Why would you have a pitch that actually gets better to bat on by day 5?

That's not because of England's first innings score. most of that was inexplicable chucking away of wickets.

I think we all know that these are average batsmen having a good day (well, very good) but I wonder if this stat alone will prompt Sehwag to drop the paratha and finally admit his shitness. Or Gambhir. Probably not.

So much shit in the commentary box ,bigging up these IPL cowards. Best debut of all time, the birth of a superstar etc....he's an average player. I woke up at 6am and watched his innings after that. Did you see the bowling? It was, by far, the shittest display of bowling I have seen. Half-volleys would've been relatively good, they were feeding them high full-tosses outside off stump. And on the odd occasion they did pitch it right, the beauty of the Indian pitch would take over, slow everything right down and give it a tennis ball bounce that sits up nicely.

The fact that Gambhir and Sehwag weren't getting runs in these conditions shows a complete lack of professionalism. We know they're capable because at some point they have managed to get runs in some very difficult conditions - in SA, Australia, England wherever. Maybe age has caught up with them and they no longer want it.

There was a question tweeted in to Gavaskar. "How will Vijay and Dhawan handle SA conditions in the next tour?", and the answer of 'well lets just enjoy this' was far too kind. They'll be back in the pavilion probably before the 10th over.

Dennis Bendtner
16-03-2013, 03:59 PM
I saw some of it but mostly later on. As always with India on a high there is a complete lack of context. It's a shame that Shastri and Gavaskar are all too happy to toe that line. The concerns are completely legitimate yet winning with specialist home players on tailored pitches is meant to be the answer to everything.

Gambhir has been getting out the same way for about three years. I think Sehwag is probably done. You are too kind in giving Vijay and Dhawan 10 overs.

Very exciting last day ahead. India somehow collapsed and Aziz was denied a certain century because he ran out of partners. But then the trundler (the new praveen kumar) took 3 wickets to leave Australia 75-3. Australia now 14 or so behind. Clarke will be key - if India get him quickly then they've got a great chance.

Currywash achieved. Indians back on track at home (actually, don't think I've seen a currywash previously, so credit due for that). It's not quite one to be jumping for joy about. Good to see Pujara continue to stack up the runs and Ashwin improving. But it is a crack-papering job. You can't expect to remove any assistance for the new ball bowlers and expect it not to be. These turning pitches make for better spectacles than the usual Indian fare of flat tracks and attritional Test matches, and credit to India for clinically sweeping Australia aside on them. But it'll catch up with them soon. The batsmen will be completely out of practice against lateral movement and the likes of Ishant Sharma will continue to be useless passengers only there because everyone forgot about him. I would have confidence in Pujara, Yadav, Kohli etc. to perform overseas but the rest carry obvious question marks.

Yup. The trophy belongs to the groundsmen for expertly biasing games. That said, Australia won the toss and batted first all 4 times so you'd think that would even it out a bit. India tried the same thing against England but England just turned up with some better spinners and cleaned up. But definitely some improvement from India - particularly the openers...they usually got India off to a good start. I think Ashwin belongs in that list of players likely to perform away...if not with the ball, his batting average is pretty good. A promising start for trundler Kumar's son. If he can get it to swing so much in those conditions, he might do pretty well. He can bat a bit too.

India aren't playing another test until around November I think - when they're going to SA ( :haha: ). A bit ridiculous and annoying if Tendulkar is still around for that. He's clearly past it and he's occupying the ideal no.4 position. Need to try Chand (aka new Kohli) after his U19 WC heroics.

Dennis Bendtner
24-03-2013, 03:03 PM
It is hilarious how these Kumars who swing it miles keep appearing. BK showed some skill with the new ball but it's early days. If Ashwin is the sole spinner then the least he has to do is sustain pressure when bowling overseas.

Australia were terrible.

The problem with Tendulkar is that he is genuinely the worst-performing batsman in the team. You could make a case for him sticking around on 'experience' grounds if he was say, the fourth best batsman. And given the debacles on the last two away tours that doesn't look like getting any better in November. There was some talk about him waving goodbye to the crowd or some bollocks today so who knows.

Cripps_orig
24-03-2013, 11:31 PM
Why? There is literally no excitement left in Tests. No close finishes, 5 days of blocks and leaves and matches ending in a draw, crowds feel they are wasting their money so no one goes.

It's so far behind ODIs and T20s in terms of excitement, skill, etc etc

They need to change something. Having limited overs for each innings would be a start. Means batsmen would have to score quick and for the team rather than take 300 balls to score 40 runs and just be interested in their averages. Looking at Trott here.

I mean there are back to back Ashes series coming up for the first time in long time if not ever yet there is no interest in it. Aussies see winning in India as their holy grail these days.

The earlier game was good. See, IPL wouldn't be so annoying if it were shorter and didn't have these bullshit sponsorships and bullshit sellout commentators having to bullshit the bullshit product. Yeah. What an embarrassment. The son of one of the world's richest men, and he looks like that. Surely the family must have some PR telling him to lose 20 stone. He's obviously never heard the word 'no' in his life. This sort of attitude won't help the rape problem in India.

That is gold. Two needed off the last ball. RP Singh bowls it, Jadeja hits it in the air and straight down the fielder's throat. But it's a no-ball. And they ran a single so they win. A no-ball off the last ball in that situation. Another legendary Indian death bowler. IPL is hilarious.

doubt there is anything to it, but that has got to be suspicious, seen enough county cricketers and journalists all voicing their doubts about it and apparently the betting markets were doing strange things

tbh it wouldnt surprise me if it was fixed, and its shame that cricket has got to this stage where results, catches, no balls etc are looked at with doubt rather then taken as a mistake etc

Can't blame people for being suspicious, though I haven't heard anything about the betting markets. My first reaction was just to laugh because RP Singh is a clown. If you read an Indian forum I browse sometimes, you'll see all sorts of conspiracy theories constantly discussed concerning many of the protagonists in this episode which made it funny. But it was a big no-ball when the absolute imperative was not to bowl a no-ball so suspicion is fair. Most of the international players earn a lot of money through IPL, though, particularly the Indians.

If there are big scores in the IPL people complain that it's just mindless slogging and not real cricket etc. When there are low scores the complaints are that it's boring. Yes the IPL may affect the scheduling of the English county season and it may inconvenience teams because some players want to play in the IPL instead of the early part of the County season, but even so the hatred and bile that English cricket fans aim at the tournament is a bit embarrassing (I'm not taking about anyone on this forum btw). After all, there are T20 competitions all over the world, yet I don't see the same scorn poured on those tournaments.

Agree. Very simplistic ollie. Several games right here at the Chinnaswamy on a Saturday night sponsored by Pepsi have gone to a 'super over' or to the last few balls because teams are making a good fist of defending low totals. There are better arguments than lack of entertainment to put forward.
