Absolute must win now against Monty.

only we could have well and truly arsenal'd that up and we did.

the 'weekly fuck up that leads to a goal award' goes to: cazorla

in all seriousness, how many fucking defensive mistakes are we going to make? its EVERY FUCKING WEEK.

anyway, see what happens when you give giroud some decent service? everytime we got the ball out wide and crossed it in the first half he looked dangerous. well taken goal tonight.

also we played counter attacking football in the first half and we looked very dangerous, then for some reason the team came out, played tippy tappy, slow paced football in the second half and we truly cocked it up.

Disappointing to throw away a 2 goal lead but much better tonight, Walcott should have won it at the death.

We'll qualify no problem. Beginning to leak two goals a game too often - not good enough for the best defence in the league ( one that Wenger doesnt feel he needs to worry about).

Glad we got a point in the end. Fighting chance of qualifying with a win against Montpellier.

We look a better attacking unit with theo. he's frustrating as hell but he's the best we've got at the moment. Expect him to be immediately dropped as soon as Ramsey is fit again.

Cazorla looks worryingly out of sorts. Wilshere carrying this team already - desperate stuff.

Good result but another pretty poor performance for most of the game. I think our last good performance came against West Ham before the international break. Schalke looked much superior to us, both technically and tactically. It's disappointing that we're not able to control games anymore, and create chances through high quality, incisive passing and quick counter-attacks. But this is the level we're at now, and given that, it's a very important point against a superior side.

Don't think he was too bad tonight, but maybe that was because his mistakes could only lead to a threat on a wing and not to the heart of the defence where it's more noticeable. Farfans shot was going in anyway so I'm not sure he could have done a lot there other than throw himself at it and hope for the best.

there was no one on that left side at all when the ball fell to farfan. he kept falling out of position on the left, although podolski took his time to make an effort getting back. quite happy with the result really as we'll get to 10 points in the next game but it would serve us much better to finish third.

Don't think he was too bad tonight, but maybe that was because his mistakes could only lead to a threat on a wing and not to the heart of the defence where it's more noticeable. Farfans shot was going in anyway so I'm not sure he could have done a lot there other than throw himself at it and hope for the best.

Beautiful finish for the goal, one koscielny would be proud of.

having that middle man that can link play is very important to our attack which he can do but if he drops deep, he struggles to get back into the move. he was quite isolated tonight with no support around him so again he was chasing lost causes. he needs to improve on the deck too as he won't be getting great crosses in the air every game.

at least we got some goals on the bloody board and showed something in a tough away match. i think most of us had it down for a loss and whilst we should've taken three, having enough to take a point is an improvement on how we last saw this side perform. these times are not good at all but you have to find something to give you some motivation to watch the next game.

on the performance...
For us it was important first of all not to lose and if possible to win. We managed the first part, not the second one. I felt that overall we played reasonably well, but dropped physically in the second half. The regret we have is that we conceded the goal just before half time and we missed the [Theo Walcott] chance at the end of the game. I think the two, of course, have a big impact on the result overall. Schalke never gave up and worked hard. I believe we have shown a good response to Saturday's game and you feel the team is getting better. I think in one month, if we continue to develop, we will be there.

on Walcott's display...
He did well, very well. He had a positive attitude and was fresh as well. He was the only one you always felt could make a difference and it was no coincidence he had the chance in the final minute.

on a foul for first Schalke goal...
Yes, on Walcott and he gave foul against Walcott. I invite you to see it again. It is a foul from Afellay on Walcott, 100 per cent.

on Mannone-Szczesny selection problem...
We'll see. I don't look too much for coming problems. In my job you don't miss problems. You miss more solutions, that at the moment is not a big problem. Mannone had a good game, he had a good game in Manchester for me as well. It is good, very interesting. His confidence gets better in every game.

on Walcott and Podolski playing as strikers...
Well, a winger is a striker. Not for you? Giroud has Walcott and Podolski with him. We scored two goals. We had more chances and played with three offensive midfielders as well. At some stage, we have to put one or two defenders in the team as well.

on the state of Group B...
It's open. We are of course in a position where we want to win our home game. If we win, we have a 50 per cent chance of going through because Schalke play Olympiacos here. They are in a position where they have absolutely to win that game as well. It will of course depend on our result first against Montpellier and then we will see what happens here. It could go to last game, we could, with luck, do it in the next game. Anyway, we are in a position where we must win against Montpellier.

Was it a foul on Theo?

Huntelaar is a finisher but we'll need more that. We need the complete striker and that won't come cheap. They will have to mobile, strong, have quick feet and able to finish. Giroud is struggling because he's not mobile enough and tries to ghost his way into positions instead using brute force and just going direct. His movement is nowhere near quick enough and I fear that would be the same fate for Huntelaar.

my take on the match.

we did well imo, the last few games we have been awful, yet yesterday we seemed a lot better then previous games. yes we gave away a two goal lead but ill take a point there all day long.

thought the first half was brilliant, we seemed up for it, and a lot more settled then i have seen us for a while but just like the reading game, the goal at half time switched the momentum. we had a good chance i think to make it 3-0 (cant remember who it was) and we have to take those chances.

the second goal showed why vermaelen cant play at left back for me, hes a central defender and it showed, we need to play a full back there.
we had a chance to win it, theo has to take those chances, that really was a bad miss from a man demanding to play and play as a striker.
i have no idea what planet the ref was one, i have never seen us be allowed to play on while a player is injured then when we through on goal, stop the game. we might not have scored but that took away a golden opportunity.

overall im happy with the point, a lot of posistives from that match, esp as it is a hard match to go, however lots of improvement still to be made. but its a step in the right direction of recent weeks

I think the reason he stopped it was because he wasn't confident in his assistant. You have to be able to tell if Podolski was really onside or whether he was onside only because the player who was down was playing him on. Unfortunate because I think there was a fair chance we'd have converted that.

