a much calmer second half and also partly due to the arteta incident killing the speed of the game.

good all round defending today, both teams looked tired in the second half with liverpool suffering more.

rvp is having all his missed seasons in one so far. amazing.

We were pretty average and rode our luck at times.

RvP another Arsenal legend. . .
Sir Ches. . .great game

Our passing was shit and thr energy level was flat but we got the win and that what matters. . .I hope we can carry this through till the end of the season. . .

I pray that RvP sees potential in a team with the likes of Jack and Oxo

Looking for ManU to do us a favour. . .win will see us 4 points behind Spuds. . .would love to see us end up above them

It's just the value of having a top goalkeeper and a top striker. They can win you games.

Wins feel better when you don't dominate the game tbh. Or at least they do for me.

Yes it was a late goal, but as usual we didn't do enough to score, you did. Few clear chances, 2 goals. Name of the game, no point having the ball as much as we did (13 corners FFS!) and doing nothing with it.

Yeah I think so too. RVP is so crucial to the team and without him we'd really be struggling. I'm just enjoying watching him in an Arsenal shirt because I don't think he'll be here next season, he can literally choose where he wants to go. I think he'll end up at Barca or Real.

Yup. Usual football matches only last for 82 minutes.

Arteta and others were dead for ages so no football was being played. It's not the minutes added on that make it lucky. And we scored early in injury time not in the 98th minute, in any case. It's the Kuyt hitting the post and how close Liverpool were getting that maybe made it lucky. I think it was a game that could've gone either way. It wasn't undeserved but things just went our way this time. When we played them at the Emirates earlier on, things went their way.

There may have been contact but it doesn't mean it wasn't a dive. He was diving into contact - he had no intention of continuing his run, he wanted to force contact and it has become the new, acceptable way of winning penalties these days. If there's a 50/50 challenge, and you kick the opponent, there is contact. It doesn't mean you deserve the free-kick.

In the last couple of games - massive games - we have had to comeback from bad decisions. Fair play to the lads for just getting on with it.

I think it's time the rules about how fouls are given in the pelanty area were changed. If Suarez was touched, it's so minimal that's it would be hard to consider it a foul, especially as yet again a player has made sure there is no chance at all of him trying to score a goal, much like the Bale one.

Played like a mong for much of the game but came up with a touch of class when we needed it.

RVP gave him a good shout out in the interview and kissed his boot for that pass. An underrated passer. He did it last week for Theo as well. As Robin said, he has the vision to see the movement and also the skill to execute the pass. If he was European, he'd have been pushed up and encouraged to play a more attacking role as seen with Gerrard and Ballack.

It's not just the highlight reel passes either, he's often good at keeping possession and making the smart pass but he's also having to curb his attack to cover gaps and other players that can't pass gas. Arteta and Ramsey especially. When under pressure, the lose the ball or play a leg breakers. Arteta especially. Even when he has time on the ball he he can play leg breakers or lose possession. Rosicky is a much neater player than both of them, but he doesn't go for high risk passes. Hardly ever attempts a cutting through ball and that's his flaw. Alex just goes for it and it's why he gets so many assists.

a much calmer second half and also partly due to the arteta incident killing the speed of the game.

good all round defending today, both teams looked tired in the second half with liverpool suffering more.

rvp is having all his missed seasons in one so far. amazing.

Good all round defending???Were you watching the same game.Good defenders not being coached how to defend as a unit.If liverpool had been a little more clinical in front of goal they would of been out of site.Sometimes when i watch our fullbacks bombing forward exposing out 2 centre halfs ,i wonder who ,if anyone is coaching the defense. It is the reason why we are out of europe at the first sign of playing anyone decent.

Arsene Wenger admitted Arsenal cannot afford to lose Robin van Persie after watching the Dutchman's heroics earn a 2-1 win at Liverpool on Saturday lunchtime.

Van Persie scored twice, including a late winner to take his tally for the season to 35 in all competitions for club and country, as the Gunners battled back from going behind to Laurent Koscielny's own goal.

The victory put Arsenal within four points of third-placed Tottenham and as good as ended Liverpool's top-four hopes in the Premier League.

And after the match, Wenger confessed the Gunners would miss inspirational striker and captain Van Persie, whose contract is set to expire at the end of next season and he has been linked with Real Madrid.

"In the second half, I thought if it stayed 1-1 until the last 10 minutes, you never know, we have the quality to create chances," Wenger told Sky Sports 2 HD.

"In the second half, we had chances, the problem was the first half when we were not in the game.

Special

"We were fortunate it was 1-0 at half-time, because we could have been two or three down.

