He's nowhere to go, we wouldn't take a hit on him and I can't see any club prepared to pay 11 million or whatever crazy fee we paid for him.

Like P'n'G said he's not actually terrible, just lacks confidence etc.

Personally I'd take a hit on him, we don't have time to develop players confidence via game time, especially players who are no longer young or development projects.

Not as good as he was when at Inter. Still far better than any of our clowns. If he regains his Inter form, we'll have a keeper that rivals Casillas, Buffon and De Gea as the best keepers in the world

Would have preferred to use our summer signing on a bigger name, a striker. But you can never have too many GKs. We have about nine now don't we? Did anyone ever hear anything about that (was it Russian) guy we signed last year? Or was it the year before? And Podolski can play in goal too.

Fantastic news. This is the player we have always needed.

ARSENAL are keeping tabs on Lyon star Clement Grenier.
The former France youth international, 22, has impressed Gunners boss Arsene Wenger this season.
He scored four goals in the last seven matches of the Ligue 1 campaign and has drawn comparisons to Lyon legend Juninho Pernambucano.
And Wenger said: “We are following Grenier. His intelligent play pleases me.
“He has interesting qualities and reminds me of Samir Nasri.”

Lyon midfielder Clement Grenier has dropped a broad hint that he could be on his way to Arsenal this summer.
The classy France international emerged as a target for Arsenal when Gunners chief Arsene Wenger confirmed his admiration for the player.
Earlier in the week, Grenier confirmed he had held talks about his future with Lyon boss Remi Garde, but claimed he was focused on the national side.
However, he has now confirmed his mind has pretty much been made up - with Arsenal certainly in the frame to secure his signature.
"I have more or less made a decision about which club I want to join," Grenier said. "I have made the choice for sporting reasons above all. Arsenal? It could well be them.
"There would be competition for places, but you get that at all big clubs and it does not stop me making my decision.
"I am still young, but I have always set myself targets and I do everything possible to exceed them."

Did the usual Youtube research and I can see why he reminds Wenger of Nasri. Looks like a Wenger type signing and he has talent. You can't wait around too long for these type of players to make a huge impact because the price just goes up if they start to really blossom. Ribery, Hazard, Benzema and Essien are examples of that.

Wenger usually gets it right with these sort of players. It's the unknown French league players that are in their mid 20s or older we should worry about. Gervinho, Chamakh, Giroud, Kosienly...the older rough around the edges players that can either blossom quickly or just tank.

Edit: My main concern is where is this kid going to play? If Wenger tries to play him on the flanks then I think it's a mistake. He doesn't look like and out and out power dribbler. He's getting compared to Juninho a lot. The kid can hit a freekick from the looks of things.

I think we will shatter our transfer record this summer. We'll get in one big signing but don't know who. I would like us to get at least first team players at RB, defensive mid and a top forward. After Christmas, he was killing it on the left. For 7-8 games around the Newcastle game when Theo was scoring a lot. He can play on the left for us. If we get a clever striker like jovetic in, he should create chances for theo and Podolski.

I wouldn't even put Gervinho or Giroud on the 'must get rid' list. They should be squad players and the same can be said for Podolski.

I suppose it's a good sign that Wenger hasn't taken so long to bench and replace players that aren't producing. He was ruthless with Chamakh and spared no time benching Gervinho and Podolski.

Master Splinter
02-06-2013, 06:24 PM
He was only ruthless with Chamakh because of RVC's return.

And it did look like Podolski was carrying an injury, so I'm not sure if he was dropped. And then we went on a good run, so the team stayed the same mostly.

Podolski is a good player to have around because he guarantees goals. Are we a club that can afford to have a high earner like him sitting on the bench though? That's why I could see him being sold if we buy any new attacking players. Seeing as Sanogo will be our premier purchase, however, he will most likely stay and continue to look rigid and only occasionally useful in our system.

But Podolski was playing well scoring a few goals and chalking up a fair amount of assists prior to being benched, so a bit harsh to say he wasn't producing. I remember lots of fans asking why Wenger was freezing him out after his good run of form. The answer posted here was that he was carrying an injury.

I still believe he's a lazy fucker who is capable of giving a higher output, but it seems he was another one Wenger was ready to kill off for whatever reason. Luckily for him, the French statue got suspended.

I'm still not convinced he can play there. He hardly attempts to beat his marker when one on one and needs someone else to create the space for him with a good pass. He works better with an attacking fullback like Gibbs. It's like we need two players to do the job of one. It usually takes a combination of passes to advance down the left side and it's as if he needs service just to get beyond fullbacks instead of creating it for himself which is what a typical winger will do.

