I didn't think it was that good either. Similar set up to LOTR but the characters aren't as strong and the stake aren't as high. The quest for the Ring felt epic and weighty.

Best they had let the classic Bourne trilogy remain and not taint the franchise with sub-par plots and characters.

Wicked movie.

Watched 'The Place Beyond the Pines' last night. It's getting critical acclaim but I don't get the applause. Seemed way too disjointed but it's getting love because it's an indie flick. Good acting though and manages to hold your attention.

Amen to that.

Watched the Bourne legacy recently and the franchise has disappeared up its own arse. It even cheapened the first 3 films by making you ask whether the over-convoluted sub-plot was in fact a bit irritating. Might watch an earlier film to find out.

The franchise is in good hands. George Lucas was a bum and had no idea what he was doing with it after the first three films. I was more pissed about him releasing the originals on video, DVD, cinema, Blu Ray…just to tweak sound or add new CGI scenes. You know the guy has sold out as soon as he’s got Yoda doing Vodaphone and the shitty Lego Star Wars stuff. The prequel trilogy has really put a stain on the franchise and it’s partly because he wrote and directed them. He’s special effects man and was smart enough to sign a toy deal with Star Wars so he could milk more money out of the film. He’s not a good director or writer.

JJ Abram is on board with the new film and I trust he’ll do a good job. There are so many stories Disney can tell with Star Wars and I’m sure there are a host of talented writers and directors that will want in on the action.

Was forced to watch a film called Foster. Holy fuck, what an abomination and crime against film making. Just dog shit from start to finish. Absolutely nothing remotely decent about any part of it. Total puke. It's so bad it's humiliating to come to the blessed end of it and still be sitting there (unless you have died in the act of watching it which is not only possible but likely). Iron Man 3:
Probably the best of the three. It almost turns into Transformers at the end, but overall really good fun with by far the best action and villain in the series.

Star Trek Into Darkness:
Not the big step up from the first you would expect. There's not much character development, aside from Spock being the most interesting crew member again. But, Benedict Cumberbatch elevates the film. Whenever he's on screen, it's far more thrilling and intense.

Man Of Steel:

The sad thing is that it starts of really impressively, with a spectacular-looking recreation of Krypton and amazing technology and awesome dragon bird things. Then we get to Earth and it's all so disjointed in terms of character, plot, tone and well, everything. It stays like that throughout until the final act, which is quite simply carnage. It's strange that we spend so much time on Krypton but we see so little of Clark Kent's childhood. Considering Superman is ironically the most human of superheroes, despite technically being the least, there's barely any connection with the main character, nevermind the thinly-written supporting cast. Understandably they're trying to go down a different route as Nolan did with Batman Begins, but rather than a rich backstory and well-defined characters with motivations all you get is vague flashbacks and poorly edited reams of blandness. A different take is fine, but removing the warmth, charm and emotion that is associated with the series and replacing it with what amounts to Independence Day 2 but with talking, non-generic aliens, is a complete misstep. It seems the writer got bored and just hobbled some scenes together until the big bang boom crash finale. Which goes on for ages. And is also quite boring until Superman and Zod finally face-off.

The fact that they turned something like Superman into something this dreary and uninvolving is quite impressive. It was expected that a Zack Snyder film would be all spectacle with no substance, but Goyer has a good track record (Blade 3 aside) with comic book adaptations and Nolan's involvement should have been a positive too. There are some decent performances from Crowe and Michael Shannon and some of the action is what you'd want from a 21st century Superman film, but on the whole it just completely misses the mark.

Time for Dean Cain to come back tbf.

Nah, I thought the movie got it spot on. It was relentless. The childhood stuff was handled well. A linear boy to man narrative showing his progression is unnecessary. It's been done so many times and where movies like this often fall apart. I'm gonna watch it again. Was blown away by that movie. Special effects were awesome and it's been a while since I've really been gobsmacked by special effects.

Didn't warm to the character at all because the development was very rushed and disjointed. By the end I felt like I was watching Transformers or something.

Got a few mates that have seen it too and they called to rave on about it as well. The critics seem 50/50 on it but most people like it. See for yourself. It's the same guy that directed Watchmen, 300 and Sucker Punch. Script was done by Nolan who did the Dark Knight's.

Book of Eli was pretty good! Thought provoking. If you take away the rules and regulations in society, throw away law and order, how far would humanity fall and what sort of people would survive? It's a good post Apocalypse movie and worth the watch. It's not a balls to the wall action movie but I thought the action scenes were cool. Themes of religion in there too but it's all relevant. It's not saying Christianity will save the world either it's a bit deeper than that. It's just about order and chaos. Like it or not, religion is what helped form the building blocks to modern society because it's where a lot of morals, laws and principles come from.

Man of Steel was good but I can't imagine the two being in the same film with that same sort of tone. The Batman movies were dark and serious thrillers and they tried to ground it in realism. To introduce aliens into that sort of world......just doesn't seem right.

If Arsenal were a film what film would it be?

I think it would be Casino

Wenger would be Sam Rothstein.....the micro manager who despite his meticulous nature has a naive streak to him and believes he can convince his hedonistic wife Ginger (emblematic of all Arsenal stars who have their head turned by bigger clubs) to stay faithful to him.

The board and Hill-Wood/Chips Keswick are Remo Gagi and the old Chicago/Milwaukee Mob Bosses who don't care about anything other than getting the skim from the casino.

Steve Bould is Billy Sherbert, Rothstein's wing man

David Dein is Andy Stone.....who tries to counsel Rothstein and give him good advice but is clipped by the Mob Bosses because at the end of the day he isn't one of them.

Ivan Gazidis is a cross between Phillip Green and Artie Pescano (the guy who could f**k up a cup of coffee) - naive, grandiose and stupid and generally bring only trouble.

Nicky Santoro embodies all the new clubs/managers who want to come in and plant their flag not really caring who in the old order they upset in doing so....eventually seduces Ginger into leaving Rothstein and being with him.

This: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0896533/ ?

Or do you mean The Conjuring, the new film by the director of Saw and Insidious? It's not out until next week.

Sorry about the mis-spelling....

Saw some ad on tv today that it was the #1 movie in America, and assumed it was released in the UK as well. Hence, my inquiry.

I liked both Saw and Insidious, and this is apparently his best film so far, so it should be pretty good.

There's an Insidious 2 coming out in a few months, which is odd in that a) it comes out so soon after The Conjuring and b) a sequel is unnecessary.

For some reason, he's directing The Fast And Furious 68 next.

Think I'll watch it over the weekend then. Hopefully it will live up to director's usual high standards.

Pacific Rim:

From the trailers, I thought it looked incredibly juvenile, stupidly noisy and poorly written.

It was.

But it was also surprisingly satisfying and one of the most enjoyable brain-not-required blockbusters for ages.

It's evident early on that it is completely embracing what it is: an over-the-top B-movie inspired by classic Japanese and American monster movies and cartoons of the 80s and 90s. It's made by big kids for big kids. It's basically an episode of Power Rangers (with a budget) crossed with Godzilla and sprinkled with goofily macho dialogue straight out of Turtles. Despite the CGI not being completely convincing, the huge (genuinely the biggest battles you'll ever see and much more exciting than the borefest that was Man Of Steel) robot v creature bouts are impressively visceral.

The acting is terrible (purposefully I suspect in the case of Idris Elba), the accents are worse, the plot is shoddy, the one-liners are dodgy, but if you accept that you're watching something that revels in it's silliness and has some awlsome action scenes, you can't really be disappointed.
