Expected to conceded as soon as we saw Kos on the team sheet but Theo saved the day.

Cazorla was poor. Arteta terrible.

Wilshere and the front 3 were awlsome

Giroud got a couple of plus 1s but the main man is none other than Theo motherfucking sign that contract now Walcott

Fantastic second half performance, we should be trying to play at that tempo for 90 minutes. When we put opponents under pressure, most EPL clubs don't have the technical ability to keep the ball and it allows us to dominate.

Walcott was outstanding, 3 goals and 2 assists, not much more you can ask for. Yes, he missed a few chances and missed that pass to Cazorla, but no striker in the entire world goes through 90 minutes without making a mistake. RVP last season missed loads of chances as well. I really hope we do whatever it takes so that he signs a contract, he's proved how effective he is up front and has been hugely productive for the last 2.5 years.

Defensively though, we still look poor. The two fullbacks were responsible for all 3 of the goals, and that's an area of concern.

Good performance from the team, Walcott good but can be just as effective from the wings, being a striker is just an ego trip for him. He should sign and lets be done with it

dont understand this, so what if its an ego thing, if he bangs in the goals and performances he can be the biggest egotistical player in the world for all i care.....i recall a time when Gooners enjoyed the arrogance and ego of Henry.

Because good players are beyond definition. Is Messi a striker.....no he plays in a fluid 3 with 2 other intelligent players. Henry was a striker but never stayed stagnant in the middle. the problem with walcott trying to hog the central position is that he eliminates the effectiveness of the cross from the wings and the ball up the top. If you look at todays goals. Giroud probably cant score walcotts goals and Walcott certainly couldnt score any of Girouds goals.

Incredible second half. Really need to see that again. :haha:

We really stepped up the urgency in the second 45. Everyone was great going forward but great finishing by Walcott - very close to a goal-a-game player now. It's going to be horrible when another one of those leaves. We're starting to see the little partnerships developing and more chances are being created as a result. Podolski and Walcott seem to link up very well. And Wilshere and Cazorla seem to know where to drop off now.

I think defensively Gibbs should've done better on 2 of Newcastle's goals. But can't be arsed nit-picking on that right now.

The quality of football was mostly atrocious, especially the first half. I suppose this is the norm for the PL now though.

Podolski was excellent all game, not just creating for others but being aggressive in pressing and winning the ball back.

With three goals and two assists, it's hard to criticise Walcott's output. Imagine how good he could be if he fine-tuned his touch and passing. When we're playing at a high energy level with direct, incisive passing, Theo is as dangerous as anyone in the League. His understanding with Giroud looks quite special too.

Ramsey's cameo was his best performance since he scored versus Portsmouth a few years ago.

Gibbs was really poor though. Santos-esque.

It's more complex than that. Newcastle had to play a high line to do their high tempo pressing game, Theo completely fucked that up. Granted, we could have done that with theo on the wings. But playing two Pacey players (theo and AOC) was far more effective most of the match - but then again I've never seen Guroud be so lethal in front of goal.

Great attacking performance. still believe theo is a winger, those were winger's goals rather then strikers goals imo. instant impact from giroud and was centimetres away from a hatrick too.

podolski seemed arsed today and it showed, jack after a howler in the wall, made up for it with a superb run for the third goal. thought vermaelen and kos did brilliantly with ba and cisse, jsut gibbs and sagna fucked up. chesney comands his area very well and gets crosses. needs to work on distriubtion though

14 goals and 10 assists in Theo's last 20 games for us.

Which is why we can't afford to lose him. I don't understand some people don't think he deserves to be among our highest earners at the club. Over the last 2 seasons he's been one of our most productive players and we don't have such an abundance of talent that we can be indifferent about him leaving.

Ramsey's cameo was his best performance since he scored versus Portsmouth a few years ago.

Forgot to mention this. Yes, he did well.

Gibbs was really poor though. Santos-esque.

He's awesome going forward though. He quickly covers a ridiculous amount of ground for our attacks. I'm not sure he's ever going to read the game well enough to become a Sagna-class fullback.

