BRITAIN will be drenched in rain for the next ten days — ending the country's shortest drought ever after less than a week.

Experts have predicted unsettled weather and downpours across the UK, with up to three months' worth of rain set to fall at the start of next week.
Racegoers at Ascot's Ladies Day came prepared with brollies, and were determined not to let the wet weather dampen their spirit.
Flooding

Wimbledon and Glastonbury are both expected to be soaked — raising fears of a flooding similar to the one the Somerset festival experienced six years ago.
The country has had almost continuous rain since Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman declared a drought last Friday, solemnly urging millions of people to do all they could to save water.
But Julian Mayes of MeteoGroup said today: "In terms of water, the drought has clearly ended. Next week will dwarf what some areas had through spring, with areas receiving in a week the rainfall they had in three months. Widespread rain across all of Britain is due tomorrow."

http://img.thesun.co.uk/multimedia/archive/01328/bad-weather2_682_1328816a.jpgBrolly good time ... female racegoers don't let rain dampen their fun at Ascot

He added: "The South East will get rain falling widely right through next week. It will be very unsettled and cool - and remains unsettled until towards the end of June.
"Tomorrow will be particularly wet, with steady rain arriving in the morning in the South West and Wales, by evening in drought-hit areas including East Anglia and Lincolnshire, and in the North and Scotland by night.

http://img.thesun.co.uk/multimedia/archive/01328/bad-weather3_682_1328809a.jpgCan't face it ... worker hides his head under umbrella to protect himself from downpour

"It will be raining simultaneously almost everywhere in Britain, with 24-hour totals of 20mm to 30mm expected in the South West and Wales, with 10mm in the South East but the East Midlands receiving more rain."
Meanwhile, BBC forecaster Philip Avery said the end of the drought echoed a similar scenario more than 30 years ago.
He said: "Those with a memory of 1976 will recall how the breaking of that year's drought coincided with the appointment of a 'Minister of Drought.' The past week's rainfall won't have made up the spring deficit in many parts of England and Wales, but does coincide with the official declaration of drought in several areas."

http://img.thesun.co.uk/multimedia/archive/01328/glastonbury-05_1328822a.jpgFloods at Glastonbury ... tents at festival were drowned in water in 2005

Farmers will welcome the rain after they were predicted to lose up to 15 per cent of the wheat crops this year.
Things WILL look up for those worried the British Summer has been rained off — as forecasters said July is expected to be much brighter.

What I don't understand is how people who have lived in this country since they were born still have this quaint idea that in summer, every day should be scorcio and druy, when the British Iles have normally had a temperate climate since the last ice age.

Not really interested in the gambling side to Vegas, I'll just have a flutter or 2 just for the sake of it. Hoping to catch some shows, we've already booked tickets to Penn & Teller.

JUST days after a heatwave Brits have been warned to brace themselves for a cold snap with temperatures plunging to -20°C.

Nervous councils are busy stockpiling 1.4million tonnes of grit in preparation for another harsh winter and snow falling as early as next month.

On average councils have ordered 1,500 tonnes more salt than at the same time last year as forecasters predict the UK could be just weeks away from a sudden collapse in temperatures.

Forecaster James Madden, from Exacta Weather, said: "I expect the most frequent and heavy snowfalls to occur across many parts of the UK during November, December and January at present."

Temperatures dropped as far as -20°C last winter and Mr Madden said of the upcoming cold snap: "It is likely that temperature and snowfall records will be broken."

The Local Government Association (LGA) revealed authorities were aiming to stockpile more salt for October than the total amount used last winter.

Scotland has already seen snow this week, just days after record October temperatures saw bikini-clad sun seekers hit beaches around the UK.

And forecasters have predicted temperatures in the seventies (Fahrenheit) on Sunday and Monday.

Uphill struggle ... car stranded on hill in Yorkshire last winter

Councillor Peter Box, LGA economy and transport chairman, said: "Whatever surprises the weather may have in store for us this winter, motorists can count on council highways teams being better prepared than ever before to keep disruption to a minimum."

"This year councils have more salt and better plans in place to make it go further while even more volunteers and community groups have been lined up to help with the great gritting effort."

IT'S hot out there — but you'd better get your skates on if you want to enjoy it while it lasts.

Sun-seekers up and down the country have been enjoying the glorious weather so far this week — but forecasters expect temperatures to dip in time for the weekend.

And there are even predictions of SNOW on the way in the north next week.

Today temperatures were closing on yesterday's record for the hottest day of the year at 23.6C at Aboyne, Scotland.

Sun-seekers ... Mel Keenan, Ellie Johnston and Amanda Bowers in Tynemouth, Tyne and Wear
Scorching sunshine has sent the mercury soaring towards 24C (75F) though the tinderbox conditions have brought hundreds of firefighters out to tackle wildfires destroying swathes of the countryside.

