, Goal.com understands.

Club colleague Henri Lansbury is also a surprise contender to be one of the 15 players aged 23 or under selected by manager Stuart Pearce.

David Beckham revealed on Thursday morning that he will not be part of the summer event after being overlooked for the three over-age places in the 18-man squad.
Beckham out of Team GB squad

One of those places will go to Micah Richards, who withdrew from Euro 2012 contention after only making the stand-by list of Roy Hodgson's England squad travelling to Ukraine and Poland this summer.

The Manchester City defender, though, is desperate to prove himself at this summer's showpiece, with a source telling Goal.com: "Micah's delighted to be included.

"He was gutted not to be in the squad for the Euros, especially having been nominated as Manchester City's player of the season, and he can't wait to represent his country at the London Olympics.

"It's a unique opportunity for all of the players and Micah hopes to do Great Britain proud."

Pearce's final two over-age spots will go to Ryan Giggs and Craig Bellamy.

The full Team GB squad is set to be revealed by the Football Association early next week, with Monday provisionally earmarked for the announcement.

Although the FA did not reveal who was on Pearce’s 35-man shortlist that was submitted on June 9, the players and the clubs were informed so they could plan ahead for the new season.

The first tranche of Arsenal players, to include Thomas Vermaelen, Abou Diaby and Andre Santos, will report back for pre-season training on July 9.

However, the club’s London Colney training ground could be quite sparse, given the staggered arrivals of players who competed at Euro 2012 and those involved in the forthcoming Olympics.

It is understood that Ramsey, 21, and Gibbs, 22, are set to be named by Team GB, with Lansbury, 21, who spent the second half of last season on loan at West Ham, also a possibility for a team that faces group games against Senegal on 26 July, United Arab Emirates on 29 July and Uruguay on 1 August.

Meanwhile, Goal.com has learned that Ryo Miyaichi will be named in the Japan Olympic squad, Chu-Young Park, 26, has been included as an over-age player for South Korea and Johan Djourou, 25, is in line for a Switzerland call-up.

Sixteen nations will feature in the men’s football event, including Brazil, Mexico and Spain.

Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey has expressed his delight at being called up by coach Stuart Pearce to represent Team GB at this summer's Olympic Games.

Ramsey was one of five Welsh players to make the squad and will now join up with his team-mates to prepare for group games against Senegal, Uruguay and the United Arab Emirates.

And the 21-year-old says he is looking forward to taking part in the Olympics and gaining the support of a partisan home crowd.

"I'm delighted to be a part of it," he told Arsenal's official website.

"Playing in the Olympics will be a great experience and I am looking forward to it so much. It's fair to say that this could be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

"I haven't played under Stuart Pearce before so that is something to look forward to as well. And looking at the squad of players we have I think we have a lot of quality in there.

"Now we need to work together over the next few weeks and get an understanding of each other. If we do that then I'm sure we can do well, especially with home advantage.

"It will be a good experience and a different experience to play in the Olympics, being part of a British team and playing alongside some of the English players too.

Ramsey made his debut for the Welsh national team back in 2008, a year after Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs retired from international football.

And the Arsenal starlet is relishing the chance to play alongside such a prestigious icon of the Welsh game.

"And of course Ryan Giggs will be there too. He retired from international football before I got into the Wales team and he's an absolute icon in Welsh football.

"He's done it all and most players would like to play alongside him so hopefully I'll get my chance.

"I can certainly learn from him while I'm with the Great Britain squad."

Arnie Podolski doesn't get injured, and should chuck him up front. Failing that, Walcott-up-front. It's now or never. (never)

Alex was very good in the first half but we made it clear we were going to take him off after 60 minutes, so I think he forgot to play in the second," said Hodgson.

"That will be an interesting lesson for him as well. Especially when I tell him."

It should be said Hodgson had the hint of a smile as he delivered his admonishment. And he added: ‘We’re very pleased with him anyway. He did what we wanted and I selected him to do what he actually did in the first half extremely well.’

Not quite sure it was a massive deal but Ox did seem to be showboating a bit more in his sport second half spell. He should take note of Scott Parker's performances last year and not do anything with the ball ever. Fuck off Hodgson.

edit: Actually that's a bit harsh. Fair comments by Hodgson. Ox handled the might of Moldova and Ambrossini and Pirlo very well.

Don't dare try to influence things around the pitch, Ox. Does he really expect a 19 year old GHEL to be positionally disciplined when the match effectively is won?

Sick of people coaching talent out of players tbf.

OLIVIER GIROUD says he is feeling pressure at Arsenal — as he expected to start life in England as a sub.
But the departure of Robin van Persie has changed all that.
The £12.8million man from Montpellier was the top scorer in French football last season but has yet to score in three games for Arsene Wenger’s side.
Giroud, 25, set to face Southampton today, was also jeered by French fans when he was subbed in the 2-0 win over Belarus on Tuesday.
While Lukas Podolski opened his account for Arsenal in the 2-0 win at Liverpool two weeks ago, striker Giroud has been unconvincing.
The 6ft 4in ace is the latest in a long line of French stars to play for Arsenal and believes he is learning under Wenger.
He said: “In reality, the pressure doesn’t come from following in the footsteps of Henry, Pires, Petit or Vieira but Robin van Persie’s departure.
“I was expecting to be his substitute but now I’m his natural successor. If I do have pressure, it’s on that level.
“Yet I’m not the type to panic. But it’s true you must realise what French players represent at this club, it’s down to me to keep that tradition going.
“The coach has faith in French players and signs a lot of them. The coach’s French touch is what gives the club its charm.
“Wenger’s the person I will learn a lot from, because I still need to improve. I know it and he knows it.
“He told me I’d made the right choice coming here, to improve.
“He welcomed me by explaining the intricacies of being a Premier League forward. How to position yourself, react when you get the ball.
“He’s always there to give advice. It’s better than someone who says nothing. Arsene is a teacher, excellent speaker and everyone knows it.
“There are a lot of French players in the squad. It helps you settle.
“It’s a bonus to hear your language spoken.
“But I don’t want to live apart, so I’ll immerse myself in English culture and its traditions. I regularly eat with the Francophone players but we’re not forming a clique. It’s good to mingle with everyone and I want to master the language.”
Giroud’s first game for Arsenal in the Champions League on Tuesday will mean a return to former club Montpellier.
He said: “I’m curious to know what reception I’ll get there. The memory I have of winning the title is of a bunch of carefree kids who managed to do something incredible without realising just what they’d achieved.”
