Creed II
I liked it, it's basically Rocky IV II, with a dash of Rocky III (champion underestimates a raw, hungry opponent and has to train in a different way to overcome him).
It was good but I kinda think they should call it a day, there's only so many things you can do with this genre and they've pretty much done them all at least twice now.

Stan & Ollie.
Big fan of Laurel and Hardy, me, and really enjoyed this. Gives you some insight into the relationship between the two of them and Reilly and Coogan play the parts well.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Re-watched this last night to remind myself as I’m watching the new one today.
It’s good but holes in the plot bigger than in the Arsenal defence.
Lots of parts really don’t make much sense.
Enjoyable enough though.

Master Splinter
23-12-2019, 10:27 AM
Last Jedi at least tried to take the plot in a new direction. Which is admirable given the mandate by Disney/Lucasfiilm seems to have been just to retread old ground with different faces and a more cohesive visual style.

Saying that, the new one was really good fun and has the best pacing of the new films. It never really lets up. Ironically, it seems heavily influenced by Guardians Of The Galaxy.

Star Wars has always been a massively erratic mishmash that is better in theory and people's memories than on the actual screen. It's always been poorly written so any complaints about plotholes, inconsistencies and a deep analysing of it's philosophies are futile.

In conclusion, Rogue One is obviously the best Star Wars film because it's a focused, finite story that is efficiently told by a talented director and it has the best robot.

Finally watched Joker.

Wanted to give up several times, was riveted at other times. Really dark, really disturbing. For some reason his constant smoking was highly disconcerting. Why? Can't explain it. It teases. You're always waiting for him to snap. But when he does, it's a bit of a letdown and fairly predictable. Can't decide if this was enjoyable or not. It took effort to watch it, it's slow in many places. But the acting performance from the lead role pulls it through regardless. This is Joaquin Phoenix's Joker that could conceivably exist, which is a bit scary, against Heath Ledger's stylised and cool, but ultimately fantastical, cartoon alternative. Ledger's is more watchable, Phoenix's is more lock your doors because you never know.

Master Splinter
28-03-2020, 10:23 PM
Joker seems too indebted to its inspirations to have anything original to say. It doesn't even try to hide the blatant homage to Taxi Driver and The King Of Comedy, considering De Niro is right there at the centre of it. And not to mention A Clockwork Orange. The difference here is that the central character comes across as overwhemingly self-pitying. The film then nudging you towards sympathy for his supposed plight would also make you dangerously sympathic towards wanton violence and anarchy.

Joaquin Phoenix's physical performance is powerful, but he pulled off something similar just a year earlier in You Were Never Really Here. It is eerily similar at times and the overall effect of the film is far more unnerving than Joker.

Niall_Quinn
28-03-2020, 10:44 PM
I didn't feel any sympathy for the character at all, not even when his childhood story was revealed. Which was a bit of a cliche and throwaway excuse anyway. A little pity at times, sometimes repulsion, mostly embarrassment on his behalf. I thought the writing for the cops investigating him was weak. They'd have been all over him at a much earlier stage, though I guess this is a fantasy city and a fantasy police force so maybe they do things in a more fantasy way. Clockwork Orange had a much bigger effect, to the point I haven't really wanted to watch that again. You get it first time around. With Joker, I suppose you could dig in several times and find more themes and concepts, but there's too much padding to push through to get there so not sure I'd make the effort.

Haven't seen You Were Never Really Here so that's going on the list.

Don't bother with Midway. Bonkers film. Huge sprawling build up, main action then flashes past hardly covering any of the details of the battle (which are very important historically), then it has a happy American style ending. Effects are good but that's about it. Americans are stereotypes, chewing gum, heroic sacrifices, bullet proof. Japanese are stereotyped, trying to commit suicide every 5 minutes, doing sneaky stuff.

So there I am, in Sri Lanka, formerly Ceylon, at about 3 o'clock in the morning, looking for one thousand brown M&Ms to fill a brandy glass, or Ozzy wouldn't go on stage that night. So, Jeff Beck pops his head 'round the door, and mentions there's a little sweets shop on the edge of town. So - we go. And - it's closed. So there's me, and Keith Moon, and David Crosby, breaking into that little sweets shop, eh. Well, instead of a guard dog, they've got this bloody great big Bengal tiger. I managed to take out the tiger with a can of mace, but the shopowner and his son... that's a different story altogether. I had to beat them to death with their own shoes. Nasty business, really. But, sure enough, I got the M&Ms, and Ozzy went on stage and did a great show.

i've been to the pictures about once in the last six years, saw the Laurel and Hardy film (which is very good btw) with a mate in one of those little cinemas in Odeon leicester square - it was fine and the few people there stayed quiet, but too many times in the past it's been spoilt by people talking at key moments or stuffing their faces with popcorn, sweets etc

quite liked the Everyman idea of sofas etc but even that's spoilt by people having food deliverd to their seat during the movie

i'd still go now and again if a friend suggested it but not that bothered tbh

Depends on the film. I'm not into the Marvel stuff but I did enjoy the Star Wars films and think they are really worth seeing on a big screen and with a crowd.

So...yeah.

And I didn’t miss anything.
Let’s try a football analogy, shall we? One I’ve used before.

