Unless Wenfer decides to surprise us again, this is still overall a negligent and quite simply amateurish transfer window. Seems he will remain WUMger.

Ozil is brilliant. But he's definitely a "we've done fuck all so here's one massive coup of a signing that will hopefully more than momentarily make you forget we have a flimsy transfer strategy."

A striker with excellent pedigree and another efficient attacking player was needed. Ozil covers one of those. Considering the current state of the squad, and the ever-flimsy nature of our players, solid back-ups at the back and in midfield were required. Flamini isn't in theory a bad option for one of those requirements.

So two positions fulfilled. But there's the nagging feeling that the positions unfulfilled are where we will suffer over a long season as usual and the fact that the club didn't have the inclination or maybe more worryingly, the ability to negotiate deals successfully with all this supposed money is quite ridiculous.

Now, I wasn't voted second most optimistic poster of the year in 2006/2007 after Cripps on GW for no reason, so I'll go back to my usual Ned Flanders-esque self after this post. But as ever with Arsenal, it feels so nearly near yet so frustratingly far.

Anyway, come on Sanogo, And come on Viviano. And come on Ozil. And come on tennis.

Sheer bizarreness connected with Manchester United’s collapsed move for Ander Herrera. However, it now seems the trio were imposters and had nothing to do with United at all.”

8 years going backwards but finally we've reversed direction. That might be the most we can really hope for in what has to be stage #1 of a plan to rebuild the team. You have to hope so anyway. Arsenal smashed their record transfer by signing Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid for £42.4m on a dramatic transfer deadline day as summer spending in the Premier League also reached a new high.
Marouane Fellaini's last-gasp move from Everton to Manchester United for £27.5m meant that the total topped £600m.
United boss David Moyes also hopes to capture Real's Fabio Coentrao on loan.
Everton boss Roberto Martinez signed Gareth Barry, Romelu Lukaku and James McCarthy as the deadline concluded.
Wigan midfielder McCarthy, 22, moved to Goodison for £13m, with Chelsea forward Lukaku and Manchester City midfielder Barry joining on season-long loans.
The five completed deals were all concluded in a dramatic final half-hour of the transfer window before it closed at 23:00 BST, with the gross spending easily succeeding the previous high of £500m.
Manchester United failed to land a last-day deal for Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera and it looked like it might be an unsuccessful final day for Moyes, with Uruguayan right-back Guillermo Varela the United boss's solitary signing since he replaced Sir Alex Ferguson in the summer.
And adding to the plot twists, it was not until after the deadline had passed that news emerged of midfielder Fellaini joining his former Everton manager at Old Trafford.
It is understood that Manchester United were also working on a deal to bring Everton left-back Leighton Baines to the Premier League champions but it fell through, leaving the Old Trafford club to work on a season-long loan for Portuguese left-sided defender Coentrao, 25.
Liverpool avoided the last-minute rush by earlier recruiting defenders Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori for £25m while Nigerian forward Victor Moses has joined the Reds from Chelsea on loan.
Italian striker Fabio Borini left Anfield to join Sunderland on loan with former Liverpool defender Andrea Dossena, 31, also moving to the Stadium of Light from Napoli on a one-year deal.
Black Cats forward Stephane Sessegnon has moved to West Brom to join forwards Victor Anichebe, another late capture from Everton for a fee rising to £6m, and Shane Long, who almost joined Hull.
The recruitment of German international attacker Ozil on a five-year deal will appease Arsenal fans who have been waiting patiently for a big-name signing.
Ozil, who is classed as one of Europe's best players, said: "I am thrilled to be joining a club of the stature of Arsenal and am looking forward to playing in the Premier League.
"It will be great for my own personal development as a player and I am particularly looking forward to working with Arsene Wenger."
Elsewhere, Aston Villa have agreed a deal for Czech Republic striker Libor Kozak from Lazio for about £7m. Newly promoted Crystal Palace signed Barry Bannan from Aston Villa and defender Adrian Mariappa from Reading for an undisclosed fee.
Fellow Premier League newcomers Cardiff City signed striker Peter Odemwingie from West Brom on a two-year deal for £2.25m.
Queens Park Rangers boss Harry Redknapp managed to secure the loan deals of Dynamo Kiev midfielder Niko Kranjcar, Tottenham left-back Benoit Assou-Ekotto and midfielder Tom Carroll.
Gareth Bale's world-record move from Tottenham to Real for £85.3m was more than double Ozil's fee but Spurs are the biggest spenders this window having taken on seven players for just under £105m.

I'm still not thrilled with this window - but what a signing!

That said - if there was a transfer strategy and this was our target all along, it was pretty much impossible for it to be done earlier than the end of the window. Had Ozil been dealt earlier, RM would probably have had to part with more for Bale.

I hope we are in with a shout in January and make further moves in the market. A good start and this statement of intent could make us an attractive proposition for top players.

I think we needed cover up front and also at the back.

With Podolski out an injury to Giroud would leave us very limited and we really need Vermaelen back in the squad soon.

Not 100% satisfied but absolutely delighted with Ozil because it represents a shift for us. Statement of intent and hopefully shows other top players that Arsenal is a club for them.

This.

