Arsenal have had a bad week. They were picked off by Schalke in the Champions League on Wednesday, and they were poor against Norwich on Saturday, full stop. You could overanalyse their performance against the Canaries but from 1 to 11 they struggled.
Gunners assistant manager Steve Bould came out after the Schalke game and said Arsenal were lacking confidence and had not been at their best since the international break.
I don't really understand that, but it is a sign that mental strength is still this Arsenal side's missing ingredient.
When you look at their top teams under Arsene Wenger, he had so many strong characters. In fact, in Wenger's best year - the Invincibles season - all of that side were extremely strong characters. Would you say that about the majority of their players now? No.
Arsenal have yet to convince me that they can have a bad day and still win and therein lies their problem in re-establishing themselves as title contenders.
Having said that, I still fancy them on Saturday - they are at home and they are against a QPR side that give you chances.
Rangers boss Mark Hughes just cannot seem to get a performance out of the 11 players he sticks on the pitch. There seems to be someone in every game who lets them down, especially defensively with a catastrophic error.
QPR's next three home games, against Reading, Southampton and Aston Villa in the next month or so, will be crucial, especially for their manager. If he doesn't have a decent haul of points after the Villa game on 1 December, he will be in trouble.
Prediction: 2-0

Lawro

Vaughan actually has us down for a 4-0 win :haha:

Wtf? No, you don't understand. The guy's a genius. Once in a generation player. If he has an 8 or 9/10 performance, you put £900 on Arsenal winning the CL. If he has a 7/10 or lower performance, you put a gun in your mouth. That's how this works. If he's not Iniesta by half time, we're fucked.

Come on Arsenal :scarf:

Hope we can shed the last 2 dreadful performances with a decent outing here - a 2-0 win @ the very least.

Wishful thinking, but quite possible if we manage to keep the opponent's 1st class sweeper, Gervinho off the pitch. Also, I hope we don't augment their ability to break up our attacks by starting Ramsey.

Back to the positives, I anxiously await the 're-debut' of the like new signing, Super Jack :cheer: him and Cazorla find themselves on the same wavelength and some brilliant football should be on the horizon.

Gervinho's Forehead
27-10-2012, 12:36 PM
What will happen in the first half - We start off brightly, keeping the ball for the first 5-10 minutes but with out actually doing anything with it. The pace we play the ball around is slow and movement off the ball none existent, no shots on target. Qpr get into the game and easily cut us open and if we are lucky we prevent them from scoring with their first shot on target, we manage to get to half time 0-0.

Most will say how shit it's been, 1 or 2 will say we haven't been that bad because they're a little delusional.

Martin Keown, BBC Radio 5 live at the Emirates Stadium

"There's no real experience in this Arsenal defence. In my time the team sometimes had over 2000 appearances between us in the back four. Now I don't think there are 200. The fans are now on the Arsenal players' backs a little bit, because they have seen better over the years. Where are the winners now?"

I don't understand what's happening these days. Where's the movement? Cazorla, Podolski, Giroud...all of them, actually... - why aren't they constantly turning and jinking around? How do you expect a short-passing game to work if you're static? This is not complicated analysis, this is the basics. Where's the off-the-ball work? Are they just not bothered any more or what? Did it only take 3 or 4 decent games before they decided to fuck it? What's going on?

Exactly. This has been our problem for a few years now. Very little off the ball movement and just static play.

It looked alright at the start of the season - though, granted, it wasn't for long. The guy on the ball is standing still...that's fine. But everyone else should be busting a gut to support him. Instead they're all going at walking pace. When we played against Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool we were doing it right. Now that we're playing Norwich, QPR etc. we're supposed to win by strolling it? It's not even about learning lessons any more - it's about no consequences or motivation from the manager.

It's Wenger's coaching because the team is totally different but we have the same problems. Nasri, Cesc, RVP, Song, Denilson, Clichy, Bendy....all gone and we used to have the same sort of static games while they were playing. We can't play this short passing game and watching Barca vs Celtic just reinforces that point. They had to work their socks off to get a team that was desperate to hold on for a draw but the movement, passing range and technique required to break them down is way beyond what we can hope of producing. Technique and having the players is one thing but we're not even getting the movement and work rate right.
