Wayne Rooney is the only English player named on the 23-man shortlist for the 2011 Ballon d'Or.
The prestigious award is the most coveted individual honour in world football, and is currently in the possession of Lionel Messi, (http://topics.skysports.com/Lionel+Messi/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif who is looking to claim it for the third successive season

Rooney is looking to be the first Englishman in a decade to take the award, with Michael Owen the last one to take the honour in 2001.
Former Arsenal (http://topics.skysports.com/arsenal/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif captain Cesc Fabregas (http://topics.skysports.com/Cesc+Fabregas/?section=football)http://static.lingospot.com/spot/image/spacer.gif is one of eight players from Barcelona to make the cut, whilst Real Madrid boast five candidates including 2009 winner Cristiano Ronaldo. RVP was worth a nomination.

But I guess a lot is based on CL and International performance of the respective players team.

I'm pretty sure Cesc is only there because he now plays for Barca.

We already pay far too much attention to what Europeans think. Henry was head and shoulders above any of their little darlings for years, yet he used to struggle to get the recognition he deserved. Europeans never judge anything on merit, it's always prejudice, favouritism or outright bribery with them. Best thing to do is ignore them and vote UKIP.

I think it is looking like more of a joke that Andre Villas-Boas was nominated. Given the squad he has, he is not doing well at all. (If it is true that he has had a big row with his players following our win, then he is going to get some poor results if he has lost the team - hopefully that tension will last a while.)

Not really, considering his incredible season with Porto.

Plus, if he is a joke manager it doesn't really say a huge amount about our result on Saturday.

And best team in the world having most players nominated shocker.

Yeah, but Cesc wtf? He was utter garbage for us.

Van Persie simply had to be named. He wouldn't win it (and rightly so) but he should deserve recognition by getting on the short list considering he has been better than anyone else in England. Him and David Silva have been the stand out players in our league.

As I said, I remember back to Henry being overlooked when clearly he was the best player on the planet by a mile. I don't get excited when a crooked organisation starts making announcements about who it favours. Fuck 'em. Let them clean up their house and then we can take them seriously.

Will they sell as many shirts globally as Rooney?

Sure, why wouldn't they?

Is not like Rooney's the poster boy of anything other than toilet stains.

So is Del Bosque, obviously he couldn't have managed Spain to win anything so I can only imagine they are still including the World Cup in it.

on a serious note, its beyond a joke that rvp wasnt even shortlisted. by far the best striker in england in 2011. think second place in terms of goals is rooney and he is miles behind. think he has 19, rvp has 30 something

Its world player of the year not England player of the year. Even iF RVP got shortlisted which was never going to happen he'd never have won, You have to win stuff to win it, it seems.

Either that or Barca have paid uefa again.

Iniesta has been much better than him, then again being barca captain has its advantages i suppose.