It's a tricky one because he's putting up the numbers, can deliver the good pass and finish when needed, unlike Gervinho but we miss that marauding threat down our flanks. The complete attacking winger. We're getting half and half on each side of attack because it's the same with Theo on the right. But Theo at least tries to beat his opponent on the wings and sometimes pulls it off. I don't know how Wenger will balance it all up. He's also got Cazorla playing there too so who knows what's on the cards.

Shifting those players over to the bench shouldn't effect our search for top quality players. It's a case of pushing players like Giroud and Podolski down the pecking order and getting better players in to start. I didn't say anything about continuing to buy shit players. It's unrealistic to expect us to sell all those players and replace them in one window. We still need a strong bench that has some Arsenal and Prem experience. I can't see why Cesc would go to Man Utd tbh. He left Arsenal to go home which also coincided with joining the best team in the world and winning a bunch of trophies. So surely if he comes back to England he'll join Arsenal as he's got unfinished business??!!

Leaving Barca for any English club is a massive step down so he may as well come to us.

That just demonstrates that we're seen by many as sitting on the second rung of the premier league. That said, it isn't written in stone that we have to stay there. Man Utd dominated largely through SAF and having strong revenue. One of those is gone - will they continue to dominate? We're 2-3 top players away from being in the mix and being at the top level.

Of course we are seen as 2nd tier, we bend over backwards when our superiors in the league come calling for our best players.

Well yes. Money in is no good if you don't spend it. However, we have more or less broken even the last 9 years. How? Selling our current players. Much talk of war chest (again) but £15m - £20m may help to loosen the purse strings a little and ensure we don't sell any squad players to do it.

Also, if Man Utd wish to strengthen their midfield do you suppose they have but a single option - Fabregas? No, if they want, they'll buy someone regardless. And if they buy someone regardless we get nothing and our rivals are still strengthened the same amount.

Anyway, you asked for one good reason and you got one. Personally I'd prefer we got him instead and still spent another £50- £60m on transfer fees.

Denilson, Bendtner, Arshavin, Squillacci, Djourou, Mannone, Santos and possibly Sanga (if he chooses) and not sure if Diaby might just retire??
Can't see many being promoted from the reserves yet and we should have funds to get players like...
Begovic, Benteke, Jovetic, would be excellent additions to the first team along with a proven CB (to compliment Kos or Verms, if Merts gets injured), A hard tackling and pacy RB (if Sagna departs) and a classic powerhouse defensive midfielder, Fernando of Porto?

Or number 3 if Fabianski stays - think Szcez still has his kicking and distribution to work on, something which Fabianski seems to improved on since his little cameo role at the end of the season...
Szcez is still young and has a big mouth - if he becomes number 3 - then we could loan him to another prem or championship team - I'm not sure Fabianski is that happy at Arsenal - so we will see. No doubt they both need proper competition though.

Best we can hope for are some youngens with potential that we can flog to City if they turn out to be any good. We'll probably sign a couple of average journeymen too for their experience.

Wonder if there is something there and if so, who it would be? My guess would be a jovetic or HIGUAIN

Hope it is Higuain and not Jovetic

i think it's much better to maintain the current cycle of mediocrity whilst everyone around us does what they can to improve or change. that's the way you continue to move a club forward. as long as we finish fourth, go out in the last 16 of the cl, fail to do anything in the domestic cups, what's to change? let's give wenger one more, just one more - not, you know, one more, but just one more season to turn it around and he'll be like a new signing.

That's the thing, quite a lot of posters have been saying "one more year" for about 3 years now. And in that 3 years we've been regressing on the whole.

Wenger is maddening but you can't argue with his record of finishing top 4 every single year while spending so little in the transfer market.

I'm not saying we should be content with that of course, but he's not the bumbling idiot some on here make him out to be.

Er take the fifth on this one. Real Betis are relentlessly attacking so not sure evaluating a defensive midfielder for them has much value. As a team they've had a very good season but Campbell was the architect behind that.

Also, the constant links to all players going to Juventus is annoying me. Are we really supposed to believing they are taking Llorente, Higuain and Jovetic?

Moyes has been playing him as a second striker or human torpedo for the most part though.

A disgusting scrote elbowing the opposition at every opportunity is quite appealing though tbf. His chest could be our most prolific assister as well.

Dno if how Fellainis person is outside the football field, but if he's as crazy and violent as he is on the pitch, he would probably not fit into our team, i like how our team is filled with fun/happy players with good friendsships outside the pitch and i dont really want people who might stir some shit up - But dammit he would be a BOSS for us on the field, he is exactly what we need in the center midfield.

Also, the fellaini 'story' is on Sky Sports website, but I found this funny:

"But it was somewhat of a surprise to see such significant stakes on them to sign Fellaini.

"The towering midfielder does not seem to fit in with their footballing ethos but our punters certainly seem convinced a deal could happen."
