ARSENE WENGER will take a huge gamble against Bayern Munich — even though it could result in another Arsenal battering.
Wenger’s Gunners were taught a footballing lesson by the German giants in their Champions League last-16 first leg and went down 3-1 at home.
But the Frenchman admits he will have little option other than to go for Bayern’s throats at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday.
Wenger said: “We have to try to gamble a little bit, go into the game in a very positive mood and get them to be a bit insecure.
“I don’t think we have to be cautious on the night.
“Bayern have such an advantage that we need a goal. If we keep it tight, they’ll always think we have to score three and, the closer it gets to the end, the more comfortable they’ll be.
“We’re chasing the game in a very difficult environment against a team that has no doubts at all.
“Our mentality is to go there, not resigned, but ambitious and provoke things — not go there and think ‘We’ll not qualify anyway’.
“We have to try to put Bayern on the back foot and the only way to do it is to be very positive from the start.
“I don’t think you can just switch it on after an hour if you have been cautious.
“When you have been cautious against a team like Bayern, you risk being 1-0 down as well.
“How will we approach it tactically? I haven’t decided yet. It will be with an ambitious plan, that is for sure.
“Yes, the chance is small but the chance makes the impossible possible. We have to try to achieve it.”
At the same stage in Europe last season, Arsenal were crushed 4-0 by AC Milan before rallying to win the second leg 3-0 at the Emirates.
Wenger said: “We will remember what we did in the second leg against Milan last year when this match arrives.
“We will fight until the very end.”

It's fairly obvious we'll have to just go for it, all out attack. Our defence isn't good enough for any sort of tactical game so the task is simple, get three more goals than them even if we concede nine. Wenger says very strange things, it can't be disputed, but what he's saying here seems reasonable enough. What else can he say? This is precisely the type of game that was lost the moment RvP walked out, and Fabregas and the string of players before them. That's why the Inter triumph of years gone has no bearing on the present day but no harm trying to grab whatever inspiration is available considering the magnitude of the task. Hopefully there will be more than mere words and the team will just go for it. The team selection will tell the story. If Ramsey or Diaby are picked then it's all hot air.

Lukas Podolski revealed on Twitter that he’s got a small injury which he described as not serious but ‘very annoying’. That would go some way to explaining why his participation has been minimal in recent weeks, and I have to say that if there’s any risk we shouldn’t take it. The job against Bayern is nigh on impossible. Of course anything could happen, but it’d be foolish to chance on that when there are still 10 important league games to play.
I have to say though that I’d have him straight back into the team as soon as he is ready. His delivery from the left was a decent source for Giroud, and the fact is he was bought to provide some of the goals to make up for the loss of whatsisface. He’s done that, to an extent, and I think we’ve been somewhat unlucky that his niggle, which has affected his ability to play as often as we’d like, has coincided with Walcott and Giroud hitting something of a dry patch.

rosicky surely has to start in this.

er, right?

Yes, he is full of spirit and will play at right back. Vermaelen will start at the front, some say he is not a natural striker but we have seen Henry, is he not a natural striker? Mertesacker will be playmaker in the centre, he has played 850 times for Germany and substitute 30,000 times but some will say he cannot play there. I say why not? Of course Arteta in goal, I have been manager for 700 years but still people say I will not sign my contract with Real Madrid. Fuck you, you know?

We must be sophisticated and inexplicable. We will win if the little bit pitch is top, top quality and the little bit ref is with his glasses and the little bit fixture list does not make us little bit handbrake on. At this club is it exceptional? I would say yes, perhaps, certainly. Nobody here is insane. Do we know who we will play? No, we will concentrate on our game. Is this correct football? Of course, we will always try to make money but the fans must be patient.

Everyone at the club is delusional. We have players explaining how everything is perfect at the club, except the fact we win nothing. They don't know why. We have a manager who seems to genuinely believe in a team that has won nothing. We have an owner but nobody can find him. I think it would be dangerous to believe in any of this, you could get locked up and the key thrown away.

He has been dropped - and quite frankly, when you have fuck all to play for, you may as well use what games you have to try new things.

Added to this, I'd now persevere with playing Theo up the middle like he wants, and if he can't get it to work or at least show signs of working, tell him to get his ass back on the wing.

Ches has been awful this season. Fabianski is worse. Look at our back five, it's a disgrace for a club that pulls in so much cash. If they could get away with playing kids off the street that cost a tenner a match they'd do it. A goalkeeper "rested" after not playing a game for a week and a half.

It's clear Woijech has been dropped, which is probably for the best as his performances haven't been good enough thus far though why'd Wenger choose this game out of all games to do it baffles me. Not that I see us winning but conceding a cricket score isn't going to help the club in anyway at all.

It's going to be curious to see how Wenger set's up the team tonight. I know a lot of the "we can still do it" talk he was espousing yesterday was all fake bravado for the cameras but if he wants to try and get three goals we're going to be attacking from the get go which is going to leave us very vulnerable with our suicidal high back line. Things could then get bad. Real bad. Or he could have us a lot more contained and we then lose to a respectable 2 - 0 scoreline.

Power n Glory
13-03-2013, 09:12 AM
It’s awful timing really. Fabs hasn’t played since Feb 2012 right? It’s a massive opportunity for him but he’s going to be nervous and I think we’ll concede early goals tonight from blunders. If this goes tits up then we’ll have to bring Szczesny back and hope his confidence hasn’t been broken for the rest of the season. I don’t think he’s been so bad that we’ve had to drop him for Fabianski, a keeper that hasn’t played all season. Almunia used to have a string of bad games and make awful blunders before getting dropped.

I'd like to predict that we would go out and do the club proud, but then I realise we are still managed by the master of humilations. Will we lose 8-2? Little bit difficult to say. It could be double figures. It may be single. We do not speculate.

The only thing that makes sense is that Wumger has taken into account both the scoreline and our performance of last week, realizes that the CL is all over, and trying to set things up for a 4th place league finish. Mind you, on second thoughts that would require a degree of logic from the manager - so his reasons are bound to be different, and he's probably deluded enough to think we can win this...

A very, very wise choice. Why ask the question? Because it honestly doesn't matter what XI are out there tonight. I would think of the away fans, but unless their preference for a 2-0 loss hugely outweighs that of a 4-0 loss, which I dont think it does, it really doesn't matter.

Not sure why he doesn't go with Ox on the left and Cazorla in the middle with Rosicky. We really need some attackers willing to take risks, take on their man and cause some problems on the flanks. Have a feeling we'll play another conservative game. Ramsey can either have a decent performance or play shit it won't be spectacular. Theo has to stay wide and try to stretch play. If he plays on the shoulder of his man all game and close to Giroud he'll get no service. I just hope it's not a predictable performance from these guys again.

So glad he's dropped Vermaelen.

I think Wenger focusses far too much on the psychology of his players and football. Also, I think Souness has a point, I wasn't convinced about what he said when it comes to us training on defence everyday. He practically said that you can't prepare for such things on match day because the game is quicker and it's all about making the right decision then and there. True to an extent but it looks as if our defence have no clue of how they should be organised at all as if they just have to play as individuals. Again, too much emphasis on the mental state of his players.