"But when you see the ball landing at the feet of Van Persie, you know he can deliver a special goal. He did that today.

"You can never afford to lose a player of that quality. In every game he comes up with something special."

Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny made a magnificent double save from Dirk Kuyt's penalty when the score was 0-0 and Wenger was full of praise for the Pole's display.

"There were two men of the match today, Wojciech Szczesny and Van Persie," he said.

Wenger added: "It (the win) keeps the confidence high and we are on a good run now. It puts us in good condition to make the impossible possible on Tuesday night (against AC Milan in the Champions League)."

on what the victory means…

It was vital for us to win the game. Liverpool had a very good first half and we were not in the game - what was flattering for us was to be 1-1 at half time. The second half was much more level. We had some good chances as well, they had maybe one from Martin Kelly. But they had no clear-cut chances in the second half. They had to win the game, and we know that we have Van Persie who can deliver something special. Overall it was not one of our best games, but we refused to give in and we played as well as we could. Our goalkeeper and centre forward made the difference.

on playing better in the second half…

I don't know why. It is down to the quality of Liverpool [in the first half] and everybody was away the whole week [on international duty]. Song came back on Friday morning, Gervinho and Benayoun as well. Liverpool played with a rhythm and pace above us in the first half and our fluency was not there at all, we gave them too much room. But as long as you are not killed off in the Premier League, you always have a chance as every team has quality strikers to score goals.

on Wojciech Szczesny's performance…

It is good that he had a performance like that, because he had a little bit of a difficult period in January. He has shown his potential and I like that he was brave as well. He had a lot of kicking to do and a lot of coming out to do, and he didn't make a mistake. At 21 years old he is a great talent, he is learning his job but because he is a great talent, he learns quickly.

on Robin van Persie's value…

I must say we will do anything to keep him. I cannot say much more because I have said that many times. I am very proud that he has grown after having seen him arriving here timid, and today being the player and leader he has become. He is playing under big pressure in every game because he knows he has to score. He has shown exceptional development, not only as a player but as a human being. He is up there with the best players in the world.

on Mikel Arteta's injury…

As I sit here now, he is in hospital at the moment and we have no news.

on Abou Diaby…

The bad news of the day is that Diaby is injured and did his hamstring. Benayoun has a small hamstring problem, Gibbs has a problem. We look decimated after the game. I don't know who will be available on Tuesday night. Maybe I will play with six strikers as we have to score goals!

on Liverpool's penalty…

I wasn't happy but then I have been told it was a penalty on television. I haven't seen it yet. [The follow-up save from Kuyt's penalty] was the save of the game from Wojciech.

on trying to catch Tottenham…

I always said the target this season was to be in the top four. Mathematically it is possible, but let's go step by step and see what happens. When you see that Liverpool - who I believe are a very, very good team - are seventh in the league, it shows how difficult it is in this league, how big the battle is for the top four and how each game can change very quickly.

Sometimes bad finishing can be attributed to bad luck at least, Kuyt's effort was horribly unlucky with the way it spun away and onto the post. What I thought was more concerning for you was the amount of times you got into promising areas but no one had the presence of mind to play a killer ball. Downing was clean through on the wing and only had to play the most simple FIFA X pass to Suarez who would have scored, instead he passed it right to Chesney. The worst was when Adam had Henderson in acres on his own but thought he was Messi and took everyone on.

Stewart Drowning was a more farcical buy than Carroll. At least they had time to think. An insipid player. If they had someone better out there making a material contribution, they would immediately be better off.

The problem with Charlie Average is he thinks he is Xavi.

Kuyt's chance was difficult, granted. But Rosicky had a similar chance the other week and scored. Fine margins. But when we're having several clear chances every single match, something is wrong. Composure, technique, whatever it is we don't have it. There comes a time you stop blaming the woodwork, divine intervention and looks introspectively.

Syn
04-03-2012, 12:49 PM
I'm with today's goalscorer - the problem is coming from out wide. Kuyt is not a serious footballer. Handy player to have in the squad though IMO. But he should not be a regular in the line-up. And Downing is not good enough. But because of the way Liverpool want to play - which is nothing like us - they want to attack from out wide, they need to make sure they have better options in those positions. Bellamy is a good option but he is not going to stay at this level for long. It seems he can't play every week as it is.

Adam in the first half of the season was actually OK; I think he was involved in more of our goals (all 4 of them) than anyone else. But since then he has been utterly dreadful. Didn't want him in the first place, then tried to rationalise it (set pieces, decent left foot), then it sorta worked for a while, and now he wouldn't get into the reserves. Downing has been OK when he runs at the defence, but you could probably count the number of times he's done that using your hands.

