Evra wasn't enthusiastic about shaking hands, but you can't blame him given he's having to shake hands with someone who racially abused him. Anyway, if anyone could be excused not shaking hands it would be Evra. He was after-all the victim in this whole case, not Suarez. I've seen the clip again, and Evra does look like he's extended his hand and Suarez deliberately ignores it. With Rio you can see him actively looking to shake his hand, but Ferdinand ignores it, but with Evra he simply moves onto the next guy in line (De Gea)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u__SQfaf6H8&feature=player_embedded

I'm not a fan of Evra, but he's done nothing wrong throughout this episode IMO.

I don't have a problem with him not being enthusiastic about it. Suarez obviously wasn't either. I'm really not on board with all the moralists who place so much importance on that handshake. But afterwards, I think Evra was sly in portraying that he was in fact adamant on shaking Suarez's hand - with the arm grab - just to stir the pot. I thought it was very opportunist. Now he's emerging as some dignified hero.

dazthegooner
12-02-2012, 12:10 PM
tbh Suarez did nothing wrong if he didn't want to shake his hand he doesn't have to if anything Evra should be charged with assulting him by grabbing his arm ;)

McNamara That Ghost...
12-02-2012, 12:42 PM
I'm not sure he was though neither of them particularly ingratiated themselves by the end. Sure you don't have to shake somebody's hand if you don't want but the suggestion was that Suarez had said (I am guessing privately) that he would. Kenny got a bit confused in what he was saying post match though, probably through anger towards Geoff Shreeves. I think he thought Suarez was going to but didn't know that he actually hadn't, Suarez may have acted the bigger See You Next Tuesday because it's possible he acted against the wishes of his club.

12-02-2012, 12:54 PM
dont think evra was taht wrong in celebrating, it didnt help but he had been to anfield and booed the whole time, had more racism thrown at him during that game (monkey impressions etc) booed the whole time and has liverpool going on about how suraez is victim and yet to recieve an apologly, yes he shouldnt have celebrated but in the circumstances its understandable. not right of course but you can see why.

They're both childish and pathetic. Evra was given the opportunity to react as he did and for that reason Suarez is an idiot. Frankly all the talk about the body language of who dropped their hand (of which I am guilty of as well) is clutching at straws and isn't helping things either.

What's worse though is the media reaction. It's been blown out of all proportion, whilst simultaneously covering over many, much worse, actions of ex and currant-United players.

Making this ridiculous handshake circus compulsory does nothing to promote respect. It only gets airtime when the players don't get on, like yesterday. Normally they're quick enough to go to the adverts, or a chance to show the teams.

handshake being comulsory as you say doesnt promote respect i get that. the question i have though is why did the fa cancel john terrys handshake and not this one? surely its both or none at all. no one covered themselves in glory but liverpool have been the worst throughout the whole affair, t shirts, statements etc. all could have been solved if first statement was we wont comment until we have report/evidence etc

It does seem contradictory they're saying "a line could've been drawn under it" yet are frothing at every opportunity of asking whoever they can about it. I mean, even on Sky's programme today they talked about the hullabaloo from yesterday before they talked about the game they are screening.

Evra was the bigger **** in all of this. Hope he's having sky diving lessons when Ramsey scores next.

How was he the bigger ****? He was the one who was racially abused by Suarez, and then got a lot of abuse at Anfield and had a fan make a money gesture at him. However, he got on with the game and didn't react. And anyway, why should Suarez have such an issue with shaking Evra's hand? He's not the victim in this, Evra is. If Evra didn't want to shake Suarez's hand, I'd bet people would be up in arms and claiming Evra's playing the race card and should man up and get on with the game.

This is not meant to be slur on Liverpool FC, as I have no problem with club or it's supporters at all. Looking back at the celebration of Evra, yes perhaps he was a bit OTT, but how Evra can be seen as having behaved worse is bizarre.

And it seems that Suarez had told Liverpool he would shake Evra's hand, so he's let the club down in that regard as well.

Evra was the bigger **** in all of this. Hope he's having sky diving lessons when Ramsey scores next.

We all know Evra is a ****, but Luiz who has been a prick since the world cup, showed once again how classess he really is and liverpool have no choice but to sell him for the sake of the clubs reputaion.

