Pitch is cutting up. India owe it to Virinder Shitwag for cashing in in the morning.

All fat jokes aside, agreed. He's played some brilliant innings, maybe the only one who could score multiple doubles and triples at more than a run a ball. Today he deserves his dues because most openers would have been content to play themselves in to cash in later, but he scored from the off. He's just annoying. Outside Asia he'll turn into Afridi and chuck his bat at everything costing India a good start.

He's also fat.

You need a different skillset to succeed in England, New Zealand, South Africa etc which he doesn't have. That's leveled out his average. Overall I'd still have him in an XI of the last ten years for his unique exploits.

Final day tomorrow and the pitch has flattened out. England 10 runs ahead with five in the shed (I didn't intend this to be a rap). Prior playing another great innings. India certainly need early wickets tomorrow - barring a period nearing stumps today, the bowling did not cause too many problems. I suspect Cook won't be making a reckless maverick declaration after lunch, but bat long enough...

The bad news for England is Gambhir will not bat.

Yeah I've turned on him too. He's the new Wenger.

His reaction speeds are shot. A no.4 (IMO the easiest position to score) has to average 70+ in a series in India. Tendulkar won't get close and even if he gets a ton in the series or a couple of 50's, the team would've been better off with shit like Raina in because even he could get big runs in India.

Monty takes 4. Indians below par at 266/6. Although the wicket does look more difficult, sometimes it completely evens out the next day. There's little consistency. Panesar took 4 wickets and had India down to 169-6 but Ashwin got 50 and Pujara gets another 100. He has scored 361 runs in the series without being out. His overall Test average atm is 85.5

for the next few years at least, cook and kp im sure will trade places at the top of the centuary list. who do you think is better?

for me, its cook without a shadow of a doubt, kp is a fantastic batsman, and in odi's and t20 is miles ahead of cook but in tests, cook has to face the new ball everytime and yet still scores runs, its slightly easier in times like today coming in against a side that bowled for over a day and with an old ball, but the thing that swings it for me, is cook is the ultimate team player, personal milestones mean nothing, its always always about the team, whereas kp has been guilty of trying to get headlines and getting out, trying to get that centuary with a six and skying it etc. i think in tests, cook is the better batsman, and the greatest english batsman

Syn
07-12-2012, 01:21 PM
Cook's great. Cook, Amla and Clarke are the top 3 in the world. If he carries on at this rate he will of course break all kinds of records but longevity is, in itself, a rare quality.

Between Cook and KP, different styles. Cook is all about the textbook whereas Pietersen relies on his natural ability to make it up as he goes along. I find Pietersen far more entertaining and stylish as a shotmaker but Cook is an overall better batsman for sure.

Cook is more consistent and will end up with the better records. Pietersen plays innings that few others are capable of.

You have to be fair, Cook has cashed in quite a lot against average bowling. Whereas we've seen Pietersen hit the likes of McGrath and Warne. But he doesn't have the consistency to do that every innings and his series' have largely been one or two brilliant knocks in the middle of several low scores.

cook has too, he has a centuary in Australia against them, and of course you cant forget his scores in the last ashes albeit against a much worse attack. im pretty sure he has a centuary agaisnt every opposition he has played, and both home and away. im certain he has one in south africa, he got one this year too, he has done it in india, both on his debut and now. i think sri lanka and new zealand are the only two places i can think of where he hasnt scored a ton in.

It's not so much a slight on Cook as a recognition of Pietersen's ability to occasionally play phenomenal innings that few others can, sometimes against the better bowlers. Colombo and his hundred against South Africa would be this year's examples. He just sandwiches those between loads of rubbish scores. In that respect he has a higher ceiling than Cook, but Cook has scored big most of the time. They were both utter lemons against Ajmal and friends so that's not worth pursuing. I don't recall Cook doing very well against Steyn, Philander and Morkel this year.

Generally I think it's too simplistic to narrow it down to scoring against/in this country or that country. A century in India is barely an achievement these days and the last Ashes was simply the beatdown of some absolute jokers. Quality of bowler has to be the first barometer.

cook got a ton against south africa this year too :good:

pietersen can play innings that no one else can, he is a joy to watch when he is in that kind of form, he can take apart a bowling attack in a blink of an eye and be destructive that way. i love watching KP as much as i love watching cook, both are two different styles that i love watching.

i think with cook is you expect him to do well, and he can take apart a bowling attack by just being stubborn, concentration 100% and just taking each ball at a time making the bowlers work harder, tire them and punish all bad balls while not offering them any hope. that his style of destruction compared to kps. since the ashes in 2010. cook has taken to scoring big hundreds rather then before where he would between 100-130, now when he gets a hundred most of the time he will get past 150.

one difference i find, is when both are out of form, cook can still get a score, it might not be a ton but can get above 50, kp cant when he is out form. against ajmal this year, cook did get at least one 50, i dont think kp did. i might be wrong.

1) Yeah that's the point I was making about Pietersen. The ability to do that - not only score, but the manner of scoring - against the better bowlers is a significant marker for overall ability.

2) I agree there. Pietersen is comedy gold when out of form.

England were excellent. Lost important tosses 3 times in the 4 games but were still comfortably the better team. India are a shambles at the moment - there's a lot of corruption around selection. I would say 7 of the 11 players have no business playing at the highest level. And there are young players like Rahane who aren't getting a fair chance even though they're a lot better than most seniors.

Watched the second day of the Australia v Sri Lanka test yesterday. Had great seats and a fantastic day with my brother's buddies. The MCG is one impressive stadium. SL were poor and looked like they had just given up, but it was a great experience all the same. Saw a great bit of fielding with a wonderful catch for the seventh or eighth wicket

Somewhat less impressive was the Royal Hotel bar we went to across from the MCG. Once I'd gone for a squirt, walking gingerly across the washroom floor, I refused to drink anything other than bottled beer.

Obviously there's a big drop-off in quality compared to what we're used to. These Indian and Australian teams have to be their worst for quite a long time. But it's still early days in the series. We're yet to see Australia bowl. They've added in two new bowlers and they'll look to counter with spin of their own - much like England did by calling up Panesar after losing the first test.

I don't think it'll be easy for India in this match. The outfield's quick but it was a horrific pitch for day 1. Even Harbhajan was getting it to turn.
