..for non Grand Slams

Queens starts tomorrow

Nadal and Murray no. 1 and 2 seeds respectively

The World No.1 Rafael Nadal and Britain's Andy Murray have been seeded No.'s 1 and 2 for the AEGON Championships, and drawn into opposite halves of the singles main draw.

Four-time champion Andy Roddick is a potential semi-final opponent of Murray for the event which starts at The Queen’s Club on Monday. In the top half of the draw, defending champion Sam Querrey and the 2009 US Open champion Juan Martin Del Potro are both potential last four opponents of Nadal.

The Spaniard is one of the top eight seeds that receive a bye into round two, and then he will face either a qualifier or India’s Somdev Devvarman in his first match. The 16th seed Ivan Ljubicic could await in the third round, with the fifth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in his quarter.

Murray is up against either the 2002 Wimbledon semi-finalist Xavier Malisse of Belgium or the World No.99 Matthias Bachinger of Germany in the second round. The 14th seed Janko Tipsarevic is a potential third round opponent, with Marin Cilic lurking as a possible quarter-final foe.

Third seed Roddick begins his challenge for a record fifth title against either big-serving Feliciano Lopez or Dmitry Tursunov, and another big server - Kevin Anderson - could block his path in round three. Fernando Verdasco and David Nalbandian are both in Roddick’s quarter.

The defending champion Querrey has a mouth-watering first match against the talented Japanese player Kei Nishikori. Del Potro opens against Denis Istomin.

Hoping for an A-Rod victory here.

Also Nadal, Murray, Roddick and Del Potro are all taking part in doubles

This isn't as exciting as it sounds as they're not doubling up with each other,
Nadal will team up with Marc Lopez, whilst Murray joins his brother Jamie. Andy Roddick will be on the same side of the court as the 2002 Wimbledon finalist David Nalbandian, against Del Potro and Radek Stepanek . Elsewhere, Jo Wilfried Tsonga partners Nicolas Mahut.

A shame Djokovic pulled out and Murray is not 100%.

The big players rarely go all out for this. Roddick has a good chance here.

Mahut is playing now . If grass was a more prominent surface, exciting players like him would be ranked much higher.

It also helps that Murray is a far better player and has a 7-3 record against him. It wasn't Murray's or the BBC's fault that Cilic pulled out. These are quick grass courts anyway, so it's unlikely players would get tired from a few sets of tennis. Roddick hasn't played much tennis recently either.

I agree, as murry may have beaten him even had he played yesterday. I know its not the bbc fault, but you could see Roddick was tired and Murray was fresh BBC never mentioned that did they.
i suppose it may have helped if Roddick actually played his best instead of saving it for Wimbledon

Nah probably not but then, I guess it was a great moment when Serbia won it last year.

Also, in answer to the first question - it's country vs country. Although there are different parts of the competition going on, GB have Davis Cup matches but theirs are just to get in to the zone allowing you to compete in the tournament proper. Eventually.

Anna Chakvetadze eyes a Russian Political seat

Former fifth ranked player, Anna Chakvetadze has become a candidate for Russia’s Right Cause party in the forthcoming elections for the country. The talented Russian has been fighting with dizziness this season and has been absent from tour since Wimbledon.

The Right Cause Party is struggling as its leader and billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov was kept out from its top spot last week. It has not been confirmed that Chakvetadze would mean and end for her tennis career if elected, but some Russian political analysts are really not seeing it as a possibility. Chakvetadze expressed that she wanted to "try something new" and focus on women's rights and children's sports.

The Right Cause, which is a pro-business party, is believed to have the support of about two percent of the population. The Moscow Times revealed, "Right Cause will pose no threat to the Kremlin after it decided to trade President Dmitry Medvedev for a second-tier female tennis star on its party list for the elections."

http://www.tennisearth.com/news/tennisNews/Anna-Chakvetadze-eyes-a-Russian-Political-seat-345047.html

TENNIS: World number two Maria Sharapova says her compatriot Anna Chakvetadze's decision to run for the Russian parliament would make it "tough" on her career in the sport. Russian media reported that the 24-year-old had been named as one of the three parliamentary candidates put forward by Russia's Right Cause Party, a pro-business party with limited public support. "I think it obviously takes a lot of time, so it's tough to do two things, two pretty big things at the same time. But if she feels strong about it, obviously it's a personal choice," said Sharapova.
