Fabregas was absolutely pivotal to the way we used to play, arguably the whole team was built around him. You only have to look at this season to know that losing him was always going to be a watershed, a seismic shift in our play-style.

So why would you expend funds (£16.5M - more than we have paid for anyone) buying someone in the same position as the first guy on the teamsheet, your critical lynchpin and captain, when you have far more pressing weaknesses in other areas of the squad? You just wouldn't.

He wanted to go, once he wanted to go he'd never have been the same player had we kept him, not much could be done about that. As for the Modric thing, we never needed him, like UTD or Chavs or City thats why none went in for him at the time not just us. Same with Hazard.
