    Tokyo Olympics

Well, I guess we should at least have a thread for it.

Really struggling to get into it. The lack of crowds isn't helping. Nor is the time difference.

PS: Skateboarding is not a sport.

That snowboarding think where there is 4 lanes and they race is admittedly brilliant.
But anything where you have to do "tricks" and someone says you did it better than anyone else...nah, not a sport.

(which doesn't mean it isn't good to watch)

yeah the races are brilliant but also the tricks too

after all what's ice dancing (or whatever they call the Torvill and Dean event), gymnastics or dressage etc?

or would you ban them too?

(actually i'd be quite happy to)

I'm a bit sceptical of any "sport" where someone has to judge how well you did it. That said I do quite like ice dancing, and horse dancing while we're at it.
I think I'm generally being a bit grumpy and too old to accept new things
There are other sports which are sports but which shouldn't be in the Olympics - I'm looking at you, tennis and football. Those already have bigger prizes outside of the Olympics.

It does seem a bit random what is and isn't in there, as if they're trying to stick to "traditional" sports and then moving with the times and admitting some of the more peripheral sports but they can sometimes feel tacked on. But then is an Olympic sport really a thing outside of track and field? Maybe Javelin was the Skateboarding of Ancient Greece.

I give it 10 or 15 years before e sports are inducted.

I dont mind golf etc being in the olympics but i would change it so only amateurs can compete. As letters says, the olympics should be the pinnacle.

For amateur sport that would be the case. Take Olympic boxing, many go on to have successful professional careers but while amateurs, Olympic gold is the aim. Whereas for professional golfers, they’d rather a masters win I’d bet but for amateurs, Olympic gold would be top of the list.

    Yeah, it's a weird mix isn't it?

You have the boxing which as you say is an amateur competition but winners often go on to be professionals.
Then you have Tennis where every 4 years it almost becomes another competition on the professional tour.

    Odd.
