You're right that it was largely just that, but denial would be grist to the tories/media's lie machine, he's got to kill it and as i say it's an excuse to purge momentum

If he's going to play their game (like Bernie Saunders always does) then he's beaten before he starts. Now his whole agenda will be a witch hunt where there are no witches. He'll have to burn a few victims in public to satisfy the mob. All the while the media will be gathering wood and ducking stools. And nothing else will get done. And even if he lights enough fires and expels enough political enemies, his agenda has already been driven by external adversaries. So when this is done, the next crisis will be created and off he'll go again.
