I reckon they’re heading for quite a few years in the wilderness, like they were pre-2005 before Messi’s emergence. They’ve spent so much on flavour of the month players that haven’t made the impact they were expected to.
Messi has been so good for them the come down is a crash landing that’s impossible to avoid. There is no transition from a player like that. You just have to accept that unless a player like that comes along again, you’ll never reach those heights again. As we have found out ourselves post Henry.
