Hamilton up to second.

McNamara That Ghost...
09-10-2011, 06:52 AM
The incident between Vettel and Button right at the start (think he cut him off basically) is under investigation.

McNamara That Ghost...
09-10-2011, 06:58 AM
Alonso ahead of Massa, no defending by Massa at all. Although it's tough to tell with him.

McNamara That Ghost...
09-10-2011, 07:01 AM
No further action between Vettel and Button. I guess that is because it's at turn one at the very start of the race.

McNamara That Ghost...
09-10-2011, 07:02 AM
Button back ahead of Hamilton. Hamilton has a problem and has to pit!

McNamara That Ghost...
09-10-2011, 07:03 AM
It was a right rear puncture, Hamilton hadn't been looking after them again I guess.

McNamara That Ghost...
09-10-2011, 07:09 AM
Buemi is out.

McNamara That Ghost...
09-10-2011, 07:20 AM
Button is ahead of Vettel! Although that's fourth and fifth rather than first and second that it presumably will be later on.

McNamara That Ghost...
09-10-2011, 07:22 AM
Massa and Hamilton touched each other again.

McNamara That Ghost...
09-10-2011, 07:26 AM
Safety Car is out. Due to Hamilton taking a chunk out of Massa's front wing presumably.

McNamara That Ghost...
09-10-2011, 07:32 AM
Webber loses his front wing against Schumacher!

McNamara That Ghost...

Alonso is right up on Button now! Two laps to go.

McNamara That Ghost...
09-10-2011, 08:10 AM
Button wins! Congrats to him. Alonso second, Vettel third and is now a Double World Champion.. Congrats to him.

Then Webber, Hamilton, Schumacher and Massa. Button is second in the Drivers' Championship.

It was a racing incident this time. And this time it didn't really impede either driver, Massa lost part of his car but it didn't affect him in the say way as opposed to getting a punctured tyre.

Vettel and Button was right at the start, ones like that rarely get punished.

Also, Coulthard and Brundle seemed to indicate that if anyone was to be apportioned blame for the Hamilton/Massa one then it probably would be Hamilton (I think Coulthard called it 'naughty') but even so, that would be stretching it on this occasion.

GP
10-10-2011, 03:08 PM
I don't think it's fair to point fingers elsewhere really.

I'm a massive Hamilton fan, but he's not had a good season. Some incidents weren't his fault, but a lot have been.

Needs to do better next year.

Well, kinda. Vettell + Red Bull

If he had a teammate who wasn't useless it would probably be a bit different.

The team strongly favours the dislikeable urchin over Webber and that's got to have a bearing both on performance and confidence. But yes, you stick Alonso in the Red Bull and give both drivers the same support and Vettel is second every time. Not sure about Hamilton, he's had a mare of a season and most of it has been his own fault.

McNamara That Ghost...
30-10-2011, 02:46 PM
Alonso has made driving errors too. He was also passed fairly cleanly by Vettel (though Vettel had to place some of the car on the grass) at Monza. Just like Hamilton was at Yeongam and neither of those were in a DRS zone. The Red Bull car is not the fastest in all facets of racing, it's getting a bit tiresome labouring this point - straight line speed the most notable. Clearly though, whatever Red Bull and Vettel are doing together is working, why would they want to put another driver in just to prove his ability or alleged lackthereof?

And I'm not sure there has been a huge amount of evidence of hugely favouring Vettel over Webber this season, certainly nothing you wouldn't expect a team to make a sensible decision about anyway. The reliability in the car is there for Webber by virtue of the fact only once has he failed to finish, the only persistant mechanical issue Webber seems to have is with KERS but that seems to be the case for Vettel sometimes too. I don't accept Webber has a lack of confidence, no way would he have gone side-by-side with Alonso like he did at Spa if that was the case. His main problem is dropping back on the first lap - he has lost more places from his starting positions than anybody else, I think.

GP
30-10-2011, 03:17 PM
Yeah I'm not sure Webber is being disadvantaged by the team in any obvious way, I just don't see him as a top-level driver. He's a midfield driver in a winning team, and sometimes that shows. At no point this season has he troubled Vettell in any way.

And you're right that the Red Bull isn't the fastest in a straight line (that's the Toro Rosso this weekend) but over a lap of a racing circuit, they are by far the fastest, and have been for 2 and a half seasons.

I'm not taking anything away from Vettell, he's clearly very fast, but some (not yourself) seem to be under the impression he's working miracles with a midfield car.

McNamara That Ghost...
30-10-2011, 03:29 PM
Well there's no doubt that the Red Bull is probably the fastest on say fast corners (like in Sector 2/3 of India) and they aren't exactly slow in straight line speed. It just seems a bit churlish for him to constantly be denigrated for being in the fastest overall car when how often is it that the winner of the World Championship wasn't in the fastest overall car? You don't hear anybody ever discredit Button's win with Brawn GP (rightly so having said that) although like you indicate, the second half of that season Brawn tailed off a little bit.

There probably is a middle ground here to be had but it comes across as rather embittered. It's like the racing equivalent of saying you need to prove you can do it on a wet, windy night in the Britannia before you can be outrightly praised.

The BBC posed the question after Vettel finished fourth at the Nurburgring about what we're talking about here but at the subsequent races have admitted they were wrong to suggest he can't 'race'.

It's interesting why there is this discussion about Vettel in the first place (and I mean not just on GW, many other forums and in the media). Is it because we have a problem as a nation or just as people as accepting the person in the present being one of the best drivers we've seen? Or is it because (at least in the media) they don't want to be seen as rating another nations' driver over one of 'their' guys whilst he is still racing?

GP
30-10-2011, 03:38 PM
Well, of course. The World Champion is ALWAYS in either the fastest or at least among the fastest car. For example, Kimi, Hamilton and Alonso have won the championship in extremely fast cars, without being completely dominant. In fact, Red Bull would have wrapped up the title much earlier last season had it not been for their early reliability issues. Like you said, their cars have been bulletproof this season, which has just underlined how dominant they've been.
