I think this is the highest team total by a opposition in england for some time. I don't remember India getting this many. Not a match-winning or even drawing total by any means but England will have to only bat once if they are to win.

McNamara That Ghost...

I don't think a batsman should be able to kick the ball away if it looks like it might hit the stumps.

Syn
26-05-2012, 11:16 AM
I've seen this shillingford guy play. He is the definition of village. He's a pie chucking off spinner who can't spin it. He has a bowling average of 41. They shouldn't have bothered with a spinner. Get Tino Best in for the comedy value.

McNamara That Ghost...

360-9, Roach goes. Bresnan is cleaning up the tail. Four-for.

Syn

Hang on, why is rampaul no.11??? He's probably their second best batsman after chanderwum. Insane, unless he's injured or something.

McNamara That Ghost...

Windies all out for 370, Swann with the final wicket. Prior stumped Shillingford.

Syn

Might as well take an early lunch. Don't see the point of the batsman or exhausted bowlers playing for 15/20 mins.

Quite a silly point to make.

Syn
27-05-2012, 10:49 AM
At work I have a mouse mat with all the field placings labelled. Know them all like the back of my hand. The worst fielder in the team/tired fast bowlers normally go to third man. Slip is the old boys club. Gully/point is for the mavericks. Silly mid on is for the guy who gets bullied.

Cripps_orig
27-05-2012, 10:49 AM
Ive heard of them, of course. Just dont know where they are.

So when the commentator says the ball is going towards the silly point mid on offside ganguly position, fuck knows where that is

Surely that isnt serious?

I remember playing cricket during school once upon a time. I was told to go field at silly point, had no idea where that was so i stayed where i was and just pointed at the batsman and called him silly

He did get out next ball so i took credit for that

308-5, Bairstow had no idea what he was doing. He goes for 4.

Cripps_orig
27-05-2012, 11:35 AM
End of Bairstows Test career?

If he cant score against this powder puff pub team bowling attack, he has no hope v the quality of SA (not the english ones) bowlers later this summer and the world class bowling of India in the winter

Syn
27-05-2012, 11:45 AM
Kohli failed against West Indies (albeit in west indies) and then went to australia and was the highest Indian run scorer in the test series. #justsaying But, yes, this bairstow guy has no test tekkers anyway so not sure what he's doing here. That said, I can't name you any promising English batsmen.

Time for Broad and Swann to come in and swing a bat at it.

Prior needs to sort his life out. Bowled by Sammy? FFS.

You can watch Narine whilst the Windies have Shane Shittingford bowling in England.

Come on village cricket.

Syn
27-05-2012, 02:00 PM
Shane Shillingford is bowling for the West Indies in this Test.

Shillingford has that same pushing-back-at-an-imaginary-person-trying-to-hug-him that Harbhajan Singh does. He gets good bounce. Has a first-class bowling average of 25. Experience over many years of cricket. Has a ten-wicket haul in Test Cricket. Will one day have a stand named after him.

He’s not Sunil Narine.

Sunil Narine has never played a Test, but will probably make more money out of cricket over the previous few weeks than Shillingford ever will. Right now more people are clicking on Narine’s ESPNcricinfo profile, the one that shows his Mohawk well as he smiles cheekily, than have probably ever looked up Shillingford’s profile (which is him looking rather uncomfortable and like he was taken by surprise).

Shillingford was overlooked for the first Test for a debutante; there is not an attack in world cricket that would overlook Sunil Narine right now.

Shillingford is a workhorse, there’s no magic, mystery or mayhem about him. That doesn’t mean he isn’t good. But he’s good as in handy, not good as in Narine.

Narine has tricks that Shillingford will be able to talk about, but probably never replicate. But it isn’t just the tricks that Narine has, his magical mystery ball is amazing, but his normal offspinning delivery is at the moment the best spinning stock ball in world cricket. It bites, and bounces. And even when his carom ball (which if you can pick it, does very little at all) does get worked out, Narine will still be world class.

