The bit about whether the woman bought a chicken was spurious but some of the gadgets raise eyebrows.

I'll catch that first part up then.

I wonder if this woman would work in any of these places herself. It's easy to pick a job for someone else. Notwithstanding that there hasn't been a place they've visited with an actual vacancy yet...

Also, the programme makers seem to have picked extremes. One the one hand a well-qualified young person doing good in society (but not paying income tax and therefore not important in the other peoples' eyes) and the obvious arsehole that applied for about 25 jobs in 4 months.

Surely another solution is to tax people less in the first place so people take home more of their pay [and presumably therefore pay them less in tax credits etc], instead of cutting benefits to such a level that you can only just live on.

To be fair to the programme they did point out that the vast majority of the welfare budgets is on pensions. I don't agree they've picked extremes. They all seem fairly typical families and none of them are Jeremy Kyle caricature chavs

The guy with the gadgets wouldn't have been able to obtain them on the benefits he gets - he sponges off his family. He has no pride whatsoever and as long as his family do shit like pay half his mobile contract, he'll never move on.

Agreed, it is completely wrong, but the solution is so complex. The overhaul of the benefits system could really be a step in the right direction if it was aligned with employment policy that seeked to cut out (or reduce) corporate welfare by bringing in a living wage. The NMW was a step in the right direction - a massive step, but more needs to be done.

Got to be careful on the pride thing. Rich ****s use their media to push that line. If you don't go to work and hand over half your money to a bunch of spongers in parliament and the rest to a bunch of foreign thieves who run the utilities then you have no pride. If we all sat at home and refused to work the shit would just end. A week would be enough. People who support the system are just as big a problem as those who abuse it. The abusers are only copying their "betters" after all, like wanker bankers.

Clearly missing my point. Sky tv is not a nesscisity, it is a luxury, you don't have to have sky to be good parents nor do you need it either, if you are struggling to pay for food and need food banks to help you but pay for sky, your piroities in life are wrong.

You can't sit there amd go, we'll pay for sky because benefits can do that and food bank gives us free food. It's wrong.

You do know that people acquire things prior to becoming unemployed. If Letters lost his job and signed on, you're the type of judgemental person that would be blathering on about his top notch tv funded by benefits. And as for Sky, unemployed people also need to provide some entertainment for their kids and having Sky is pretty much the cheapest way of going about it.

Is it fuck. Clear difference in being on jsa etc for a short term, ie a few months and keeping your sky, and like these people who have been unemployed and on benefits for years.

I'm sorry but if you have been on benefits for years, and pay for sky instead of food, that's wrong. There are number of ways to entertain children, sky is not one. Free view has children's tv, and guess what? That's free, so you can watch that and pay for food too.

Freeview is shit for kids. My son does not watch a single programme on channels like Pop and Kix because they are full of garbage. The only reason I have any Sky package at all these days is for kids programmes.

I believe the family you are talking about - both parents are in work. And I also believe you have no idea whatsoever in the pressure of parenting children, providing them with entertainment and the costs in doing alternative activities. Transport costs alone to activities can exceed the monthly cost of Sky.

I also suspect you don't really understand much about the vast range of people that are having to resort to foodbanks and the things that occur that are often unexpected that lead them to do so.

None of the benefit families in that BBC show had jobs, they were living solely off benefits, hence the point of the program.
If you are on benefits, and have been for a while, ie years not months, and you pay for sky, instead of food and end up being short of money to pay for food, that is wrong. Benefits are there to support and buy essentials. Not luxury items, which sky tv is.

Food banks are there to help those in desperate need of food, if you can't afford food because you spending your benefits on luxury items such as sky, then although food banks won't turn you down, you are depriving someone who might really need food because your piroities in life are wrong.

This family, live in Ipswich, from looks of it, fairly central location, now, I know Ipswich and there are a large amount of parks there, which kids can go to, especially in the summer and entertain yourselves there, parents can go to. Play football, play on the swings etc, that's free because they could easily walk there. Free view, although while not an expert on it's kids channels, does have Ceebeebes, CBbc and citv. Fairly standard kids channels. They should suffice for the kids. I just can't accept the principle, of yeah I spend my some of my benefits on sky, amd go to a food bank which is free. Furthermore, if you are a parent, them surely you need to provide for your children, the first you do is make sure food is on the table, not pay for sky.

If you are newly unemployed then fine, I accept it's unreasonable to stop sky etc etc, but after years, you have too. The state is there to fund essentials, not luxury items

There were two programmes on - which one are you talking about?

As for Sky - why not stop there - have them sell their TV. I hope for your sake there are no unemployed on the 'My £9.50 Holiday' show.

BTW - that isn't how most Foodbanks operate. Need is assessed in most cases by independent organisations and agents.

I'm talking about the nick hewer one. Thursday 9pm bbc1.