If the ref sent him of he'd have been even more of a pleb, its understanable why Poldi was angry, the guy goes down before he got in the box and the ref did not stop it then. Only when he gets in a good place the ref, stopped it. Don't even think poldi deserves a booking tbh.

I would indeed. And I take your point too. But I'm afraid that I have rather lost faith in this, or any team of Wenger's to make permanent improvements. I have said before, and I'll say it again - Wenger playes a peculiarly difficult brand of football that can be pulled off consistently only by top top quality players - the caliber of which we no longer attract or are able to pay for, or technical players at the absolute top of their game. Anything less and we struggle. This IMO is why we seem so open to loss of confidence. Normal teams have a game plan, and player roles that they can revert to even if certain, or all of the players are slightly off form - something to trust in - a parachute if you like. Our players don't have this.

Secondly - I have always felt that a successful team should first and foremmost be set up to protect its own goal - because if you can stop the other side scoring they cannot win. I know that we have traditionally not been a defensive team under Wenger, and I know also that you have to venture forwards in order to win the game yourselves. But for me it is lamentable that our players simply are not being drilled either to defend as a team, or to play in a way that avoids the continual mistakes that we are seeing in defence. It should come naturally to a team to protect a 2 goal lead. For us, all we seem to do is to stop attacking - which invites the other team onto us. Yet we remain as vulnerable as ever in defence. There are basic flaws in this team, that a moderately improved performance cannot mask.

We huffed and puffed and came away with a point. I thought we were 2nd best throughout TBH which didn't surprise me. Apart from the spell where we scored the 2 we looked disjointed and fairly uncomfortable at the back.

Getting out of the group wont' be easy, we absolutely have to beat Montepellier next game because I'm not confident we can go to Olympiakos and win if we need to.

Kinda want us to do a Liverpool and collect a couple of 2nd rate cups. Draw at home to Monty. Draw/Lose away in Greece. Finish 3rd. Watch Giroud and Gervinho (who are UEFA Cup level players) not look out of their depth, beat a bunch of stupid, recklessly attacking part-timers. Put all the focus on the league cup because Wenger's getting abused after Theo leaves for £5m to Chelsea, close that out. 4th place, 11 girls, 2 cups.

I agree with a lot of that, particularly the bit about our whole style of play relying of very good, technical players. Players which we arguably don't have enough of any more. We'll see where we are in a couple of weeks. We should win on Saturday vs Fulham (should being the operative word). The NLD will be interesting as there's not much between the sides right now but we're more than capable of winning that one. If we win those two the mood around here, and amongst fans in general, will thaw somewhat.

If we don't then I might avoid this place for a while!

It is a good result albeit a meaningless result because no team playing like that belongs in the CL let alone has a chance of even competing as a potential contender. Our play was awful - we had no composure and were incapable organising ourselves not to get over-run all over the pitch - and the worst thing about this is, it is not an anomaly, it is par for the course these days.

Not great no as we should really have beaten them at home, the fact we didn't reflects badly on us really. With that in mind (and dropped points at home) we should have gone out there and made up for it by winning.

I think we have good enough technical players in our front six to maintain the fourth place trophy but we don't have a manager that can manage them well enough. sure, they are no cescs and rvps but ability wise as good as any other team aiming for fourth.

the problem is through all the bonds that need to be forged, injuries, misplaced trust in some players form and persisting with odd systems with players out of position etc then it will undermine the season and this time, we don't have a goal machine to bail us out.

as MO alludes to above, the 'team' will not be good enough, as a unit.

Its not like its easy to go to their ground and win, even Barca Struggled to beat Celtic away and just about beat them at home. Yes we should have done better at home, but we have no right to expect a win at their place. Cl is not as easy as it use to be.

Schalke are a decent side but no higher than 3rd tier in European football imo.

Them beating us was an upset. We should have rectified that mistake at their place and didnt and the way we didnt makes it worse. Losing a 2 goal lead just showed up all of our mental weakness

1 point in 2 games v Schalke, a team we should be getting 4+ from is shocking

Who really cares as long as we qualify thats the name of the game.

End of the day our team is shite and its stupid to expect to go there and get 3 points cause they beat us at home it does not work like that.

They beat Dortmund in the game before they played us, so id hadly say they are a bad side.

historically you'd be right about schalke but on current form (that has been improving year on year) they are a very good side. as they are right now i'd put them in a second tier ability and performance wise, so using the same way to judge arsenal, we'd be a third tier right now. we've been in the cl a very long time and should have a better standing in it but we don't, we've never risen above being second tier.

i think you would be right to say that teams in the knockout round would want to draw us given our history but i'm not sure its fact most teams wanted us in their group. regardless of what wenger or anyone else thinks about our qualifying record it means we would be seen as serious contenders to grab one of the spots in a group. given we were in the top section of teams everyone outside that would expect a struggle to get through if in our group - as we are seeing now. we're playing poorly and still holding second.

granted, we'll go out very quickly once out of the group, but thats not my point.

We finished 3rd last year. You need to look up mediocre.

We're looking poor at the moment. In the context of recent form, and Shalke beating us at our place, getting a point out there was a good result and one that you'd have taken before the game. We got one (admittedly letting a 2 goal lead slip which was disappointing - but at least we didn't go on to lose, in fact we might have won it at the death) and you moan your moany tits off