Across the South and Midlands Brits have already seen temperatures over 21C although the mercury is still to top Britain's hottest ever March day.

It was a sweltering 25.6C in Mepal, Cambs, on March 29, 1968.

However the recent unseasonable heatwave has delivered the hottest March for 44 years and has already broken five date temperature records — while a sixth could be set today.

But as schools break up for the Easter holidays this weekend forecasters expect temperatures to plummet to around 12C with sleet and snow possible in the north of the UK next week.

Met Office forecaster Charles Powell said: "Today and tomorrow most of the UK will see fine and sunny weather with temperatures between 20C and 22C.

"But the high pressure which has been giving us this lovely warm weather will then move to the west so there will be less warm air and more cloud and cooler temperatures.

"By Saturday the temperatures will be down to 12C and 13C. We will still get some bright weather but we will lose the wall to wall sunshine we have enjoyed.

"Next week it will be more unsettled with a risk of rain too. There's a possibility of a few flakes at the top of the Scottish mountains."

One more time. Global warming increases the AVERAGE temperature and - maybe more importantly - it causes the atmosphere to be more dynamic. This not only will increase the strength and frequency of storms and other turbulance, it will also change general weather patterns - some places will end up colder.

It also effects the jet stream and where it is located and how easily it moves, for instance between north of the UK and south of the UK. Thus you will find it more likely in the future that we will have a few hot days then suddenly it will be brass monkeys for a few days, just like happened over the last few weeks.

Oh - and you might find that drought periods will increase and water will all be metered and charges for it will increase substantially.

The good news is you will be forced to drink beer instead of water, so it's not all bad news. :good:

Last year I was working on a project for work that looked at the effects of temperatures on oil or summin. Anyway, there was definitely an ususual trend in the last couple of years - and it didn't really take complicated methods to work that out. It's been well reported in the news - we had one of the warmest summers in Aug '10 to the coldest winter ever in Dec '10, to the hottest April ever in 2011 to a relatively cold summer, then we've had snow in February this year. And this is data that goes back nearly 100 years (1916) - no 2 year period has seen anywhere near the shifts that are happening now. A little worrying - but how much is linked to emissions etc. I don't know - I don't know anything about environmental effects.

Britain pathetically excited about sunshine

THE prospect of decent weather has inspired truly heartbreaking levels of joy across the UK.

As forecasters predicted temperatures bordering on the pleasant with tolerable amounts of rain, Britons were scampering in circles like over-enthusiastic termites, hardly knowing what to do with themselves.

Office worker Tom Logan said: “It’s going to be hot and sunny! Not just hot or sunny, but both at the same time.

“I’m going to eat my lunch outside with my sleeves rolled up to my elbows. And you can’t get much better than that.

“Everything’s going to be alright forever.”

Sales co-ordinator Emma Bradford said: “I’ve bought a straw hat and a Summer Fruits Oasis in anticipation of the first beam of sunlight penetrating the dense wall of grey cloud.

“Let me just check out the window.

“Nothing yet. But it’s coming. It’s coming.”

The prospect of several hours’ pleasantness has already inspired gloating headlines about how it’s going to be ‘hotter than the Meditteranean’.

Montenegro resident Alexander Vrbensky said: “My British cousin called me about it, I had to pretend to be angry, like ‘oh no, I’m so jealous, grrr I wish I lived with you in Swindon, when can I get a flight?

“Then I went to the beach with a group of beautiful girls and ate large fruits, same as every day.”

Yup, been living here for 3 years now. A place to live when you've retired perhaps but for us hipster folk it's not a great place to be IMO.

And yes, it's very popular for marriages for white folks with small guest lists. If you're going to be all asian and invite your accountant and your sister's husband's mother's cousin along then not so much.

Probably is true. I'm going on holiday this month and whenever I go away the country usually gets it's hottest spell of the year. Typical.

15 to 20 cm. widespread disruption. Travel chaos. Hours of lost work time. Burst pipes. Grit and salt shortages. Accidents. Snowmen.

They have a "warm atlantic front"

We have Wenger.

It's gonna rain.

BAKING Britain will enjoy the hottest day of the year tomorrow at 32°C (90°F) — but the heatwave could kill up to 500 people.
The sweltering weather is set to last a MONTH.
But the “very young and very old” are at major risk as their bodies struggle to recover from heat stress.

The first victims will have died in last week’s 25°C heat, says the Department of Health. It estimates 500 more deaths than usual.
Yorkshire will be hottest today at 28°C, before a peak of 32°C in the South tomorrow — the highest in July since 2006. This year’s previous high was 29.7°C at Heathrow last Sunday.
Firms are braced for a sickie bonanza. And the heat has lured thousands of giant jellyfish to Cornwall.