With food banks, on their show it spoke to the one this family went too, it said it never rejected anyone, so assumed it was all same. Take that point back.

As you say, tvs can entertain children. Plenty of cheap ones out there with free view, plus if you did have one before benefits, no need to sell but there is a need to cut out the luxuries like sky

You may think it stupid, but there are parents that will personally go without food so that their children can at least have some semblance of luxury - even if it is only a poxy £26 a month watching Sky.

Instead of sitting the kids in front of the TV they should study. Make something of themselves and get out of the benefit scrounging cesspit they were born into.

Allowing them to just sit there watching TV only keeps the cycle going.

Also instead of cash, coupons should be given so only the essentials can be bought. No booze/fags/holidays/Sky etc.

Let the masses ebb and flow on the whims of a ****ish establishment that helps itself to billions of quid in welfare when its casinos fail. Corporate welfare never had much care for the taxpayer. Meanwhile we're distraught about the injustice of a jobless family with Sky TV. Fucking ****s. Kill them and kill their kids. We hate them. Good job too, provided we are divided and ruled, all is well. If you imagine the taxpayer has something left once the usurer has been satisfied it's always worth making sweeping generalisations about the jobless. If they float they are guilty. Why not? The BBC says we're better than them and if it's on the TV it must be right.

I don't usually go with GW in terms of tv shows or films as there are plenty of shockers but I have heard a few good things about Luther through more respectable sources and it does have the great Stringer Bell in it therefore a few questions about Luther.

1 - how many seasons have there been?
2 - how many are left?
3 - worth getting the boxset on DVD?
4 - any sex, nudity, decent looking bitches?

1 - Series 3 is currently airing on BBC1
2 - Watch this space
3 - Probably. But if you like playing opposites, then no.
4 - Brief sex and nudity according to IMDB. Idris Elba is a decent-looking brother.

I loved the first season of Family Guy but never liked it after that. Not sure why really, I think it's that the characters seemed too one dimensional. Homer is an oaf but when push comes to shove he does love his family. Peter Griffin doesn't really seem to have any redeeming features.
Overall Simpsons > Family Guy IMO but it certainly isn't what it used to be, it's done everything it could. I don't watch newer episodes as a rule, the ones I've seen have been disappointing.

Meh. We'll see. The Simpsons movie was still good so they can still do it when they try.

I can't see it working - even if both sets of writers were on top of their game (they aren't), the difference in animation styles are going to be shown up and it will look awkward. They know this, hence the albino gag, but one gag won't compensate for something you will clearly notice throughout the episode. A bad idea and one that smacks of a desperate network executive trying to boost two waning yet still enjoyable shows.

From what I understand it's pot luck. The speed of connection could possibly help but it will just come down to who managed to hit refresh at the right time. I remember reading last year there could have been up to 500,000 registrations (with only 180,000 tickets available), so it's a bit frantic and the chances of missing out are likely unless you're militant about it.

You can book on the phone as well but I wouldn't have thought that would be anymore effective.

There's a resale at some point in the new year but the odds of getting tickets are even less for that.

It's really not, is it? That said, they're almost guaranteed to get the ratings - they've set an early precedent by wheeling big Sam out in ep.2, so that will keep loads of a people watching, simply for the off-chance of a cameo from Robert Downey Jr and chums, or a tie-in with the next Marvel film...

Wouldn't have put too much money on 1980s Davis coming out with such comedy gold.

The TV series tells children about their various bodily functions with the help of two characters, Biss and Kajs. It livens up the physiological explanations with musical numbers from the Rump Orchestra (bottoms dressed in hats, glasses and ties) and what Kiselev calls "singing genitalia"

This sounds like the best programme ever

Walking talking Penises and Cunts?

Sounds like normal TV to me.

And they say Christmas TV is shite (and they are right). Danny John-Jules on Mastermind, December 28th. No news on specialist subject yet though..

Sky and DVDs have killed Christmas TV - years ago a Bond film or the blockbuster from a couple of years back was a real treat. Now we can see it all on demand pretty much when we want.
That and there not being many good series that I'd want to see Christmas Specials of.

Yeah it was great checking what movies were on as they were often the network premieres.

A more simple time. :rose:

Indeed. I know it would just mean the schedules are filled with even more trash in their stead, but I do not see the point of a Flagship Film on Christmas Day now. Other than hoary old "tradition" (says he who will be getting the Christmas Radio Times soon)

This is welcome news. I disagree with the commenters: a lot of the recent specials have been good(and I didn't like 'The Queen Of Sheba'). Last year's was outright trash though, so giving it a rest this year is extremely wise.

Are you saying you'd be willing to miss an hour-long special of 'Mrs. Brown's Boys'?

The 'mood music' suggests Maccy and I will be subjected to exactly such on Christmas Day this year... :(
