The government is reportedly planning to enforce a total social lockdown across London and large parts of northern England combat a second wave of coronavirus.

Under the new lockdown measures being considered people will be banned from mixing indoors, according to The Times. All pubs, restaurants and bars would also reportedly be ordered to shut for two weeks initially, although schools, shops, factories and offices would stay open.

Good idea! Too many pubs have survived the first lockdown. Just. Another couple of weeks should kill them off.

If people can’t go out to socialise they will just do it at home anyway, which is apparently more risky. Shutting down hospitality in London sounds pointless to me, it’s one of the most busy cities in the world and these places are completely reliant on tourists and other day trippers. They’ve already lost a lot of the trade the workplace provided given most of the office workers are at home now, so being forced to shut again would finish a lot of them off.

What is so bad about the idea of protecting those who need it but letting the rest of us get on with it, under “covid-secure” measures? At this rate there will be nothing left to come back to whenever some normality can resume.
