To which my answer is always “do you lock your door when you go out?”
Which, of course, everyone does. Because they understand that there are bad people out there.
If you leave your front door open and you get robbed then is that your fault?
Not really, but is your insurance going to pay out? Are they balls, because they expect you to take some responsibility for keeping your possessions safe.
I have literally never heard anyone say
“why do they keep telling people to lock their doors, tell people to stop robbing”.
But that’s the argument you get around “rape culture”.
Why don’t you tell men to behave themselves, rather than telling women how to act.
Men ARE told that, but if you’re the sort of scumbag who is going to rape women then you’re probably not going to listen to that.
Basically, it comes down to this: we all have some responsibility for our own safety.
It would be nice if we lived in a world where there were no bad people, where you could leave your door open and not get robbed, where young girls could go out dressed how they like, walk home on their own, accept lifts from strangers.
But we don’t live in that world, so take some responsibility for your own safety.
Literally everyone understands this, that’s why they lock their doors.
I wish people would stop pretending they don’t understand that when it comes to women being attacked.
