Congrats to him, but surely it's not that impressive. Freefall is freefall. Adding height doesn't make it any less terrifying.

I think you mean it doesn't make it more terrifying. And I disagree - surely more can go wrong the longer you are in freefall.
I don't think this claims to be a scientific breakthrough; it's a cheap guinness book-type marketing stunt. But it takes a lot of balls to do it.
Yeah, I did indeed mean "more terrifying".
More can go wrong perhaps, but he had an entire crew to help him through it. I doubt he was in much danger. It would've been more dangerous to do a solo normal freefall dive from a plane, with no tech support.