I wanted Liverpool to win the CL Final a couple of years ago.
Except I didn’t. I just wanted Spurs to lose.
Ideally I’d have liked both to lose but that wasn’t an option.
So I picked the least bad option, which is what we are forced to do in many elections these days.

So, I can cheer Spurs losing the CL Final without cheering Liverpool winning it.
I know you do understand that despite pretending not to.

Why are we using a football analogy again?

But if you want to use one, here's a valid version. Liverpool lead Arsenal 5-0 with 2 minutes to go. The match is stopped and the crowd is asked to go home. When they get home they check the TV and find Arsenal took a 6-5 lead during the stoppage, and then the final 2 minutes played out with Liverpool protesting and everyone calling them sore losers.

When they get home they check the TV and find Arsenal took a 6-5 lead during the stoppage, and then the final 2 minutes played out with Liverpool protesting and everyone calling them sore losers.

I don't accept that's a valid analogy. I don't think that's what has happened.
I'd say pre-match the pundits all reckoned that Arsenal were more of a second half team.
Forget about the crowd, we know that Liverpool were 3-1 up at half time but Arsenal ended up winning 4-3, scoring the winner in injury time
Given what was known pre-match, it's nothing that surprising. Yeah, I get Liverpool fans will be annoyed.
They might blame the ref. They might say that the winner was offside. Maybe they're right but then present some evidence and let VAR have a look.

Ultimately, I just want Trump out. I cannot abide him, it's almost unhealthy how much I dislike him.
I can't stand his constant lies, the way he conducts himself.
I
Cannot
Stand Him.

So if he does lose this I'll be cheering long and loud. But sure, if he's been robbed, if Biden was offside then VAR should take a look.
But Trump needs to provide some evidence for VAR to have a look at. Maybe he has done in which case fine, we'll see what happens.

And, finally, none of the above means I think Biden is a great option and I particularly want him to be president either, but he's the only other option right now.

I haven't seen it but it certainly seemed like a bad idea, can't believe how people thought it would bwnefit gender equality to murder such a popular film

It was a bad idea because the original is so good. Why remake such a good film? Some "reboots" have managed it fairly successfully - I was highly sceptical about The Jungle Book but must admit the live action version is excellent and they've done something a bit different with it which kinda justifies its existence. I don't understand the "shot for shot" ones - yes, I am looking at you "Beauty and the Beast". There's nothing wrong with the new one, but it just feels a bit pointless...well, the point is to make money of course so I guess it did a job.

"Bobby"

Documentary about Bobby Moore. I don't think I'd quite appreciated just how good he was till I saw it. Very good.

“Coming 2 America”

Finally got around to watching this.
It’s pretty much what I’d heard - a bit rubbish but with enough references to the original and amusing moments to make it watchable enough. Glad I’ve seen it but won’t bother to do so again.

I thought Id hate the 101 Dalmatians live action but no it was good. The problem is that agenda filled films rarely work. The thing studios still haven't accepted is that men rarely go to watch these films either alone or at the prompting of a female they are involved in. On the other hand most girls will follow their man to watch a film even if they are not particularly interested in it. Hence the popularity of franchises like "Fast and Furious". Does anyone think F&F would be as popular if it was an all female cast. It really messes with these peoples minds that they cant undo 300,000 years of evolution in 10 years.

I see your laughable ability to turn 180 degrees about face is in full evidence again

I was responding to you saying "It would be fewer than we wiped out when we stopped Saddam launching a 45 minute mushroom cloud on London. LOL. YOU believed that at the time - didn't you? Be honest. Because that is what you are - a slave."

In other words you were slagging off the Iraq war - then when I say I marched against the war, you say you did too - but then you say you were ignorant, thereby implying that you were, err, wrong to march against the war…

so which is it - are you for or against the Iraq war?

or does it depend on what time of day it is or how much you’ve had to drink or which youtube ranter you’ve been watching in the last half hour?

You’ve got no real opinions - just hatred, anger and prejudice which you aim at anything or anyone passing by

And how did that march go for you? Or the Iraqis that were bombed?

That's what I thought.

And all these years later people like you are still waiting for something to follow.

"people like you"

you have no idea about me or anyone else because you lens everything people write through your own heavily-distorted prejudiced view

and as for wanting something to follow, you mean like all those moronic conspiracy theorists you spend your drunken nights watching on Youtube?

That's all you've got lady boy?

Dumb fucks like you march 2 million strong, get ignored then deny the excruciatingly obvious fact you aren't the one calling the shots. You must be one of those conspiracy nutters who thinks democracy is real. I guess.

i don't deny anything - i've been on those marches knowing full well c***s like Johnson are sitting there chuckling and don't give a f**k

but it's better than sitting at home swigging from a whisky bottle and writing abuse online

I’m always skeptical about marches as they are generally ineffective, but obviously I support people’s right to go on them.

Poll tax is the only one I can remember actually forcing a rethink in policy.

Well...it was a Bond movie. I guess you know what you're going to get, and you got it.
Apart from at the end :o #nospoilers.
I don't think it's Craig's best Bond film but I quite liked it.

No Time To Die 8/10

Never been a big fan of Craig as Bond. Pierce Brosnan will always be Bond to me but it's probably the last time the character will be a straight white male and it was a good send off, of course being 2021 you can't escape some liberal pandering, they had to make the new 007 a black woman and for some reason we had to find out Q is a homo but aside from that it was a good movie.
