Udinese have confirmed they have reached an agreement with Inter Milan over the transfer of goalkeeper Samir Handanovic.
The highly-rated Slovenia international enjoyed a fine season for the Bianconeri last season, establishing himself as one of the division's most consistent 'keepers.
His performances helped Udinese to third place in Serie A and a spot in next season's Champions League qualifiers.
Italian giants Inter have been consistently linked with a summer swoop for the 27-year-old, though Udinese have previously publicly declared their determination to keep the player.
However, it has now emerged that the two clubs have come an agreement on a deal to take the former NK Domzale youngster to Giuseppe Meazza.
The deal will also see Inter full-back Davide Faraoni move in the other direction.
"There is a general agreement with Inter. Only the signing and the official news is missing," Udinese director Gino Pozzo told reporters.
A move for Handanovic would immediately bring into question the future of current Inter No.1 Julio Cesar.
When quizzed on the future of the Brazilian shot-stopper, Inter president Massimo Moratti remained coy, simply replying: "Let's see."

ANTONIO CASSANO has been fined £11,700 for his comments about gay players.

The Italy striker stunned reporters during a press conference at the European Championship when he said he hoped there were no homosexual players in the squad.

Cassano quickly apologised for his comments the following day.

He said: “"I sincerely regret that my statements have sparked controversy.

“Homophobia is a sentiment that is not mine. I did not want to offend anyone and I can not question the sexual freedom of other people.

“I only said that it is a problem that does not concern me and it is not for me to pass judgment on the choices of others.”

But UEFA fined the AC Milan player for “a discriminatory press statement”. Cassano can appeal the decision.

Serie A will become the first domestic league to introduce referee's solely officiating the penalty area, with Marcello Nicchi left praising the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) for being at the forefront of the game.

The president of the Italian Football Referee's Association (AIA) said at a press conference: "We are the first domestic league to opt to use referees around the penalty area, no other federation in the world uses them."

"Many people have been working behind the scenes to improve the quality officiating, and because of this, it is going to be a terrific season.

"We want to minimalise the chances of referees being blamed for defeats. We continue to talk to players, looking to intergrate the positive advances made in the European competition during the summer this season."

Nicchi went onto state the zero-tolerance surrounding referees fixing matches, saying: "If an official is the reason for any results [outside the laws of the game], then that referee or linesman knows that he will be expelled from the game, completely."

Roma have been awarded three points for their Serie A clash with Cagliari after the scheduled match on Sunday evening was postponed.

The fixture at the Rossoblu's new ground, Stadio Is Arenas, was intially due to take place behind closed doors over concerns for the safety of supporters, as the ground is yet to pass security tests.

However, the clash was cancelled after club president Massimo Cellino invited supporters to disregard the authorities' warnings and attend the match if they had a ticket.

Roma director Franco Baldini called for his club to be awarded three points by default as a result of the postponment, leaving Cagliari to issue a statement branding the chief a "vulture", although his wish has now seemingly been granted.

A statement from ruling body Lega Serie A read: '[The Judge] decided to sanction Cagliari with the loss of the competition with a score of 0-3 (zero to three), also providing the transmission of a copy of the records to the Federal Attorney General of jurisdiction over the conduct of [Cagliari] President Cellino.'

Cagliari president Massimo Cellino has voluntarily suspended himself after inviting fans to a match which had been ordered to be played behind closed doors.

Due to security concerns over the potential arrival of supporters, authorities cancelled the Serie A fixture which was due to be played at the newly-built Is Arenas, resulting in intended opponents Roma gaining all three points without having to set foot on the pitch.

"It was considered necessary out of a sense of duty to the club, the city, the fans and the sporting authorities, especially as it will allow the president to freely defend himself in all courts." explained Cellino in a statement released on the club's website.

Cellino's error has extended Cagliari's search for their first league win of the season to four games, having already accumulated a defeat and two draws prior to the weekend.

"Cellino believes the time has come to proceed towards a definitive and constructive clarification of his position, without it affecting Cagliari Calcio," it continued.

"He will return from America to Italy so that he can protect his interests when faced with decisions that were made with scant knowledge of the enormous and shocking problems experienced over the last few months.

"There have been clear misunderstandings and a lack of sensibility shown towards the efforts Cagliari Calcio have made, directly and without support, to guarantee football at the highest level in Sardinia."

Inter Milan have been fined 15,000 euros (£12,900) after racist chants from their fans about AC Milan's Mario Balotelli at a match against Chievo.
The ex-Inter striker joined their local rivals from Manchester City last month.
Juventus were also fined 15,000 euros after their fans were heard singing territorial songs about rivals Napoli.
And Napoli were the third team to be fined that amount after away fans were adjudged to have shone a laser pen at referee Daniele Orsato at Lazio.
Inter president Massimo Moratti was quick to condemn the behaviour of his team's supporters and hoped there would be no repeat when the Milan teams meet at the San Siro on 24 February.
"I was told about it because I couldn't make out clearly what they were saying. I'm very sorry about that," Moratti said.
"I'm very sorry and I really hope it doesn't happen during the derby."
Earlier this month, AC Milan vice-president Paolo Berlusconi was accused of using racist language to describe 22-year-old Italy international Balotelli.
