Yeah, it makes perfect sense to have a somewhat calm episode before the shitstorm. But it feels like we'll never get the smaller moments ever again, as even now it feels slightly rushed. Which is understandable, of course.

Bran is creepy as fuck and awlsome at the same time.

Will Bronn stay completely about the women and money until the end? Or will he join with Tyrion and Jaime? In fairness, he's the only one who's stayed completely true to his own code all his life.

No one else is dissapointed that they built up the white walkers as this massive threat to humanity from the very first episode and then they pretty much fail at the first chance?

Also feel a bit cheated that we didnt get a showdown between Jon and the Night King. I thought that was going to be the main thing he was brought back to life for.

Definitely worth getting into. Seasons 1-4 are four of the best series on television. I would hold them right up there with Breaking Bad and Band of Brothers. The quality starts dropping a bit after that (series 6 was good though) but it is still spectacular to watch.

Saw the first Chernobyl last night too, solid but not great. Does it remain the same or get any better? They did a good job out of making a particle seem threatening though.

Bit harsh on Killing Eve I think Letters. I’d liken it to Breaking Bad in that the characters traits are heightened. It’s not exactly a gritty, grounded show like Line of Duty. The whole premise of the show is fairly ludicrous, but thats half the fun of it.

SMatthews

The Society

Bit of a weird show. First couple of episodes were good - group of high school kids go on a school trip but then there's some problem so they have to be brought back home, except when they all get back to their town they find that no-one else is there and they can't find any way out of the town. So far, so mysterious. But then the whole rest of the series that is hardly mentioned again, it's all about how they form a society and make rules. I guess there's a clue in the name of the show but it's odd how a set up that strange is mentioned so rarely for the whole rest of the season. There's a bit more about it at the end which hints that a season 2 might get into that more - where are they, can they get home and so on. Overall it was OK but I wouldn't watch a second season unless it got more into that.

If you think Westworld looks too convoluted to bother with, try Altered Carbon. The second series just went up on Netflix a few weeks ago, but the first especially is mostly good fun. It's basically Blade Runner meets 40s film noir, but trashier, more violent and you can watch it mindlessly too because the action scenes are really impressive.

Except for the 8th episode last season, that was phenomenal.

Just based on the one trailer I've seen, it seems to be a more linear story and a bit of a departure. But that will obviously last about ten minutes until they start with the mindfucks again. The Nolan brothers would surprise us more if they made something completely straightforward for once.

I wouldn't mind if it was all just Hopkins GOATing it up again. As good a cast as it has, every time he's on screen he completely elevates everything.

No, I'll probably watch Westworld. Just haven't had much time recently. Really I'm looking for something that doesn't depend on the same modern tropes. I like character development to occur through action rather than 400 years of exposition. Watched ep 1 of War of the Worlds. Could have written that whole series better myself in an afternoon, while sitting on the bog. So formulaic.

The last thing I watched where I actually lost myself in it and was locked in was the Two Popes. Slow moving, for sure. But so much to it. It's that sort of engagement that entertains me, and modern day shows are so lacking. Apart from that one exception that surely must be out there.

Picard. Awful.

Homeland 8. Regurgitated.

Treadstone, got half way through one episode.

I'll try Altered Carbon, when the mindless mood strikes.

So, I'm out of Woking Dead. Why didn't Negan just smash the bald bitch's face in when they were at the latrine? Instead, we see the lesbian cunt pull a knife and threaten to cut off his balls. Then he falls in shit. This has NOTHING to do with plot. Everything to do with woke. That's why this series sucks now, like so many others. The woke faggots have ruined it. Fucking apocalyptic survival or the fittest where everyone is sitting around telling us how they feel. There's fantasy and then there's bonkers woke fantasy. Can't be doing with the latter. Bullshit. Was Negan a giant pussy in the comics too?

WHY, WHY, WHY, is Negan just blindly obeying the lesbian cunt? Fucking kill her and make a run for it. Isn't that what his character would naturally do? This is pathetic writing. All designed to tear down a character that genuinely was alpha male. That's all this is about. 37 mins in - still in the cave. Carol has become this pathetic loser that flies in the face of her whole character development over 9 seasons. Serves her right for being an actual strong woman. Strong women aren't required, only imaginary strong women that are woke and get offended when people say Donald Trump. I hope that can save this new pathetic wretch because... Well, actually I'm past caring. Go on then, kill Carol. Officially I mean. You've already done it in terms of the character, you stunning and brave beaver lickers.

Niall_Quinn

It's very on-point for the overall Western theme. It's very good.

I didn't feel the need to watch it as soon as it aired last year, so I'm only half way through so far.

I like that it feels like sci-fi/adventure programmes of the 60s/70s, although obviously it has more of an overarching story which is expected.

Episode 4 also felt like a big budget version of Hercules/Xena/Star Trek/Stargate. When shows often had a bigger storyline simmering in the background, but throughout the run you had enough standalone stories which were sort of 'mission of the week'. Just an unpretentious 40 minutes of escapism.

The Witcher also had that same air of daft fun for some episodes, but was bogged down by too much exposition and the odd timeline thing.

With the Mandalorian, it so far has that lean Western tone it's going for but also feels like a picture book or silent movie with the occassional dialogue. It's closer to Wallace and Gromit or Wall-E, in that you could watch it just visually and still get a similar experience.

Master Splinter
07-04-2020, 07:16 PM
Speaking of which, Better Call Saul is every bit as good as Breaking Bad was.

I won't call it overrated because I hate that term, but Breaking Bad was no more than a solid crime drama that was elevated by a great lead performance. It's pretty standard stuff that's been done with more nuance and better writing in various films and shows before and after.

Not to say that it wasn't a decent ride while it lasted.

Is Better Call Saul much different or does it tread similar territory?

It's similar in that it follows the transformation of the main character from a mundane individual through to a markedly different, almost polar opposite. But the support characters are also very well written and have credible but intertwined arcs. It's not as dark as BB, though it can be equally dark in places. It has a comedic, slightly tragic strain running through it. Can be slow at times, but the accelerates in all directions. Could be one of those shows you either love or hate. It's the only TV show I actively want to watch, compared to the rest which I watch because there's nothing else on.

Not the same but in the same ballpark, I prefer Liar Liar.
The I of L is a good idea, but too often Gervais uses it to mean that people are just outright rude to each other - being unable to lie doesn't mean having some kind of Tourettes where you say whatever is on your mind about someone unprompted no matter how rude.

It's OK but overall the idea is better than the execution, IMO.

After Life.

Season 2 just “dropped”, if that’s the right word, on Netflix.
Just seen Episode one.
Reckon this is Gervais’s best work since Extras (which IMO is his best work, it’s better than The Office, IMO)

I agree, extras and this are is best shows.

I think in afterlife, he has really good balance between some brilliantly funny scenes with some really moving scenes as well. Not easy with such a sensitive subject and making people laugh with it.

Ozark.

It’s been a while since I’ve been so hooked on a show.

I tried. But it was too slow for me, and I'm not bothered by slow. But this was slow.

Yeah it's a slow burn but the characters are great.