I think Gibbs is a top, top, top, quality footballer. Apart from today, he's been consistent. He gives our attacks shape. There's very few good defensive full-backs now and Gibbs is probably just adequate in those terms, but in his position I can't think of many who would be better. As long as he doesn't go sleepwalking like today again, he's a huge plus.

I'm happy for us to gamble on Gibbs too. He will still be making mistakes for a while yet and we've got to just accept that and hope his attacking contribution makes up for it. What will be hugely annoying is if we stick with him and he just doesn't learn (like Clichy). By 26 or so you should've done your learning.

Arsenal won their 4th game in a row with a remarkable 7-3 win over Newcastle at the Emirates this evening.

There was one change from the team which beat Wigan. Per Mertesacker fell ill this morning and was replaced by Laurent Koscielny, other than that it was the same starting XI with Theo Walcott retaining his place as the central striker.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain had Arsenal’s first attempt of the game in the opening minute, dragging a shot wide after an early break from Jack Wilshere. And the Gunners looked busy in the early stages with crosses from Sagna and Cazorla having to be dealt with.

The game then settled down into familiar tedium, Arsenal struggled to find space and did little with it when they did. Newcastle had the best chance when Ba headed over the Ba (hah) from a corner. It was not a sign of things to come.

But in the 20th minute Arsenal went head. Lukas Podolski sent a lovely pass down the inside left channel for Theo Walcott to run onto. He drove forward into the box and in a manner very reminscent of Thierry Henry passed it into the net to the open the scoring. 1-0.

It wasn’t a half of much action, and it was Arsenal who had the next chance in the 37th minute. Again Walcott was set up by Podolski, he rode a challenge into the area but on his left foot couldn’t find a finish with just the keeper to beat and Krul saved easily.

Chiek Tiote then troubled Szczesny with a shot from distance which the Polish keeper bashed away for a corner, and Arsenal should have gone further ahead when they cleared it and Theo Walcott broke. With just one Newcastle defender in front of him, and well into the Newcastle half, he just had to play in Cazorla, but the pass was terrible, behind the Spaniard and Newcastle got it clear.

We were punished for that a couple of moments later when Newcastle were awarded a free kick just outside the box, Demba Ba took it, it deflected off Jack Wilshere’s head (he really should have just headed it away, not his finest moment), and past Wojciech Szczesny. 1-1. And the vistors could have gone in ahead when Ba again got a free header from a corner but put it over the bar.

Arsenal had the first chance of the second half. After a bright move we worked it from right to left, Podolski played in Gibbs, he shot from a tight angle but Krul stood up well and saved.

And in the 50th minute we went ahead. Lukas Podolski won a header from a Newcastle throw, Santi Cazorla played it across goal to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and his low shot back across the keeper nestled into the bottom corner. 2-1.

Theo Walcott wasted another good chance to create something. Having won the ball in midfield he had options, particularly Podolski who was free, but he greedily took it on and rolled a tame shot wide. And just like in the first half, Arsenal were immediately punished when Marveaux tapped in Obertan’s low cross at the back post to make it 2-2.

Although Kieran Gibbs will be blamed, we were outnumbered in the box, Jack Wilshere could see the overlap, looked directly at Marveaux and didn’t do anything to get back to cover.

But a few minutes later, the England man then made up for his howlers with a great run into the box and a chipped cross which came back to Lukas Podolski to head home from close range. 3-2.

The lead lasted just as long as you would expect as Arsenal target Demba Ba stole in at the back post to sidefoot home. Again Arsenal’s defending was poor, this time Gibbs to blame as he allowed the Newcastle man to get ahead of him as Marveaux’s cross came in. 3-3.

Amazingly, Arsenal were ahead just 4 minutes later. More good play saw Gibbs get into the box and although Podolski missed his cut back, it came to Walcott who swiveled and smashed it into the top corner to make it 4-3.

Arsenal brought on Giroud for Oxlade-Chamberlain and Ramsey for Podolski before Theo Walcott had a chance to get his hat-trick but his shot was deflected just inches wide. He then turned provider for Oliver Giroud, firing in a great cross from the right hand side which the Frenchman headed home from close range. 5-3.

