The GOP candidates really need to change their approach to Trump.

Only a couple are prepared to condemn Trump. The others are too scared to piss off his base, who they see as potential votes for themselves.

What they need to be doing is colluding to get a single, consistent and coherent message across. The charges against Trump are legit. Up to now they've been on the "witch hunt" bandwagon purely out of self preservation but that's not enough to win the presidency. They have to beat Trump now and they can't do that while they're justifying the Trumptards "witch hunt" position.

One message. Trump is a criminal. That's the only way they bring Trump down from his current 60% to under 50%.

No it won’t

The only chance they had and that was a slim one was to simply have one Anti Trump candidate. But the Republican Party is the Trump party. Trump voters trust his inconsistent ramblings more than they trust their own family members. He is the political equivalent of Keith Raniere.
I’m not having a go at them per se, this type of behaviour doesn’t come out of nowhere. Trust in institutions and media is at an all time low and for good reason…it’s just a pity this displacement then takes the form of unquestioningly believing a practiced liar.
Fucking CNN today scratching its head that he has increased his lead in pollings for Iowa caucus after the fourth inditement, really that surprises you does it?.
Ultimately when people become cultists the more you attack the cult (fairly or unfairly) the more the cultists will double down and become defensive. It’s called escalation of commitment, you have emotionally invested in something or someone and even if you have doubts you are enclosed in the sunk cost fallacy.
But even when support for him is thinner, they don’t like him necessarily but they hate the people he hates and therefore in their mind it’s a case of making an alliance against a bigger enemy.
And Trump for all his crass impulsivity isn’t a fool, he knows what he’s saying when he says “they aren’t going after me, they are going after you”.
