I'm so annoyed and angry if we end up buying him , I was so happy when I heard that Liverpool were going to waste ~20million on him, as he's way over-rated. IMO money could be used to fix our shit defence - Cahill and Samba to arrive .

How the fuck did United get so lucky to get Young for only 16m !

Thoughts ?

Been covered by Ach in transfer thread, but will say again Downing is so bad they named a syndrome after him
not sure who I stole that from

Young was in the last of his contract, which helps. Though you could say £16m is way overpriced too.

I guess it depends if (you read the tabloid rumours) we're both in for Mata too.

Downing hasn't really stirred emotion at Liverpool, which is both harsh and expected. "Sky sources" is a good way of increasing one's fee though.

Downing was better than Young for Aston Villa last season. Much better in fact. Would have been disappointed if we got Young. He's a bit shit.As for Downing, we could do better but ultimately we're a bit shit as well and a player like Downing is the kind of level we go for these days cos no one better would be interested in playing for a shite manager like Wenger

No chance we will spend 20M+ on a player this season, even though it's exactly what we need (not shite like Downing, granted).

Doubt we'll even spend more than 20M net with the likes of Bendtner, Almunia leaving.

Don't worry about it.

20 million, there is no way we should be paying that for him
for that we should make a move for Hazard but tbh we might as well ignore any big prices for players until we know exactly how we are selling players for

If we got him for 10 mill then yes but for 20 mill villa can feck off tbh

Downing is talented better than anything we have, we'll never pay anywhere near 20 million though so no chance of this happening.

Plus we're only going to see 1 or 2 signings, so we're unlikely to sign another winger after the African bloke.

Adam Johnston is the only England winger I'd have from any other team tbh. The rest are lol tactic.

I think he could do a job for us. Dalglish is a shrewd manager and buys players to do a job. Downing is more direct and creates more for strikers than Nasri and would link up well with Gibbsy. He tracks back well and puts his foot in.

OK he's not top class but then look at Man U and the players who aren't top class but do a good job, like Nani, Park, Fletcher, etc. Would prefer a player who would harden up our soft centre but for me Downing gives us a change when tippy tappy ain't working. Not worth £20M but I suspect Liverpool aren't paying that either.

i saw you write somewhere else that a big clubs bidding for players indicates their talent...well so far it's liverpool and no one else

Don't think so, I said there's no way we'd bid that kind of money and that we'd get him. At no point did I say they'd sell either, in fact after selling Young I'd be very surprised if they did.

Given the garbage that currently exists in our squad, I'd say there's a fair few Aston Villa players who could improve our squad if we added them. However, that doesn't mean we should buy someone like Downing, because there are better players out there in the market, but it's another indication of how crap some of our squad actually is.

Of all the players we could chase... How many opportunities has Downing had to make an impact? He's a journeyman. Imagine losing Nasri and being lumbered with Downing and only having £2mill to show for it. Good grief, we're slipping backwards a lot faster than I imagined. It's such a shame the players we already have haven't been coached properly, because they have the talent. It will be horrible having to watch Cesc and Nasri (and even Clichy I bet) killing it at their new clubs while we recycle lesser players who couldn't achieve in a proper environment, never mind the strange place which is the Arsenal training ground where defending, crossing, set pieces and the other basics of football are considered surplus to requirements.

Tosspot is too strong a word. But he oversaw Liverpool's transition to mediocrity and walked while it was happening. He was one and done with Blackburn when they had their moment in the sun as the Chelsea of the day and as a reflection of himself, they did just about everything possible to throw the title away. Liverpool will max out at 4th this season under him, and even without the distraction of the CL, I doubt they'll do it.

This story/link of Downing to Arsenal doesn't have any credibility IMHO. Villa have just rejected 15mill from Liverpool for him and are going to fleece whatever club shows any real interest in Downing.

I doubt Arsene would spend 10million on him let alone 20million.

Sky Sports sources understand Stewart Downing would prefer to join Liverpool, despite interest from Arsenal, and the deal could be finalised on Monday.
The Aston Villa (http://topics.skysports.com/Aston+Villa/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif winger was the subject of a £15million bid from Liverpool (http://topics.skysports.com/liverpool/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif on Wednesday, but the offer was immediately rejected by Villa Park owner Randy Lerner.
Arsene Wenger's Arsenal, who could lose Samir Nasri (http://topics.skysports.com/Samir+Nasri/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif and Cesc Fabregas (http://topics.skysports.com/Cesc+Fabregas/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif this summer, are thought to have attempted to hijack their Premier League rivals with an £18million bid.
But England winger Downing (http://topics.skysports.com/Stewart+Downing/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif has set his mind on a move to Anfield and Liverpool are negotiating a price to buy a player who has two years remaining on his current contract.
Having already lost Ashley Young (http://topics.skysports.com/Ashley+Young/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif to Manchester United, (http://get.lingospot.com/link/?@li2=9872&is_lhid=0&key=IZHOSPQW&ps_id=SPb1bAKN9t&q=QQ:lqOTqjptCQHB_7BD7{ORJJOBIIOGGGPVOqptJ:pnCUOqm j_J:pnCSO4aJm8CIHHRA:GAHUKVV&section_key=RDXAYSZZ&site_id=skysports.com&url=http%3A%2F%2Ftopics.skysports.com%2FManchester %2BUnited%2F%3Fsection%3Dfootball&url_key=_TaCHO0CAPZ7_U_GGK&v=1&~boot=1310380326193)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif new Villa manager Alex McLeish hopes the former Middlesbrough star will stay and the club are under no pressure to sell.
QualityIt had been reported, with Arsenal demonstrating their interest, Liverpool had lined up Wigan's Charles N'Zogbia as solution to their search for creativity in wide areas.
The fact Liverpool director of football Damien Comolli and manager Kenny Dalglish (http://topics.skysports.com/Kenny+Dalglish/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif have travelled to the Far East for a pre-season tour was also thought to indicate there was no imminent transfer activity.
But Sky Sports sources understand a deal for Downing could be finalised in the early stages of next week.
It has been questioned whether the soon-to-be-27-year-old Downing meets the criteria for young talent sought by Liverpool, which has already resulted in the signings of Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam. (http://topics.skysports.com/Charlie+Adam/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif
But Dalglish wants quality in wide areas and Downing's crossing ability is viewed as a vital factor in the short-term target to return the club to the top four of the Premier League.
