He seemed completely obnoxious to me

A FB friend described him as a “comedy legend” which I raised an eyebrow at.

    Scouse tranny more like.

He was Radio 2 in more ways than one. Comfortable, passive, mainstream, shit.
It's better to burn out, than to fade away.

Comedy Legend is a bit much….essentially just light entertainment really….Les Dawson for a more tolerant audience

But no issue with the guy, seemed like genuine decent individual…even a patron for local animal sanctuary to me…helped prevent it from closing.

My late mum was a fan of his

He wasn't fit to lace Les Dawson's boots.

Have no particular issue with or opinion about him as a person really. But I never found him funny which for a comedian is a bit of a sticking point. Humour is subjective, obviously.

    Les Dawson wasn't funny either

Python, Tony Hancock, Tommy Cooper and Laurel & Hardy aside (and those are very big asides), there was no-one funny on TV before the 80s when the Not the Nine O'clock News and Comedy Store crowd came along and shook it all up

I find him funny. His writing is brilliant, the way he uses language.

Morecambe & Wise are funny. Beyond that, and the ones you've mentioned, a lot of it is a bit "my mother in law..." and seems dated by modern standards.
There's some other good stuff though. Pete & Dud, Milligan's Q series, TW3. The Goons (more radio than TV),
Some of the sitcoms like Dad's Army and Steptoe and Son still stand up. Fawlty Towers was the 70s.

Steptoe & Son should have stopped at the original one-off TV play

I thought about Morecambe and Wise and would tip my hat gently towards them but you're right about Milligan, comedy genius

i guess i'd wrap Fawlty up with Python

Dad's Army had it's moments but i's been repeated to death

actually I'd stand up for 'It Ain't Half Hot Mum' - now deemed politically incorrect, it was the best Perry and Croft sitcom ever IMO, brilliant characters and writing with some actually quite pointed comments about class, heirarchy etc

Pete and Dud, TW3 and the Goons are all before my time - i realise the Goons influenced Python but like a lot of times when you listen a good band's stated influences, the influencer band aren't actually very good...

Actually I also used to like the Goodies although i realise some people think they're a bit naff

anyway, the point is, apart from all the above, what did pre-80s comedy ever do for us?
