Chatted to a mate this morning who has spent his whole career in finance - not in "the city" but managing pension funds, so in more actuarial roles and now is part of pension fund regulation.
He has a lot of money, but he isn't evil.
Anyway...I talked to him about the GameStop thing which he actually hadn't read that much about as he said it's a bit like a busman's holiday reading about finance stuff out of work.
His view is that there's nothing inherently wrong with hedge funds taking the position that a stock will fall but he does agree that there should be some regulation to stop them doing so in a way which makes them fall.
Ultimately, he said, the price of a stock generally comes back to the fundamentals of a company.
I have no real strong opinion about any of this as I don't really understand the finance world that well, but thought I'd pass on his 2 cents.