No one outside of our defence has played to a consistent level which is why it was inevitable what would happen yesterday.

The two of them lack real quality. Looking at stats when they're a big fish in a small pond doesn't really help, but I think that formed most of Liverpool's rationale for signing them. Adam's set-pieces aren't much cop. Drowning really showed his peak level at Villa. It was truly inexcusable spending that much money on a known quantity 27 year old with little scope for improvement. You would take a more optimistic view of Liverpool's signings if a guy with genuine ability and room for improvement was bought instead. Even considering the Carroll buy.

Big fish thing aside, I don't get how there can be such a dramatic difference, even with the simple thing like making a 5 yard pass or taking a corner.

But yes, hopefully it's a bit of a wake up for transfer policy.

Where is Maxi Rodriguez, Ngibbles? Can't remember if he was a sub yesterday. He would be a fairly good step forward.

He was, for the first time in ages I think

It is an odd one; maybe there's something behind the scenes; Kenny did mention certain players' attitudes weren't right. But he is one of the most inconsistent players ever, much like Yossi. He does seem to be one of the few on Suarez's wavelength though.

That's what I mean. I can't say I've seen many of his Liverpool games, but he is definitely a smart player. I don't see Downing shitting out a quality hat-trick like he did against Fulham (?). I would have thought for next season a more imaginative transfer policy would be needed, though.

Hate games like this, they fray the nerves. We were shit and didnt deserve a point but as we won i have to say

Scummerpool :pal:

£35mil for Andy Carroll who gets 3 minutes at the end? Sloth couldn't hit a Kardashian ass with a Ashley Banjo tbf and Suarez seems to have some bizarre condition whereby he feels pain in his shins no matter where he gets kicked??

We couldnt defend, couldnt pass, couldnt attack, the midfield were awful, we had no work ethic, no closing down or tracking back, the wide players were woeful, the substitutions were too late, aside from Diaby who made us far better when he came on and when he went off

But we won...again? God only know how much RvP should be worth now

Again I actually thought we defended ok. It wasn't brilliant by any means but it was enough to see out a win.

We could've lost by 4 or 5 if it wasn't for some competent defending.

Really? I thought it was the goalies long arms and the thickness of a post that stopped it being a route

They had 13 corners that were all dealt with, not just by sir Chesney either.

MIKEL ARTETA has written an open letter to Liverpool to thank the club and their fans for their support after his Anfield injury scare.

The Arsenal midfielder was carried off on a stretcher in the 2-1 away win following an accidental clash with Jordan Henderson off the ball.

But despite being given the all-clear since — bar a week's rest which will see him miss the Champions League clash with AC Milan — the Spaniard wanted to express his gratitude to all those that assisted in his treatment.

The former Everton star wrote: "I just want to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their help and friendship towards me on Saturday.

"After my accident on the pitch, the Arsenal medical staff did a great job, together with everyone at Liverpool Football Club.

"From Anfield, I was taken straight to the Aintree University Hospital, where they checked me, just as precaution.

"Everything was fine and I was able to travel from the hospital and join up with my teammates for the train journey back to London.

"I've since looked back at the TV images of when I was being taken off and just want to show my appreciation to the Liverpool fans at Anfield.

"It is touching to receive that response from the fans of a great club when I am leaving the pitch injured. Thank you.

"I also want to thank Pepe Reina and the Liverpool players who have sent me messages of support and friendship, this again is really touching and just shows class from a great football club.

"And very importantly, a message to all the fantastic Arsenal fans, not only all those at Anfield on Saturday who were brilliant, but also those who have sent me many messages since Saturday.

"It is hugely appreciated. I cannot tell you how much this means to me.

"It must have looked very serious to everyone as I left the pitch on a stretcher, but I'm pleased to say that I'm fine now and hope to be back on the pitch very soon.

"Thank you everyone.

"Mikel Arteta"

This match was something of a role reversal for us.

This season it has usually been us who dominate possession, crack off a load of shots and fail to score. Then we let the opposition score with pretty much their first and only shot.

Man Utd did much the same thing to Tottingham yesterday, soaked up pressure, then when they got a chance, took it. Utd are much more capable of it than us, they have more goalscorers in their team than we do, and a better defensive shape.

So yeah, Kenny can talk all he wants about not getting what you deserve. You deserve what you can take, and his team don't take the chances they create. 30 league goals a season tells it's own story.

The fact is that 2 moments of quality won it, Sagna cross, Song looped pass, and of course the finishing. Luck? Nah. We outqualitied them.
