Syn

Good recovery by SA. If they push up to 300, it'll be below par but gives them something to bowl at. Then it'll be up to England to post a massive total, 500+, and look to win by an innings. Very possible. Just hoping the rain stays away.

307-8, Broad gor Steyn some time ago but Morkel is already on 25.

Steyn is so good. Unbelievable pacer. He's the only one around these days who gets the aggressive body-bowling right. England, normally great against the short ball, are bricking it.

Bell has a face I really want to punch, but I've become a fan in recent months. He has a lot of balls to keep grinding out these runs. Also, for my obsession with technique, he is very solid. Can't fault him.

McNamara That Ghost...
17-08-2012, 04:46 PM
Bairstow and Bell both got their 50's.

178-5 though, Bell went.

Great review from Swann, stays in after being given out - ball was going over. This umpire has had a mare, whoever he is.

McNamara That Ghost...
18-08-2012, 11:37 AM
264-8, Bairstow bowled on 95 by Morkel. Great innings for most of it but just clammed up being in the 90s.

Syn
18-08-2012, 11:41 AM
Ouch. Very impressive innings though. I was watching bits of it and he wasn't at all the villager I had expected. I guess he must've got nervous in the 90s.

Only one of the prodigies (Ganguly, Tendulkar, Dravid, Laxman) remain.

Wise choice by Laxman. You can see his reaction speeds had gone in England and Australia - same with Dravid.

India have nobody else for that no.5 position though. It'll be filled with Twenty20 villagers.

Bit of a dolly really.

Syn

De Villiers is one of the finest players of the short ball around atm. As I've mentioned many times before - I love watching him bat. They're going at 4 an over in this session. If they bat for the rest of the day, you'd have to think that's the series won.

McNamara That Ghost...
19-08-2012, 01:43 PM
Finn bowls Amla! 259-5.

McNamara That Ghost...
19-08-2012, 01:51 PM
De Villiers stays in, umpire's call means England lose the review. Worth a go.

Syn
19-08-2012, 01:55 PM
Botham's right - you shouldn't lose an appeal for that. It was a good review, just unlucky.

De Villiers has had a couple of lives so far. Hasn't looked his fluent best at all.

England bowling well now. You have to wonder why Finn didn't open with the new ball.

Syn
19-08-2012, 04:33 PM

6-2, why is Strauss leaving ones like that?!

Syn
19-08-2012, 05:12 PM
Probably hitting leg

Philander is unplayable at times though. He goes through spells like the one where Australia got bowled out for their lowest score - he sets the batsman up with one that goes straight. But the swing/speed ratio is probably more impressive than even Anderson's.

McNamara That Ghost...
19-08-2012, 05:15 PM
It doesn't help that Strauss has had multiple brainfarts for quite a long time now, wait, except for the century against the Windies which shut the critics up.

Syn
19-08-2012, 05:38 PM
England just looking to survive today, it seems.

12-2 off 10 overs.

Thought, with the big total to chase down, it's an opportunity to score quick runs off the new, hard ball.

Time to end Strauss and Cooks Test careers?

All well and good doing it v a piss poor Aussie side but they are on the up, SA are better than us and we are on the way down

Plus it solves the KP conundrum, he is better than both and most if not all would rather have him in the team than either of those 2

2 sessions to go, 6 wickets remaining

220 odd runs to get

Decent batting line up to come

England favourites imo if they play to score runs and win. The key is Trott. Play as he usually does with his 4 runs in 48 balls type style and England lose. Quicken it up, put the pressure on the South Africans and who knows.

Didn't expect that at he start of the series. I guess I should've listen to my own advice: As a great man once said, "At home, everyone is king". And the South Africans are feeling right at home in England as usual.

I'm backing India to be above England by November. India have got a couple of silly Test gimmes against New Zealand starting next week. Then it's the stupid Twenty20 tournament. And then England travel to India for 4 Tests. Cannot wait for that.

McNamara That Ghost...

Cripps_orig

Anyway i dont think England have another series for a while and they can now concentrate on the important stuff such as the T20 World Cup and retaining it.

Tests as proven by the low attendance today and the lack of interest throughout the world for the whole series for the 2 best teams is on a downward spiral with no hope of being saved.

Cripps_orig

BBC Test Match Special's Geoff Boycott
"I always get asked who are the best players around, but I think the best player of the last 20 years has been Jacques Kallis, and I don't just go on records. He keeps getting runs, wickets and catches, he plays one-day cricket just as good. The Indians don't like it when I say that as they love Sachin - he's been great, as was Lara, but Kallis has been the best."

Kallis is the best all rounder ever imo

Tendulkar is a Cricketing God though

Syn
20-08-2012, 04:21 PM
He is indeed the Jacques of all trades.

Not interested in a pissing contest - Boycott's entitled to his views, which are reasonable. It's much more physically demanding to maintain a 50 batting average over so many years and then go out and bowl pace. And Kallis' longevity in that respect is incredible.

South Africa are the only team out there that you can say victories overseas don't tell us much. Their record away is outstanding. Their Achilles heel is at home, where even Sri Lanka snuck a Test win. That is what's held them back until now from being far and away the best in the world. Two consecutive 2-0 wins in England, two consecutive series draws in India (bear in mind that India barely ever lose one Test match at home) and a comfortable series win in Australia (which, let's be honest, England have been riding off for ages). They are the best equipped to 'dominate' but still have to sort awful home form out.

McNamara That Ghost...
20-08-2012, 08:01 PM
They also play far less cricket (test matches) than the other leading nations - I can't think of too many four test series that they have.

Can't wait for South Africa vs Australia in November but again, that's only a three test series.

yeah ecb wanted him to play a game before the ODI series kicked off, and essex didnt have one so we agreed to release him, though saying that we do have a game tomorrow but guess its too close

So let me get this straight

A Gloucestershire player who has probably been looking forward to playing SA all summer has had to step aside cos Boparas county didnt have a game and ECB demnded they put him in for Gloucester? What if they had said no?

Wtf is this? If Bopara isnt match fit then he shouldnt have been picked for the ODI squad. Its part and parcel of sport. You cant just go play for any other team to get fit.

one reason is that while it was an ecb request as far as i know, glos were short on players i believe so wanted it anyway.

plus its happened before, strauss played for somerset last year because middlesex didnt ahve any 4 days game before the test series. basically we jsut loaned bopara to glos for the day, nothing wrong with that, happens in all sports. if it was called a loan then there is no problem. though i really dont think bopara is match ready yet, not many people at essex seemed conviced on sunday either though no one knows why he had a break

Its not rocket science how to get Strauss out tbh

Just bowl at him

Strauss has been shit for a while now and he'll eventually get out or he'll just block and leave which is even worse for England. His centuries against a piss poor WI side convinced no one.

I've turned into a right fanboy. I stopped watching when Kohli got out. But after watching the highlights on Sky at 7:30, I think it's safe to say it was a nice innings from Pujara. Seems to have a very unique style but that doesn't mean it's poor. He likes to get on top of the ball and had good composure in the final third. Just needs to sort his finishing out and he could get between 20-25 goals this season. All depends on his fitness too though.

Also need to sell Gambhir/Sehwag and get Rahane in.