It wasn’t over yet though, the Frenchman latched onto a loose ball after a Walcott run, took it outside and smashed it home with his right foot to make it 6-3. And just moments later Walcott got his hat-trick with quick feet in the box, lifting it past Krul to make it 7-3.

“Sign him up, sign him up”, sang the Arsenal fans about Walcott. If only were that simple!

A remarkable game, in all aspects, and three great points. I’m knackered even watching it.

Have a good one, Gooners.

Notice how he effectively levels the blame at Walcott for 2 of the goals because he had missed/misplaced a pass before Newcastle's equalisers :haha:

It's my last word on the subject. He's embarrassed himself today (especially with the incessant Theo bashing on his Liveblog) and I think most people are able to see through his "objective impartial observer" routine.

tbf he is spot on with what he said. theos failure to make a simple pass could have cost us dearly. make that pass and it most liekly would have been 2-0, instead it later became 1-1.

theo did well in second half, but waht arseblog says isnt wrong.

in th14's first season at the club he had the worst successful pass rate in the team. theo won't be another henry but still, it gives you an idea of how players develop their game and perceptions change.

just seen the highlights

selling theo will have more of an impact than selling rvp.

when theo goes we really have no stand out player that can change the game. our next bet will be chamberlain but he's nowhere near the level theo is at.

if theo goes we will become predictable, boring and completely one dimensional. we'll constantly play a slow tempo tippy tappy brand of football. pretty much what we do when giroud starts up front. its completely ineffective. with theo we are lightning.

giroud is a great player coming off the bench.

sagna needs a rest. get cafu in.

podolski looked dench.

on Theo Walcott...
He has done very well and it just typifies what I think he can do. He can play through the middle, I am convinced of that, and he can only get stronger in there. Overall I am pleased with his performance.

on his finishing…
Yes, determination and running into the box, dribbling, short dribbling. I believe he is a good finisher, that he has learned a lot because he is an intelligent player. And because he is intelligent, he will continue to improve.

on his contract talks…
You know, the intensity of my desire [to extend his contract] is exactly the same as it was before the game. My desire is to extend his contract, he belongs here and hopefully we can do it.

on how Saturday's performance affects the situation…
I don't know, I think the commitment for a club is a long-term process. I don't think it should depend on one game. Should he have had a disastrous game today, it would not have altered my determination to extend his contract and to sign him. That does not depend on one game.

on the influence of Thierry Henry…
I believe Theo takes advice from Thierry, of course, because Thierry has played in that position. But Thierry arrived yesterday in training, he didn't practise with us, but it's good when you need to talk to someone who has played in there. [Theo's first goal] was a Thierry-type goal.

on the ongoing negotiations...
I do not want to talk about that [the negotiations], it is enough in the public place. I believe there is no need to talk about it. Yes [I understand why people want to talk about it] because he was man of the match today and he made the decision. But I would like to talk more about his footballing qualities than about money and speculation.

on the fans' response to Theo…
I think he loves the club and the club loves him, and the reciprocity in love is the most difficult to find.

on Olivier Giroud…
Yes, he came on very sharp. He looked dangerous on crosses, he looked mobile, technically sound. He had as well an impact when he came on.

on Newcastle's performance…
I agree with you [that they played their part]. The game was not as comfortable as the result indicates. We suffered for big parts in the game, especially in the first half when I felt we played with the handbrake, we were a bit nervous, not free of the chest. We had problems to win the ball back from them. Every time they came back but we kept going and in the end of course it became easy, but it was a difficult game for us.

on his concern over the goals conceded…
Yes, because we were three times in front and three times they came back, but they are a team that is good going forward. I was impressed today by Ba, he had an excellent game. The midfield as well, I felt that Marveaux had a very good game. Tiote as well, they were strong. They are a strong team.

I felt he should have done better

They all did. Sagna let that ex-utd dick get away too easy, Kos was indecisive when he could have stood up better (though i assume he was worried about putting it in his own net again), vermaelen was woefully out of position, causing gibbs to cover the spare man in the box, and no midfielder dropped in.

The main blame for me is on Sagna and Vermaelen.

