what the fuck has happened to skrtel? that guy used to be a beast. a shadow of his former self. and didnt coates win player of the tournament not so long ago for his national country? did they get wenger'd?
Skrtel had a very good season 2011/12, but I wouldn't say he ever got above decent the rest of the time. Certainly an intimidating fucker though. Last season was a bad one for everyone in our defence, and yet at times we were solid. It was odd. Second highest clean sheets, hardly conceded once, joint-highest in conceding two in a game yet rarely three times. We seemed to improve as the season went on though. For a time Agger simply forgot any sort of marking or positional sense.

As for Coates I have no idea. I always thought he's looked decent most times I've seen him, and even thought he was good with his feet despite being 6ft 5. But he had an utter shocker against Oldham which seems to have sealed his fate. And reading between the lines with Rodgers' interview last month, he's as good as gone. We do have a few youngsters who will hopefully make a bit of a mark next season though, in Wisdom, Kelly and Robinson, though it wouldn't surprise me to see any/all go out on loan.

She Wore A Yellow Ribbon

that wisdom is good. i think kelly will make it eventually too. you need more foreign, coutinho type signings to make it into the top 4. if you utilise the international market you'll probably do quite well. the main worry with rodgers was whether he had the ability to sign from the foreign market as he was at a small club prior, but i guess when you walk into a bigger club you absorb bigger resources + scouting system so it naturally helps out.

Quote from: Ronster on Yesterday at 11:30:48 PM
I don't believe for a second that Andy Carroll cost us £35m, that cost in my opinion was inflated by the Enrique deal. I reckon we agreed to pay the Carroll fee and within the same sum place a deposit on Enrique on the understanding that we would acquire Enrique in the summer. Why would they sell arguably their best performer for the same price they got him? Doesn't make sense to me. Anyhows that's the way I justify the Carroll fee to myself - that perhaps the big lad cost us £25m and the little Spaniard cost us £16m. So with that then, we've lost approximately £9m, with which we've saved by not paying 2 years of his wages at £4.5m a year. So if you look at it like that, like I do, then we're all square. Best of luck to him, just unfortunate that he wasn't a card Brendan wanted in his deck.

Reina on loan to Napoli:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/23372714

Well and truly surplus. It took Liverpool a few years to realise. It will be funny if Mignolet has a dodgy start to his Liverpool career though.

Napoli have bought a new keeper recently, so it's a bit odd. Although maybe not because it's Rafa. Torres on loan to Napoli next?

Shaqiri Is Boss
20-07-2013, 05:48 PM
The keeper they bought is relatively young, so will be backup for a bit.

And yes, as soon as Mignolet was linked it was always the end for Reina. The idea of proper competition between goalkeepers, especially in the run up to a WC, was always a no-go. A little odd with it being a loan deal, but I guess it fits if he will take over from Valdes. We better be getting a decent loan fee and wage % covered though.

And even though he undeniably slipped in the last couple of years,

A club with no European football, potentially losing their biggest name and with the likelihood of a stadium renovation to finance though.

But then I think they bought us for about £300m, covering all the debts, so £350m would seem a bit low given the money they've pumped in. Saying that, I'm not sure how many clubs have ever been sold for more.

LIVERPOOL TRANSFER LATEST

Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori have undergone medicals with Liverpool after the Anfield club agreed fees for both central defenders. Sakho, the Paris St-Germain and France defender, will cost Liverpool £18m, while they will pay Sporting Lisbon around £7m for Ilori.

Both players are expected to be at Anfield on Sunday to watch the Premier League match with Manchester United. Liverpool are increasingly hopeful of adding winger Victor Moses on a season-long loan as talks with Chelsea continue.

A deal to take goalkeeper Shay Given on loan from Aston Villa is, however, likely to go to the wire on deadline day.

So that's five CBs then. I suppose Skrtel will end up going on loan?

This Ilori guy only has a handful of games for the Sporting first team. Brenton loves his B players.

To be honest, I wouldn't be all that concerned.

