View Full Version : Solutions without Cazorla

He's awlsome. But he can't play every game. In fact we know he'll be crippled at some point. So considering the specialism of the position he occupies, we'll need more solutions.

Ramsey - not the same player. Will not be dictating a game. I'm not sure Wenger sees him as a central player now, but if played there, it would be more about directness and trying to score goals.

Diaby - again, very different. Will be playing from deep when fit. But he's played the advanced role many times before and is a good goalscorer.

Wheelchair - always played from deep. Kind of deviated away from the advanced role many thought he would grow into. Yet you'd have to call him the closest replication in terms of delivering quality forward passes and finding solutions in tight areas. Maybe unwise to speculate as he's missed a season of football.

Rosicky - dead. But did well last season. Quickens the play. Direct and aggressive player. Nearly 32 and an injury history. How are his legs?

Oxlade-Chamberlain - don't know if he's ready for that kind of responsibility yet.

4-4-fucking-2 - could it work? Are there the players to do it? Playing four creative players as a tight midfield unit plus Podolski/Giroud and Gervinho/Walcott/Chamakh  up front.

What works best when he's out? Bearing in mind not only has he fitted extremely adeptly into his position, but he already has a great relationship with many of the others. You don't want to lose that cohesion. But obviously throughout the season, different solutions will be needed as he won't play well all the time either. Just wondering really as I do not see many signs of an alternative formation.

There is no solution really, he's one of the best in the world at what he does.

We played a very different formation today. I saw it as 4-6-0. As far as I can see, benching Giroud wasn't a one-off. He's going to stay on the bench. Wenger is now trying a pacey guy up front who'll drift out wide. Today it was Gervinho but I suspect he'll alternate between Gervinho and Walcott. He has talked about Walcott playing up front twice now in a week, and how he is trying it out in training, so I think there's something there. With that, I don't think Cazorla gets the second-striker freedom he was on about last week; he'll just play as a CM that's a bit more attacking than Arteta and Diaby/Coquelin.

Cazorla's great but I don't think we're playing everything through him right now. I don't think he got any goals or assists today even though he obviously had a great game. You're not going to find another player in the squad who can do as well as he can but if you're thinking about the attacking CM role, we're supposed to have about 79 players who prefer to play there; Wilshere the most obvious candidate. It's going to be a step-down but you could survive.

That's what I mean. Well, not quite the 4-6-0 thing (good call), but the effectiveness of the 'drifting' of the front three is reliant on Cazorla, IMO. The attacking CM role is very different depending on which player goes there. It would just be interesting because Wenger's been wanting Cazorla in the team for two years and puts him at the heart of things straight away. The one other midget attacking midfielder deemed good enough to get that responsibility was Fabregas. I don't think we ever found great solutions when he was out. I do think things rely on him now and just wonder what Wenger sees as 'plan B' with the current complement of players.