The Ozil signing has masked what would have been an absolute "car crash" of a window, but it is a superb signing none the less, bonafide world class player.

Still think we need a CB to compete with the 3 Senior ones we currently have and a Striker is also a major priority.

Assuming we can get through the season with Giroud, Poldi & Theo taking up the reigns, a World Class Striker should be the priority next summer.

I personally think the Ozil signing will open the floodgates in terms of attracting the best.

So much for having the ear of every top manager.

Although they blew most of their budget in January to avoid relegation.

But yeah you're right, that is weird. It must be because of a non-footballing reason. He's a better player than Rose at both ends of the pitch.

I'm guessing it is because the Spuds had already got rid of so many homegrown players.

Should've kept Bale and played him at left back tbh

I'm quite happy overall with our transfer window dealings this season. While some may have thought we have more pressing concerns, scoring goals has never really been our problem. Quite Higuain probably would have improved us, I'm happy we decided to believe in Giroud eventually - I think he's capable of being a lot, lot better than most predict and is capable of getting 25-30 goals a season. We do have Walcott that we can play centrally before we have to rely on the likes of Sanogo and Bendtner.

Signing a pure defensive midfielder would have been a plus but none really moved that would benefit us too heavily and when everyone is fit our midfield is quite strong - Cazorla, Wilshere, Ramsey, Rosicky, Flamini, Ozil, Arteta all competing for 3 slots can only be good for us. The likes of Ramsey and Rosicky should be versatile enough to play there without too much strain when Flamini or Arteta aren't fit. Last thing we needed was a backup CB but guess we'll have to hope Mert and Kos stay fit forever.

Man Utd didn't get Coentrao.

They had a very poor window, comical TBH. The Thiago saga, then bidding for Fabregas when he made it clear he didn't want to go there, the Herrera saga and the Imposters

Then overpaying for Fellaini.

Brilliant.

We have no cover for Giroud, no quality back up for Ches.

Have to hope both stay fit and on form. First team wise, we should be ok. Squad wise we are short. Our kids are shit these days so can't rely on them.

Ozil of course is a brilliant signing and hopefully he performs straight away

I think Ozil is a fantastic signing, real top quality player who will inject pace and genuinely improve the team.

Probably not the position we most needed to strengthen however if a player of this quality comes up it's hard to refuse to opportunity to sign him as he's better than what we have by a long way.

Agree with Cripps though, could have used 1 or 2 more to give us a bit more depth, up front we're definitely short and it would have been good to have some options, a quality CB too would have been handy.

This.

Ozil is an awesome signing, no one can deny that.

The problem is we have come up short in other areas, 3 months and we've only signed 1 top top player. It's not good enough when squad wise, we are too short.

Ba on loan would've been good, but signing a half decent striker, like benteke, or really pushing for Rooney would've been better and given us more strength in depth.

As it is, we're looking like we'll end up playing bendtner, zelalem and akpom, ffs.

Ozil lessens the need for a top striker as I'm sure he'll create more than enough for Giroud and others, however I do think cover was needed because we seriously can't expect Sanogo to step up so soon and Bentnder, well, fuck knows why he's still here but whatever. Theo can of course be moved central but then that leaves a space on the right where the options become limited again.

Vermaelen should be back after the break. He was a bit shit last season but hope that's over and done with.

Can't believe we are relying n Bendtner should Giroud not be available. He can't play every game so expect to see Bendtner in our cup games

Obviously we have to enjoy a massive signing like this. It's what we've needed for years now, and really changes the whole outlook. We've shown that we are ready to go for worldies, and it shows the ambition we have been wanting the club to show in the transfer market.

I'm not overly concerned about defence, or midfield, as I think we have enough there to cover us, unless we're really unlucky with injuries again. We have 3 first choice CB's with a very good stand in (Sagna). We have 2 right backs, 2 left backs and Flamini as cover. Can we call back Miquel if all goes tits up? I think getting another quality CB is pushing it too far, as no big name would come in to sit on the bench. We'll see.

Midfield is stocked full of talent now. And the good thing, is that they can all interchange. We may lack a little width, with Theo being the only real outlet....but I think he wants to bring on Gnabry and Myachi....who lets face it, will need games to prove whether they have what it takes.

My one bug bear, is in the Striker department. I wish we could have added something there, because whilst Giroud is better than some think, we are relying on an unproven back up in Sanogo. We just have to hope there is something else in the locker there that we haven't seen yet....Akpom?

Bendtner can fuck off.

Losing Podolski for 3 months is a big problem. But we should move things around now. Walcott should be given a chance as the central striker now that we have a great player for starting counter attacks. Giroud back-up.

Also a CB was a must too. I could live without a keeper if we'd have gotten a decent CB in.

What really gets me however, is there were some AST members saying on twitter that discussions over a new contract for wenger would take place at the next meeting.

Sorry, but buying 1 WC player isnt enough for him to redeem himself. He's still got the January window and the rest of the season to go before any sort of talks should take place.

Think Theo and Podolski when he's fit will be our go to options if Giroud isn't available.

It will mean Ozil and/or Cazorla on the wing though. Ryo has been shit on loan at every club and Gnabry looks average

I really don't understand why we didn't get a striker in???

We still had money and there were still some options for the right price
