Maradona documentary film on Channel 4.

Really good so far. Crazy world of a crazy and crazy talented player.

And I'm sitting here drinking gin, slimline tonic and a slice of lemon. Poncey bastard.

Ah yes. I saw that was on. I had forgotten but when I saw it was on I had cleverly set it to record. Will have a look.

You'll be drinking salty tears if our Alphabetical PL Title win is confirmed.

Ooo yeah didn't think of that.

I'm a rugby fan even if this season isn't called off.

    Finally watched Joker.

Wanted to give up several times, was riveted at other times. Really dark, really disturbing. For some reason his constant smoking was highly disconcerting. Why? Can't explain it. It teases. You're always waiting for him to snap. But when he does, it's a bit of a letdown and fairly predictable. Can't decide if this was enjoyable or not. It took effort to watch it, it's slow in many places. But the acting performance from the lead role pulls it through regardless. This is Joaquin Phoenix's Joker that could conceivably exist, which is a bit scary, against Heath Ledger's stylised and cool, but ultimately fantastical, cartoon alternative. Ledger's is more watchable, Phoenix's is more lock your doors because you never know.

Joker seems too indebted to its inspirations to have anything original to say. It doesn't even try to hide the blatant homage to Taxi Driver and The King Of Comedy, considering De Niro is right there at the centre of it. And not to mention A Clockwork Orange. The difference here is that the central character comes across as overwhemingly self-pitying. The film then nudging you towards sympathy for his supposed plight would also make you dangerously sympathic towards wanton violence and anarchy.

Joaquin Phoenix's physical performance is powerful, but he pulled off something similar just a year earlier in You Were Never Really Here. It is eerily similar at times and the overall effect of the film is far more unnerving than Joker.

I didn't feel any sympathy for the character at all, not even when his childhood story was revealed. Which was a bit of a cliche and throwaway excuse anyway. A little pity at times, sometimes repulsion, mostly embarrassment on his behalf. I thought the writing for the cops investigating him was weak. They'd have been all over him at a much earlier stage, though I guess this is a fantasy city and a fantasy police force so maybe they do things in a more fantasy way. Clockwork Orange had a much bigger effect, to the point I haven't really wanted to watch that again. You get it first time around. With Joker, I suppose you could dig in several times and find more themes and concepts, but there's too much padding to push through to get there so not sure I'd make the effort.

Haven't seen You Were Never Really Here so that's going on the list.
