Szczesny

Coquelin
Koscielny
Vermaelen
Gibbs

Song
Arteta
Cazorla

Walcott
Giroud
Podolski

Is what Wenger will probably go with. Gervinho and Oxo were lively against Cologne, so may be pushing to start. Diaby ahead of Arteta if he isn't fully fit.

3-1 (Podolski, Walcott, Vermaelen).

Marc Overmars

I'm going for 3-1 as well. There's bound to be one brain fart moment that sees us concede, but we should have too much up top for MON's cloggers.

Hope to see Oxlade get a starting place in central midield. He's looked extremely good in pre-season there.

seems unlikely he'll start coquelin at RB; if he'd had that in mind he would've given him a run out there today.

that looks a very strong team to me though, lots of attacking threat

really sad to see jerkinson, not making any progress at all. he need to go out on loan. yannaris is the one more likely to make it . very determined young man, he really doing his job in very basic and way..hope he do well when he gets his chance next week. or wenger need to buy a proper rb. and flog jerkinson.its sad to say it. but that is the way it shud be if we want to win anything this time

Arteta on arsenal.com:

“We have to start better than last season, that's for sure,” he told Arsenal Player. “We also have to try to keep players fit for longer than we did last season and not concede as many goals.

“This is all possible and from day one we have to think that we are as good as the other teams. I don't see other teams as better than us, I know my team-mates well.

“If everybody is fit, comfortable and ready for a fight then I think we can handle it.”

Arteta, a transfer deadline-day signing from Everton last summer, enjoyed a superb first season at the Club and quickly endeared himself to the Emirates Stadium faithful. And with a year in north London now under his belt, the Spaniard hopes there is plenty more to come.*

“Every year you are trying to improve your numbers and how you can help the team,” said the midfielder. “We will see what the boss will ask me to do. I always try my best and that won't be different.

“It was a crazy day when I joined the Club. The week before I signed there was a lot going on with the big defeat against Manchester United at Old Trafford and suddenly a few players joined on the same day.

“We tried to rebuild very quickly and we did well to get it back but this year we can move forward and everybody has that ambition. I can feel a different atmosphere, the Club is stable and the fans are excited. That is what we need.”

Arsenal v Sunderland

It appears that Arsenal are about to begin life without Robin van Persie.
It feels like the start of a new era but, if you think about it, it also feels like they have to sell their star player every year.
That makes it very difficult for them to win the Premier League and, again, they are not title contenders this time. The wait for a first title since 2005 most likely goes on.
But, on the bright side, I think they will again finish in a Champions League spot, and they should also make a decent start to the season because this year they have done their shopping a bit earlier.
Sunderland are still trying to put the finishing touches to their squad, especially up front. They have had a few bids for Steven Fletcher turned down so I think it was a clever move to go for Louis Saha.
They now have Connor Wickham, Stephane Sessegnon and Saha as their main strikers - and I think they will eventually get Fletcher too.
The future looks good for them this season under Martin O'Neill, but I don't see them getting anything out of Arsenal here.
Prediction: 2-0

Oxlade's got a fitness test too.

I can't imagine Mong will play. Arteta is fine which is great news. Diaby will probably play. Whoever is fitter :handbags: out of cathedral and oxlade will start.

Pod left, giroud centre, gerv right (if Theo out).

Looks the most likely.

For the most part we've been moving the ball too slowly, and not making much movement off the ball.

Only on the odd occasion did things quicken up on and off the ball. Its been easy for SAFC to just sit back and watch us pass in front of them, as usual.

There's little excitement and urgency, but you can guarantee there will be suddenly if we go 0-1 down.

Sunderland don't seem to have much to offer - though we were, typically, opened up on the counter quite easily. I have a feeling the biggest problem is Walcott and Gervinho don't track back enough. We're not getting space.

Going through Cazorla is probably the best option. His first-touch is amazing - he can create a bit of time by taking the ball and turning forward at the same time.

Missing Oxlade or another creative player to play off.

Edinburgh Gooner
18-08-2012, 02:57 PM
Hopefully Wenger uses his new found cajones to get the team motivated some more. Cattermole has had Cazorla in his pocket. Only a few occasions did he get away from him in that first half.

Same ole Arsenal so far, Carzola looks the real, but you can SEE that he's tiring already in this game. Gervinho is looking bright in spots.

Need to pick up the tempo, need better movement, too fucking static. And please get Jenkinson out. With us having the ball so much, we can't have both fullbacks who are absolutely useless with the ball. Would rather have Coquelin as our back up RB.
