New direction for the Thor movies but the new approach made it really enjoyable. One of the best movies for sure but Marvel is doing well to keep things fresh.

Huge disparity between critic reviews and user reviews on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. A high score on IMBD but the movie is getting savaged on the written user reviews.

17-12-2017, 03:25 PM
Great performance from Mark Hamill but I find it hard to believe he'd give up so easily on young Ben Solo and even contemplate murdering the kid in his sleep. Even for split second as he claimed. Luke witnessed the madness of Darth Vader first hand.(sorry). Vader was committed to mass murder and fully submitted himself to the dark side. Luke still had hope for Vader, didn't give up on him and rejected the idea of killing him despite what he was told by Yoda, Obi Wan and even the Emperor himself. After persevering through that as a young and inexperienced Jedi, I can't understand why or how he'd lose perspective and think about killing a young padawan, his nephew, whose so inexperienced with the Force and not even as powerful or twisted as Vader. Makes no sense. He's a coward in this movie and just gives up. Kylo Ren isn't even that powerful. They could have delved deeper into this. That's just one problem I have with the movie.

Yes, stunningly boring. After 30 mins I was hoping the Germans would arrive and wipe them all out to end it early.

Which is arguably what should have happened in the actual event but the Germans had overstretched themselves in the lightning charge through France and took too long to bring up reinforcements.

But then if you look at the war from a dispassionate military standpoint, they should have won the whole thing. Their combat tactics, weaponary and technology were far in advance of the allies who spent the first two years grabbing hold of their own dicks

What the fuck has happened to scriptwriting and acting? The carefully sculpted shit is hitting the well positioned fan tonight. The memo, the memo, the memo. A limited hangout. Useful, but they have done it again. The left and the right working hand in hand to distract even hardcore cynics who think killing a few career bureaucrats and a clapped out old hag will solve our problems.

Hacksaw Ridge. Brilliant film. You'd call it bullshit if it wasn't a true story. Spent the night watching war movies in the hopeless realisation man rises to his greatest hight during the depths of his greatest low. Watch it as a sane person and you come away shocked and depressed and loathing of the glorified violence. Watch it as a realist and you might find solace in the realities of heroes, real heroes not superheroes, of the kind that detach themselves from the insanity of "humanity" and just do the right fucking thing, whatever the potential cost to themselves. "Fury" Spoiler:

Btw, that moment in Fury when the German kid who just happens to also be a German SS trooper spots Machine under the tank, and moves along without giving him up. Does that happen in real life? Maybe. Maybe not. But in the context of the film, the humanity it adds to an enemy that was previously being cut down, that's just great movie making. These are the things we want to go away and think about and reconsider long after the film has ended. You don't really get the same effect in the Untouchables, do you? Two different film types, two different purposes. It's one of the reasons why Fury is a much better film than it was received as.

I'm going to watch 6 Days again, even though I only watched it a few months ago. That's usually a no-no for me, but I'm in that groove. There are a couple of other "Days" movies. 12 days and 13 days, I think. Or is it 12 hours and 13 days. Anyway, 12 whatever, is Benghazi and more than worth the watch. Tbh I wasn't expecting to be cross-examined.
It's rare that I get much else from a film than entertainment, that is generally a film's raison d'etre.
But this is properly good sci-fi, I love that they've got the science right, no silly rocket noises, I heard they rewrote the CGI software to take relativistic effects into consideration.
And that bit at the end - where he's looking back from the other side of the book case - isn't CGI (well, I'm sure some of it is). They actually built that to make it look better.
Just loads of very impressive attention to detail, one of the best sci-fi films IMO, up there with 2001.

Netflix movies I'd recommended...

What Happend to Monday - decent Sci fi action about the future where people are only allowed one child. Check out the trailer.

Bridge of Spies - Spielberg and Tom Hanks again.

It's not a cross examination, it's a question.

I just thought Christians might have spotted a lot more in that film. Something profound.

Anyway, I don't know who wrote it but he's well up on how this world works. He touches many, many themes and presents his opinion in a calm way that leave things open for thought and disagreement. Unlike most films these days, I didn't feel repulsed as I watched it.

Loved it! Rami Malek was great as Freddie Mercury.

Turns out he was gay! Who knew??

Captain Marvel.

It's alright. Pretty standard Marvel fare.
Love the 90s theme though.

Anyway. Good film, I thought. Not sure Malik's performance was Oscar-worthy but he was good.

Plane home films:

"A Star Is Born".

Not a fan of GaGa, but have to admit she is outstanding in this. Really good film. And you get to see her boobs. And front bottom, very briefly. That's a freeze-frame job.

"The Favourite"

Enjoyed this although the end was a bit odd, it just sort of stopped. Not sure if Coleman was Oscar-worthy (I'd have gone for Glenn Close, having seen The Wife) but she is good.

"Three Identical Strangers."

Really interesting documentary which explores the nature vs nurture debate.

What the hell is the point of this? I know Disney are basically remaking all of their films as "live action" but there aren't any people IN TLK, so they're just remaking it in a different style of animation.
I know. Cha-ching. I guess that's the point. It's quite the con-trick though.

They’ll make a killing of course but I think it’s a nice way to introduce these classics to a new generation. It is fairly pointless though, granted.

I’ll still be watching it and their other remakes though because Disney is great.

Money, of course, but also to do with the copyright. I think it’s based on a law passed back in the late 90s about copyright extension - I think it’s currently the lifetime of the owner plus 70 years. That’s why they’re pretty much redoing all their animated films as ‘live action’ now. Disney is all about nostalgia and as long as they keep the copyright fresh they can keep tapping into that forever.

But...they’re classics because they’re good.
Didn’t they remake Psycho and it sucked? Don’t remake Psycho! It’s a classic, leave it alone. Just watch Psycho!

That said, I would concede that the Disney remakes I’ve seen so far have been great.
I was deeply skeptical about The Jungle Book but have to admit they nailed it.

Just feels like one big con trick which everyone is falling for (me included, admittedly).
It’s like getting people to buy a slightly different red shirt for £50 each year.

The point about copyright is interesting.

A Night To Remember.

The original “Titanic”.
It’s really good although showing its age a bit.
I like the fact it just sticks to the facts, in Titanic Cameron made up the Jake/Rose story and the disaster becomes a backdrop to that but actually it’s an amazing enough story in itself and doesn’t need any embellishment.

Aquaman

Dreadful. They keep getting worse.

Man Of Steel being dreadful and Zack Snyder's continued influence over their films completely ended my interest in the DC stuff.

I did see Wonder Woman after it's surprise success and positive reception. It was competent and being set free from Snyder's misery filter probably gave it an instant boost, but it felt a level below any of the Marvel films. The script wasn't really sharp enough, none of the characters were memorable and there was no spark.

Is Aquaman a mixture of both or just shit on its own terms?

The writing was atrocious. Cheesy dialog and bad acting.

The villain is ridiculous. The whole thing was like a Power Rangers episode.

Snyder’s grim outlook isn’t the issue - it’s mostly that he’s a hack of a director who can’t tell a coherent story to save his life. He’s not even a decent visual storyteller - which is pretty shit considering visuals are all he can offer.

Aquaman is terrible (James Wan so it’s to be expected) and rips off Blade Runner, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Avatar, Lord of the Rings and Flash Gordon in the process. And Nicole Kidman eats a goldfish.

Given what’s happening with Marvel right now, Warner Bros should be sending their superhero films the same way as their MonsterVerse.
