He's certainly effective and has an almighty shot on him. But I wonder what he'll be like in 2/3/4 years when he loses that yard of pace and agility, whether he's actually got any footballing ability. Darius Vassell....

And you mean the first Olympics. In ancient Greece.

2002 World Cup was my happiest time at my old job. We had a projector and screen set up in a meeting room, I'd get up early and get in for the 7am game, go do some work then back down for the lunchtime game. And in those days my old company had employees from quite a few different nationalities so for most games there's be some local interest.

I rate wellbeck. Sort of. He is a useful wcog because he plays the right options and works hard and stuff. A current-Rosicky type player who is never going to be great. And Cleverley is Arteta-ish, so I like him. Johnny Evans is decent (I know he's not English, but just on man Utd players) I don't like Smalling who seems to be a total liability every time I see him play. And I don't understand what Phil Jones is.

Wenger defends Hodgson:

on half-time team talks...I have been aggressive at half-time, yes, but you have to adapt to the culture of your team. When you go to Japan, you have to be cautious, because what looks normal in an English dressing room, suddenly looks completely shocking in a Japanese dressing room. You adapt to the culture of where you are, but sometimes you can say one word stronger and that is not politically correct, and that can happen to any manager.

on the scrutiny...
The problem is that… people always want more and the cameras are everywhere. We would like to have a bit more confidentiality because we know we are a bit in danger in these situations. I can go out of a game and we have a penalty turned down in the last minute and you can go overboard in the corridor with the fourth official, and you wouldn't like a camera to be there. The demand to see more is always bigger, but who pays the price? Sometimes it is the manager.

There isn't a person in or following football with an ounce of common sense that wouldnt back Hodgson on this.

Unless they had an agenda.

The former Real Madrid playmaker had been struck by illness but made a 30-minute cameo in Germany's 1-1 draw with Italy, and Jogi Low has now decided to trial other personnel

Arsenal playmaker Mesut Ozil will not take part in Germany's friendly clash with England at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday night.

The 25-year-old, who made an appearance off the bench against Italy on Friday, has been withdrawn from the squad, along with Philipp Lahm and Manuel Neuer, as Joachim Low plans to test different personnel at Wembley.

"The game against England is the last chance to test tactics and personnel before the World Cup," Low said in a statement.

"Lahm, Neuer and Ozil are the absolute core, for me it's important to give other players in key positions a chance to prove themselves against a great team like England."

Ozil has recorded the joint-most assists in the Premier League since moving to the Emirates Stadium, helping Arsenal climb to top spot, but was struck by illness this week.

Meanwhile, Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker joins the squad after recovering from a virus suffered prior to the 1-0 defeat to Manchester United last weekend.

Good for us IMO, hopefully they will be fit for Soton games. :coffee:
