i think this is the one thing the government can't win on either way they go. If they lock down over christmas, a lot will be upset and probably ignore the rules anyway. I suspect most will be pushing the rules in current format to their limits over Christmas anyway.
if they carry on with their Christmas plans and cases spike again, they will also get criticised for that.

I agree, there isn’t really anything they can do “officially” that would help. Best thing to do is just everyone get on with their lives. I’ve been out multiple times to pubs and restaurants with people not in my household and not once have I been asked to clarify if we share a household or not. So it looks like businesses aren’t even following the guidelines down to the letter either and why would they, when they stand to go bust without people socialising.
Right. When we had a pub lunch with my in-laws we were sat at separate tables but they weren't 2m apart which my niece (who is an Environmental Health Officer) said they should be. What are pubs going to do, go bust?