It was a bit of a shocker defensively. Already mentioned Sagna and Gibbs being poor. Didnt really notice Vermaelen today at all. Not sure if thats a good thing or a bad thing and of course Kos who should have dealt with the cross when it rolled past his foot

Mert is needed asap

Didn't watch the match (no ESPN) and haven't seen the highlights as I went to see the Hobbit (great film) but from the match thread we seem to play very well in the 2nd half and got an excellent result.

As I've always said pretty sure we'll get 4th place, but we'll need to improve the team to go beyond that, Walcott with more goals he's been pretty good up front this season, not RVP good (the guy got a ridiculous amount of goals last season) but very good nonetheless, but I reckon it's highly likely he'll be snapped up.

Defending was a mess but that was a very good team performance. Our attack looks a lot more clinical and dynamic when playing witha forward 3 rather than 4-5-1. Wenger needs to drop that now.

I thought it was an awful team performance. Defence and midfield were off. Cazorla and Arteta took the night off. Jack was anonymous for large parts because he wasn't getting touches of the ball and while he's putting pressure on the opposition everyone else is standing around and giving Newcastle plenty of space. Arteta needs to hold a bench and we need a new DM pronto because he can't play the anchor role in the middle. He's on his heels too much and when the defence are looking for passing options from the back he's pointing to someone else for the ball to go wide. He never comes looking for the ball and that's part of the reason why we're getting dominated in the middle because we're being forced down narrow channels. There is no cohesion between the three middle players. Maybe Jack needs to play deeper and play the pivot role because Arteta is slowing us down. When marked he never tries to loose his marker he just stays flat footed and points for the ball to be played anywhere as long as it's not played to him. He needs to go.

Jack even if marked will always stay on his heels and look for space and such movement at least creates space for others if you're being tightly marked. Standing in one spot and pointing to where the ball should be played while making no movement yourself is just plain lazy. The middle three have to be more fluid and move more because we have tougher games ahead of us and more lethal teams will punish us if we keep playing like that.

Newcastle dominated possession in the first half which suggested there was a problem with the midfield. We improved in the 2nd, but even then Newcastle had more passes than us after around 70 minutes which is normally unthinkable at the Emirates. If we play like we did in the first half against better teams we'll be punished.

It really wasn't. We were far too casual in the first half and even the commentators said it looked as though Newcastle were the fresher team. Newcastle even had a period where they had 70% of possession.

http://www1.skysports.com/football/live/match/261751/stats

Newcastle held 55% possession, made over 100 more passes than us and their passing accuracy was 89% while ours was 82.5%. We weren't good for long periods and it was nowhere near the sort of performance we saw at Reading where we looked more like the Arsenal of old. Fantastic result and some individual performances. I thought Podolski was excellent for a change but Arteta, Cazorla and Jack need get a hold of the game and control it. It's part of the reason why we leaked so many goals.

Never seen a game where a team scores 7 goals, but look so weak in some many areas. Same problems that's been plaguing this teams was still on show yesterday.

Can't keep the ball, have trouble getting the ball when they lose it, still can't break down a team, when they have time to organize. Can only score from quick attacks or defensive mistakes.

Play like that against Bayern(especially that 1st half performance), they will get beat 7-3

At fault for one goal. The first of the two you alude to, he was trying to cover off the spare man in the more dangerous position.

The midfield didn't track the extra man, vermaelen just left him, and kos tried his best not to score an own goal.

In hindsight, Sagna was beaten far too easily. Gives away the needless free kick for the first and gets owned by Obertan for the second. The third was all Gibbs though - just didn't read the game at all.

A bit late on this, good result...much needed to put the pressure on the Scum. Theo was deadly, as was Giroud. Poldi, Oxo, Cazorla & Jack all had good-ish games. Arteta was OK...still needs proper competition.

Now onto the defence, Sagna was horrible, his worst performance in an Arsenal shirt IMO, Gibbs was horrible too and If I'm honest his current form is really worrying me, the boy is caught out of position far too much and ball watches. Both CB's were OK...though got bullied by BA.

Onto the next, the Saints away, this one won't be easy, they've really improved since we last played them and I think they are going to cause us quite a few problems. Obviously we can really hurt them...but it won't be easy.
