Fourth is the new first. The Arsenal accountants worked out some time ago that financially it is better for the club to finish fourth than first. It provides exactly the same route to the Champions League riches (indeed, add in the qualifying round and it is actually worth more) while being attainable for something like 12 points less (last season), or 16 (the year before), and this year it could feasibly stretch to 20 points or more. Each of those points, judged against the gold standard of Chelsea, now Manchester City, costs an awful lot of money. Why on earth would you spend it if you didn’t have to?

Championship titles are for inferiority complexes and the fledgling (northerners in other words). Think about it: Fergie and the chip on his shoulder; City and their history of under-achievement. Mature, successful businesses have no need of the glitz and glamour of trophies. Not when there is a bottom line to think about. Without us realising it Arsenal have actually been the most successful club in the country for the past 7 years – unencumbered by any psychological weakness about the need for baubles, fortified and robust on the balance sheet as a direct result. It is pleasing therefore that they have managed to check their present run before it got seriously out of hand and the worrying prospect of finishing third loomed. With a little touch on the “handbrake” fourth (first) will be ours again, and the rest of them can read it and weep.

It may have been said in a mocking way (i dont know, the post was too long to read) but there is an element of truth in it

If we are out of the top 4, we go all out to get back in to it

If we are already in it, the club seems disinterested in where we finish of those 4 places as long as we do.

Wenger has already said 4th is more important than CC and FA trophys and we arent good enough to win the league or CL.

We arent winning a trophy for some while, my friends.

I wouldn't mind a bet that we'll finish 4th for the next 10 years. When you set out with that as you first objective, it shouldn't be any surprise it's what you get.

Every time we look like coming 3rd we lose, or 5th and we win.

The way we finished last season looked like someone at the club had a few quid on us coming 4th.

You do wonder if 4th place was taken away, what would Wenger do?

Would he try that extra harder to get top 3 or go on as he is and not give a fuck?

every season i pray uefa change the rules and take away a champions league spot from england.

maybe then we'll buck up our fucking ideas and do something meaningful.

Patience is a sign of intelligence don't you know, and don't forget we are running on semen, not petrol because the evil Arabs actually want to win something, rather than knowing their place and bowing down to the superior European/American "prudent" businessman