The best spin bowlers use tricks to confuse batsman who can’t pick it from the hand and embarrass the tail, but it’s the stock ball that you need if you want to be a Warne, Murali or Kumble. Narine is a long way from joining this company, and while his stock ball is far better than that of the last mystery phenom, Mendis, once people pick your trick ball, that’s when it really gets tough for bowlers.

Shillingford’s stock ball is okay. It’s certainly not horrible, and when he’s on a helpful surface he can bowl for an amazing amount of hours and take quite a few wickets. On a surface like this, against a team who is willing to attack him, he looks a bit out of his depth.

In this Test so far, Shillingford is going at 4.7 an over. In the 2012 IPL so far, Narine has so far gone for 5.2 an over.

Today Narine will be watched by close to a billion people, Shillingford by only million or so. One playing for his country. One playing for his financial future.

I hope Narine plays a blinder for Kolkata Knight Riders, wins the IPL and sets up his entire future in one night. But more than that I hope as soon as humanly possible he plays for his region in a Test match.

West Indies have more than a few well-meaning workhorses who are helping them put in slightly improved performances, now they need some magic. And right now, that’s Narine.

http://blogs.espncricinfo.com/sadisthour/archives/2012/05/shillingfords_handy_narines_ma.php

He's very good. Would've given England some problems for sure. But who wants to write cricketing history when you can play in the Pepsi 6's Dr Martins league here, in the wonderful Chinnaswamy stadium, in Chennai, this afternoon.

It'd be understandable if it was last day and he was parking the bus to hold on for a draw but its the 4th day. Surely runs are more important than blocking them out?

10 runs off 5 balls would have been more useful than 0 runs off 22 balls

McNamara That Ghost...
28-05-2012, 01:06 PM
Yeah there's little hope of him batting out another four sessions, I guess they're taught not to be reckless with another batsman out there but if a tailender can't come in and throw a bat at it, something has gone wrong.

Syn
01-06-2012, 12:16 AM
Odd. Although Tests are undoubtedly better, without a proper league system or Tests WC, the ODI WC will remain the biggest glory in cricket. And KP is all about the Hollywood. It probably wasn't wise that he made this decision on the back of an IPL schedule and straight in for tests. He's shattered right now but he might feel differently in 6 months time. There's a Twenty20 wc in September - I'm surprised that he doesn't want to play in that. But if he is genuinely focusing on his test game then good. He is incredibly talented and should be doing better than he has been. Saw him play and I knew he was going to be a star when he was at Notts, long before his england debut. Yes, I want a medal. I should be a cricket scout. I don't call them wrong. As Kohli is showing once more. If Narine destroys England I should be knighted.

Syn
01-06-2012, 02:42 PM
2013 ashes will begin at Trent bridge. And after the 5 tests are over, there will be a few months gap before England have to go to Australia to play the 2013/14 Ashes. So England and Australia have to play 10 tests against eqchother in a row. That's quite cool. In fact I think this should be a regular thing. In a four match series, play 2 tests home - quick changeover - a couple of tests away. You know it makes sense.

Dennis Bendtner
01-06-2012, 02:42 PM
England have a thing that retiring from ODIs means you aren't eligible for T20s either.

Pietersen's not been great in ODIs for a while, but they took too long to realise he should have opened the batting. Could either see him piling on the Test runs now or packing it in altogether soon enough. He's a maverick. Hope he sticks around. England's top 6 is the most boring in the history of cricket.

Syn
01-06-2012, 02:45 PM
I'm a fan of textbook tekkers but I agree you need a bit of flair. KP is probably the only batsman with a good batting style. Bell is ok. Trott, Cook and Strauss are prolific but robotic.

Dennis Bendtner
01-06-2012, 03:53 PM
Efficient and mechanical. As a great man once said, I wouldn't pay to watch them. Though I do have tickets for a day of the Lord's Test this summer so let's hope it's South Africa batting (insert England&SA banta here). Without wanting to go all Simon Cowell, KP does have the x-factor that the other boring farts lack. He will do stuff like charge a spinner for all six balls of an over rather than bail out with a leg-side nudge after three. A hundred of his will invariably contain the whole repertoire of shots. The others are the same batsman x 5, except Trott, that **** is in a league of his own.
