Basically, it's about how internet algorithms filter out what you see, so on FB it makes you see some friends lots in your newsfeed and others not at all without you even knowing about it. And Google does the same thing, so two people in the same city might see wildly different search results for the same search terms.

Interesting. I assume Google's filters would be purely for national variations.

No, not just national variations although that may be a factor.
It actually tailors the results to what it thinks you might be looking for by building up information about you from searches.
Not sure it's sinister but the point of the video is it means you tend not to see things which may broaden your horizons.
