Sounds like Wayward Pines is going to very similar too, when that comes out next year?

Although the writer there is claiming Twin Peaks as his inspiration.

Speaking of which, Twin Peaks is back on SyFy Channel - still tears a strip off most of todays TV shows.

I didn't get round to watching it when they originally showed it last year, but BBC2 are currently repeating series 1 of Peaky Blinders and I must say, it is top quality.

I don't think there's much basis in reality here aside from the fact that there were gangs in Birmingham at the turn of the 19th century and the inconsistent, sometimes-veering-into-scouse- Brummie accents are funny, but other than that it's fantastic so far.

Cilian Murphy is great as usual, Sam Neill verges on camp but stays the right side of it during his quite brief appearances, it looks brilliant for a British production and it's more compelling than any other mega-budget gangster drama (contemporary or period) in recent years. Think Gangs Of New York set in 1919 Birmingham, but more subtle, better acted and more dense.

It should be up on the iPlayer for a few more days. Series 2 starts soon too.

I think the writers thought each episode was an hour, then told that it was 45, so wrap up the baddy tout suite Rodney!

MO and Maccy make it sound little bit good when browsing on here.

Is that new Flash thing good?

Watching the first season is a bit of a chore but Arrow significantly improves over time. It lacked direction at the start because there wasn't much of a story arc, then the episodes took on a more serial element with recurring characters, stories and it gradually got darker too.

Flash is pretty much the same show (Arrow spin-off, same writers) just a little more light-hearted. On it's own it's probably not great but it's a fun add-on that Arrow fans should enjoy.

If you do give them both a go, you can't start Flash until you've seen the first 2 seasons of Arrow, because season 3 ties in and exists at the same time as Flash begins, and there are crossovers.

Also, I'm currently watching True Detective series 1 and it's brilliant. Even N_Q would find it difficult not to be impressed by it. In fact, it would probably be his second best programme after Sex And The City.

Matthew McCoughaghey's character and performance dominate everything. That's not to say the other elements of the show are disappointing, more that it's one of the most interesting and intense creations written for the screen and refreshing in a world where every other character has to be a sub-Sherlock Holmes loveable anti-hero.

The constant menace, otherworldly atmosphere, sudden bursts of vicious action and the generally superb writing are a bonus. Needless to say, a Must Watch.

fairly sure it is set in the 20th century

I doubt many in the uk would say homosexual sex should be illegal but most would probably say having sex of any kind in a public place should be.

is forcing a treatment on people with a sexual desire any more enlightened than making treatment illegal for those with a desire they don't want? also I wouldn't say the 21st century is particularly enlightened but that is for another thread.

I don't think he was 'in the right' but he lived in an era when what he did - what he was - was illegal, so he had to suppress those feelings and sneak around. And that wasn't right either. I think that's the point that was being made.

I watched it out of curiosity. It's not completely terrible, but it just pales in comparison so much to the painfully superior American and Nordic dramas it's trying so obviously to ape. And this in a time where British TV is finally coming into it's own, with budgets, writers, actors and ambition finally matching the level that US TV has been outputting for many years.

Also, watch True Detective Letters to see a truly gripping murder/mystery/buddy cop thriller.

Watched few new sitcoms recently. All highly recommended.

Community - loved this from the very first episode quickly became my favourite sitcom. 10/10. Season 6 starts next week with all the cast changes I was concerned but having seen the new trailer it looks like it'll be really good.

Arrested Development - this took a few episodes for me to get into but when I did it was amazing may have pipped Community to my to spot, though cut down in its prime season 4 was hit and miss though Gobs second episode is up there with any of the originals. 10/10.

Noticed Bob Loblaw on here who is/was that?

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia - 8/10. Another very funny show, currently coming to the end of season 5. I don't think its quite as good as the other two but still well worth watching. If hadn't started it straight after Community and Arrested it'd probably be 9/10. Got Dayman stuck in my head. Dayman Ahhh fighter of the Nightman Ahhh....

Justified and House of Cards are on my to watch list.

Book spoilers:It will depend if the series continues to follow the book or not. The fat bloke who writes the book already said it is not the end of Jon Snow, having said that it is possible that the character will only make a return in the final season in 2018-19. The series didn't revive Catelyn Stark, however I am pretty sure they will bring back The Hound to finish off his duel with The Mountain in the next two books. :coffee:

I'm not doing a Cripps and doing the hilarious opposites thing to go against the grain, but it's not as good as I'd expected. It's not bad by any means, but I feel that basically every character being a bit of a cunt makes it hard to empathise. It's entertaining enough watching the gradual disintegration of everything unfold, but the fact that the hell hole is of their own making makes it all a bit hollow. Everyone's character arc seems to be either normal person becomes a humongous twat or humongous twat becomes an even bigger twat.

I feel the best aspect of the programme is the humour, especially from some of the supporting characters.

Ah. Most of us could identify with the characters because we are twats. No-one claims it's subtle, rich work but it's definitely an entertaining, well-written show for the masses. Not sure I agree that the problems are their own making. If you're disabled/retarded or have terminal cancer it's not your own fault. Season 1 tried to sell us the rationale of Walt going mental but they could've sold their desperate plight a bit more.

Season 5 is a better resolution than other action dramas considered in the top tier of television. Keep watching.

True Detective seems to have been hammered everywhere.

Is it that shit? Or just bad compared to the first series? Vince Vaughan being in it instantly set off the warning signal though. Colin Farrell veers from utter shit to occasionally inspired. McAdams is the only safe bet. The Sagna of the team. Always at least 7/10 even if the supporting cast/film is crap. Unless Victor Moses/Eric Bana is ruining him/her.