He agreed with his manager he shake hands and he never done it letting kenny down and LPFC down.

handshake being comulsory as you say doesnt promote respect i get that. the question i have though is why did the fa cancel john terrys handshake and not this one? surely its both or none at all. no one covered themselves in glory but liverpool have been the worst throughout the whole affair, t shirts, statements etc. all could have been solved if first statement was we wont comment until we have report/evidence etc
Our PR team should be flogged and sacked there's no doubt about it. But you're right, it should have been cancelled yesterday. And altogether.

Maccy: Hypocrisy in the media? Surely not.

Joker: I'll hazard a guess that privately the club are disappointed with Suarez. Whether he wanted to or not, frankly I don't care. Anyone could predict the furore if he didn't do it. Edit: Actually I wasn't aware of that interview in the Telegraph; Suarez has made him look a bit foolish.

Either way, he'll be gone in the summer.

Should more be made of Rio Ferdinand not shaking Suarez' hand?

Since when did he become such an activist? Could not shaking hands with the Uruguayan also incite a riot? It seems it was a pre-meditated snub as well. My reasoning behind this is that he had such a short space of time to think (and I'm not actually sure Rio thinks at all) between Suarez not shaking hands with Evra and making an informed decision to withdraw his own hand.

He's a prat.

It smooths relations, though. In my opinion, he's taking a really unnecessary "holier than thou" stance on hand-shaking. First Terry and now Suarez.

Like I say, it would've been really interesting to see how it would've panned out had Suarez shaken hands with Evra. Turdinand, I'm guessing, still wouldn't have offered his hand to Suarez, but I'm sure he wouldn't have got anywhere near the same backlash.

I just don't think so. And, again, I'm second-guessing the actions of a moronic footballer who believes Twitter to be the pinnacle of social convention, but I think he's incapable of making such a split second decision. It was oly De Gea separating him and Evra in the line-up, after all.

Suarez deserves the flak given that assurance to Dalglish beforehand. Fair enough. Personally I still find the handshake a trivial thing that should be left to the players, but obviously Suarez didn't help his club at all. I still find the opportunism of Evra afterwards distasteful (and typical of him, I guess). I'd say he knew he was on a win-win.

Well he wouldn't have got the same 'backlash' because he wasn't the one found guilty of racially abusing another player - the onus is on Suarez to show contrition, especially when his club is under the impression that he would. If you're right about Rio not thinking about things too much then it's entirely possible withdrawing his hand was a snap reaction to what he saw.

This.

I didn't realise Dalglish had come out and said he would do it; he's made him look like an idiot. I still think Evra was just as childish, knew he would get away with any reaction and the media reaction is over the top, but the whole thing is so inevitable it's just as annoying as anything else. And once again we as a club look foolish.

We're kinda singing off the same hymn sheet here. He wouldn't have got the same backlash, mainly to do with the fact that it was only about Luis Suarez, Pat Rice Evra and the underlying race row. That we can agree on.

It's just that by snubbing Suarez, Ferdinand made himself an attention-seeker, made himself part of the story and was suddenly considered one of the pre-match handshake 'protagonists'. He could've done a little more to defuse the situation, but that's just me, I suppose.

Liverpool Managing Director Ian Ayre has today released the following statement.

"We are extremely disappointed Luis Suarez did not shake hands with Patrice Evra before yesterday's game. The player had told us beforehand that he would, but then chose not to do so.

"He was wrong to mislead us and wrong not to offer his hand to Patrice Evra. He has not only let himself down, but also Kenny Dalglish, his teammates and the Club. It has been made absolutely clear to Luis Suarez that his behaviour was not acceptable.

"Luis Suarez has now apologised for his actions which was the right thing to do. However, all of us have a duty to behave in a responsible manner and we hope that he now understands what is expected of anyone representing Liverpool Football Club."

MANCHESTER UNITED'S tunnel bust-up with Liverpool on Saturday was sparked by a spitting storm.

United keeper David De Gea was spat at as he walked to the Old Trafford dressing room at half-time.

Players from both sides had to be parted by stewards as the explosive confrontation threatened to escalate into a full-on brawl.

Police became involved in an effort to calm tensions and keep the feuding sides apart following an explosive first 45 minutes, which saw Luis Suarez refuse to shake the hand of Patrice Evra before kick-off.

It is unclear who was responsible for the spitting but a source said: "De Gea was making his way to the tunnel and was clearly shocked to be spat at.

"Obviously the players reacted angrily and both teams became involved, before stewards managed to quieten it down."

Tempers were frayed again at the end of United's 2-1 victory when Liverpool substitute Craig Bellamy got involved in a confrontation with the Old Trafford head of security as players left the pitch.
