Hands up if you thought Arsenal dropped a lot of points from winning positions last season?

The spectacular nature of some of the slip ups tend to skew people's view.

Points dropped from winning positions
2010-11 13
2009-10 15
2008-09 14
2007-08 14
2006-07 6
2005-06 5
2004-05 15
2003-04 10

And Man Utd dropped 14 last season, which is one more than Arsenal did.

Perhaps Arsenal's downfall was more that they struggled to come back from being behind.

Points won from losing positions
2010-11 10
2009-10 13
2008-09 16
2007-08 21
2006-07 22
2005-06 9
2004-05 11
2003-04 21

Been saying this for ages... We have a bigger issue with attack than defence... We always went behind, difference is we could normally turn results around - now, too much is riding on a rather flimsy defence, and when your not playing with 3 CDM's and playing attacking footie, it's an issue. Not helped by having 8 standing on the edge of the box.

But if you can fix the defence then you don't need a lethal attack to keep you in the game, neither do you have to worry as much when the forwards are injured or off form.

You can't win a league with a poor attack no matter how good your defence is. And the reason why we have so many supporters is because of the teams attacking philosophy.

Getting 38 points in a season is closer to relegation than it is winning the league.

in a 38 game season West Ham's 42 points in 2002/03 is the highest for a relegated side
Actually, it's low enough to be relegated

I agree - I have always thought our inability to take advantage when we have possession - getting the ball to the opposing box and then pissing it away - is the main cause of our lack of silver over the past few years. I know our defenders make howlers but so do defenders in other teams. What is frustrating is running with the ball, getting to the other box and then stopping and waiting for someone else. The players like Henry and Bergkamp would take on the defender and make an attempt rather than just dick around outside the box. Even if you don't score, there is a decent chance that in taking on the defender, you will get a free kick or pelanty if he brings you down. Worth a crack and even if it works only (say) one time in four, that would give us enough to win a lot of those games we drew or even lost by the odd one.

There is something wierd about the players not going for it. That is why players like Wilshire and Ramsey are what I like to see - they are the kind who are prepared to take the chance and take on defences.

I'm not saying ditch the attack, I'm saying the attack becomes more valuable and effective if the defence gets sorted. No attack, no matter how good, can be relied on to dig you out of every hole a bad defence can put you in. Ideally you want to be strong in both areas but an average attack won't hurt you as bad as an average defence, as we know only too well.

Mind you, we go into this season with neither so not worth worrying about it.
