Arsenal would have been runners-up in the Premier League last season and Blackpool wouldn’t have been relegated if match officials hadn’t made mistakes. (See table at bottom).
These are the headline findings from extensive new research that re-examined 713 ‘significant’ incidents – penalties, goal line incidents, offside goals – across the Premier League’s 380 games in 2010-11.
Arsenal ended up fourth with 68 points but should in reality have won 72 points and finished second to Manchester United.
Manchester City should have won nine fewer points than they did and finished fourth.
Blackpool and Birmingham should have avoided relegation while Wigan and Wolves should have been relegated along with West Ham. (West Ham should have had seven more points than they actually got but would have gone down anyway).
The research was conducted by broadcaster and journalist Tim Long for his radio documentary, Beyond The Goal Line: Football’s Technology Debate. The programme explores the need for technology, and how officiating errors can make a material difference to clubs, and versions are being aired in Australia and Britain.

Proves what we all suspected. Oh well.

Mistakes are one thing, outright favouritism and cheating of the like displayed by Poll, Bennett and more recently Dowd is something else. There were no mistakes made in that Newcastle game last year, it was all very deliberate. Wouldn't be surprised if CGI is rigged up when more technology comes into the game. Maybe that's what the delay is, trouble with real-time cheat-o-vision.

premier league is corrupt as every league in the world.

there has been corruption in italy.

there has been corruption in spain.

there has been corruption in france.

anyone who thinks there hasnt been any cheating/corruption in the premier league, the 'best', 'most watched' and 'most exciting' league in the world, is out of their mind.

I prefer the "Had Wenger got it right last season, we'd have finished 1st" line

Nah, not much you can complain about after been cheated out of so many points.

Don't think 4 points over a 38 game season is much to moan about, that's essential two errors that didn't go in our favour (two draws instead of wins).

Video technology will change this but FIFA are retarded so can't see this changing in the near future.

Corruption had nothing to do with our shocking collapse.

I wouldn't trust stats like that too much, it was probably more than 4 points imo, looking at incidents like this doesn't study a systematic bias throughout a match whereby one team gets away with more than the other and the 50-50s always going one way, that can have as much of an effect on a result as giving/not giving penalties/free kicks.

Ofc, we're all biased so it might be completely manufactured but I look at the consistency of decisions from the last 18 months and it's hard not to see a pattern.