Apart from the fact it will give him a much needed break, against these teams you need a mobile, fluid and ultra fit midfield. And with Gerrard glued to the spot you just don't get that, as was painfully obvious against you.

Hopefully Xaviboyo and Henderson can step up and play a more natural game, I assume Lucas will slot back into his normal position.

Still, it's never ideal to lose your captain.

To be fair to, Liverpool have shown ambition even when they were struggling. Rodgers is a very good manager IMHO and his record in the market since he's been there has been pretty much flawless. They aren't afraid to splash the cash either, isn't Suarez's new contract worth up to 200k per week?

An incredible set of quotes have been released by Liverpool owner John W Henry this weekend regarding the story of how Arsenal tried to trigger Luis Suarez’s buyout clause for £40m and one pound.
Liverpool’s owner made the comments at the Sloan Sports Analytics Conference on Saturday.
Talking about Arsenal’s bid for Luis Suarez in the summer of 2013, John Henry has now admitted that Arsenal DID meet the Uruyuagan’s buyout clause however Liverpool refused to let the player go regardless.
Rather than live up to the terms of the agreement in Suarez’s contract, the American owner decided he’d rather play hardball and force the Gunners to take Liverpool to court in the Suarez transfer saga.
John W Henry made the following eye-popping remarks

Luis Suarez is the top scorer in the English Premier League, which is arguably the top soccer league in the world. He had a buyout clause of £40m. Arsenal, one of our prime rivals – this year we’re tied for 2nd … we’re actually 2nd because of goal difference.
They offered £40m+£1. What we’ve found … is that contracts don’t seem to mean a lot in England – actually, in world football. It doesn’t matter how long a player’s contract is, he can decide he’s leaving.
We sold a player, Fernando Torres, for £50m, that we did not want to sell, we were forced to. Since apparently these contracts don’t seem to hold, we took the position that we’re just not selling.
It’s been great for Luis, it’s been great for us, and what will happen at the end of the year I think we’re going to make the Champions League, we have a small chance of winning the Premier League this year.
We have 3 gentlemen up front Suarez/Sterling/Sturridge, [they] are young, I think Luis and those 3 could be together for a long time.

That doesn't make much sense to me. On one hand Gordon Taylor came out at the time and said the direct opposite and any explicit clause would take all of 23 seconds to find in your favour. Not to mention that saying this now would surely leave one open to some sort of legal compensation.

On the other hand, it would be the mother of "got one over on you"s!

That's only one stand. The Anfield Road End [where the away fans sit] would be done as well, which isn't shown in these pics by the looks of it. Renovating the Main Stand would take it up to 54k, and the Anny Road to near-59k.

Compared to the current Main Stand, it's fucking huge!

I'm glad they're redeveloping Anfield, rather than a soulless bowl or worse, that Hicks monstrosity.

Those pics only show the one stand being done and there are only plans to do one other. Everything else is staying the same for now I think. So everything with a white roof in that first pic is existing.

Was redeveloping Highbury a possibility for you, or were you boxed in? It was looking for a long time that our only solution was a new stadium.

The atmosphere at the Emirates isn't half as bad as opposition fans make out. The reason they can't hear anything is because redaction is situated on the other side of the stadium to the away end for obvious reasons.

The atmosphere was crap up until about a year ago but it's improved a lot now. This season has been pretty good with a few Highbury songs reappearing. And with our cup win, next season it will only get better.

Most of the times I've been this season I've been placed near the away fans and there's been plenty of banter, so I'm not sure how they can come away from the stadium saying it's 'dead'. I think they prefer to follow a narrative, set by idiots in the media.

The hearts of boy and girl with mutual flame.'
Then sighing, said the other, 'Have thy will,
I am the Love that dare not speak its name.'

So spaketh Lord Alfred Douglas, the lover of Oscar Wilde, whose words above were used against Wilde in his trial for gross indecency. And just as theirs was a love whose name was dared not to be spoken, so too, more than a century later, was the hidden love of a tribe of football fans whose passion stretched all the way from Milton Keynes to Chelmsford.

Borini and Lambert fair enough, they've played enough games in this league to be able to form an opinion on them. Lambert is a donkey and Borini is a... younger donkey.

But Markovic, Manquillo and Can? Can has only played the equivalent of one half of football for us. It was Markovic first start and that manqiullo actually played quite well for us before Saturday. One loss and they're all shit. That's barely even scraping "early days". Of course these players haven't gelled yet. We're 4 games into the season.

At least wait until like 10+ games into the season before completely writing us off. At that point, it's fair game.... though even that is pretty early. *I may edit this after 10 games*

Really? No Ian Rush? Not that I'm an expert on Liverpool history but he should be up there shouldn't he?

Third.

What I mean is that if you asked the vast, vast majority of fans it would always be between those two ahead of everyone else.

Liverpool to make a move for Ings

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/31054584

:haha:

If they sign him it's hard not to see why some of the fans want him out. Is this really the calibre of player they need?

The supposed deal to loan him back is illegal anyway, so either this is his agent trying to drum up some extra cash/interest or we're the most amateurist bunch of tools in the league. Probably a bit of both.

Lambert will likely be gone in the summer, Origi will be back, who knows with Balotelli, Sturridge may be dead and Borini will still be here when he's 50.

Tbf to Ings; young, English, will improve. But yeah, not exactly going to get everyone going.

We need to replace Gerrard. I'm just thankful Delph is off the table.... for now. £40m bid for Barkley

My best friend is a liverpool fan and says rodgers hasn't got what it takes to operate in the high-calibre transfer market. He's used to buying average players cause he managed watford, reading etc. Suppose that's where a decent committee upstairs would help but you have amateurs up there.

Heard a few stories about lavezzi. That's the type of player you should be going for.

I have no idea who has control over our transfers. If you like Rodgers it's the committee, if not then it's all on him. Either way we need to improve because we're simultaneously getting knocked back on our main targets and then spunking money for players who rarely make a quick impact. There does just seem to be this lack of nous, especially when dealing with the big transfers.

As strange as it sounds though, I don't think as many people have warmed to Rodgers as they did to Rafa and (obviously) Dalglish. A lot of Liverpool fans are wary of him. I have to say, I'm probably one of them.

It would be nice to buy someone who is just good though. Not mental, not a prospect, not a gamble. Just a conventional, good, well thought of, normal player.

Mate says it's because he took over from Dalglish, and many were totally against sacking him because of his stature. So they don't warm to Rodgers for taking over from a great like that.

His transfers have been a joke though. 2-3 good players out of £200m+ worth of stock. Shocking.

The man is a total fraud, absolutely criminal the money he has spent on total dross.

Sturridge is without doubt his best signing and even then you could argue he's not worth the money because of his injury record.

33 league goals in what is essentially one and a half seasons is undoubtedly worth £12m.

Rumours of Ancelotti being 'sounded out' whatever that really means. Start of the end for Northern Ireland's prodigal son.

I don't think he'll last the season/summer.

The beginning of the end was probably the Stoke game.

What could Ancelotti do with that squad? Yet another massive overhaul would be needed in the summer and even then probably not enough for a dramatic turn around. At least a 3/4 season project to get Pool back into real contention at the top given how far the squad has deteriorated.

God knows. I still think there's the basis of a decent team in there, but a lot of it comes down to fitness to key players and confidence. We've got neither and haven't had it for a while.

At least with a Klopp he would inject some immediate energy and passion (for want of a better word) into the team, gee them up and get them going. Ancelotti may not bring the same thing, but at least he'd come with the sheer reputation and gravitas of a top manager. Assuming either of them even want the job.

Though playing players in their proper positions (e.g. a kid who's played a few games at right back but otherwise is a CB as our first choice left back going into the new season is crazy), playing with some actual drive and actually having an idea of how to play with the players that we have would go a long way.

It definitely feels like a case of 'when' and not 'if' though. And that 'when' is getting closer with each game.
