We appreciate the passion," Mattrick said in an interview with Gametrailers, via GamesIndustry.biz. "It's important that people share their ideas, but people are imagining outcomes that we believe are worse than what it's going to be like in the real world.
"When we designed the box we paid attention to what it means to connect to the internet. The average internet connection is working the majority of the day. People are imagining that it isn't, but I don't feel that's the world we live in."
Apparently, Microsoft "absolutely" expected games enthusiasts to resist Xbox One's online setup, but feels it has built a "future-proof" machine. "I think in the long run, we'll build a global leading product that people are going to love and embrace."
In any case, he went on, "we have a product for people who aren't able to get some form of connectivity - it's called Xbox 360. If you have zero access to the Internet, that is an offline device."
Elsewhere in the chat, Mattrick cautioned players at large against making judgements without the benefit of firsthand experience. "It's very important to them and they're opinionated. And they're smart. So they look at all those things and say 'hey, is this going to impact me in a negative way?' And until you use it, it's really hard to understand what all the advantages are."
