I’m a bit conflicted about this.
I think it’s a bullshit tax. Your parents were already taxed on their income plus paid VAT and all that.
Then you get taxed again when they pass down their inheritance to you.
That said…you only pay it on an amount over £345k. I’m read it’s only about 4% of people who have to pay it.
It feels like an unjust tax but if they scrap it only the richest people in the country will benefit.
Heard the point made the other day that the wealth increase from buying a house years ago hasn't been taxed, so IHT would be the first time you pay any tax on it.
That said, given the house prices around where my parents live, I'll be in the 4% who do end up paying it. I have therefore decided that it's completely immoral and I want it abolished
